I believe the good luck celebs in that episode was Al & Peggy Bundy themselves, Ed O'Neill and Katey Sagal! BTW, the contestant chose to play for a Buick Century that day.
@GS47363 You were half right... it was Ed O'Neill, but it was also Brett Butler. If you look very closely at :17 at the lower-right corner, you'll see that only Ed's name appears in the square. This must've been either the Thursday or Friday episode after Katey Sagal left.
Love Shadow Stevens. Can't stand Jimmy Bullock. Annoying character, he still played from "Too Close for Comfort". When Ted Knight called him an idiot, it fit him.
It would be nice to see but I doubt it will ever happen...I think the ownership of the episodes is tied up somewhere. I'd be happy if GSN just starting showing episodes of, for example, wheel of fortune that aren't from the same season over and over again.
I'm begging you guys at GSN to bring back the John Davidson era of Hollywood Squares, because i want to hear Shadoe Stevens yell "JOOOOOOHN DAVIDSON!" Again.
I had sent them a letter asking to that to this and other 70s and 80s Game Shows like 5 years ago Only I asked them to add a Classic Game Show Network
I got a letter back from them but yet they haven't even done it.
We probably won't get to see unless they do a Classic 70s and 80s Game Show Marathon.
This show was like a party, every day---much like the old Match Game, you could tell the celebs were having a blast, especially when they took the show on the road.
I particularly liked this version of HS, but my fondest memory of this version, above all else, was hearing Shadoe Stevens bellow, "JOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHN Davidson!" at the start of every episode.
But Eubanks was replaced by Bill Rafferty on "Card Sharks" for awhile before CS was cancelled in 1987...and then "revived" in 2001, with Pat Bullard, a rather lam-o version to say the least....it faded into oblivion quickly.
Actually, Eubanks did the entire daytime version of the CBS Card Sharks from 1986-89, and Bill Rafferty did the entire syndicated version from 1986-87.
Yeah, I'm not perfect in my game-show knowledge (but somewhat decent lol), but I do recall seeing parts of the Eubanks version in 1986, while visiting some friends in an area where that version was carried. I don't think my lousy CBS station even bothered to carry the Eubanks run, but the Rafferty version was carried (on a different station), so maybe I thought that Eubanks was quickly replaced by Rafferty...oh well, no use beating a dead horse. I actually enjoyed Jim Perry's version best.
If I ever Decide to have a "Hollywood Squares" Party, I want to build an Exact Replica of the Host and Contestant Area, and it can be from any version of the show, either Peter Marshall, John Davidson, or Tom Bergeron. Of course, as the host, I'll be between both Contestants, and i can get two of my Friends to play as X and O.
I agree with you. They should put this version of "Hollywood Squares" on GSN. I used to watch Hollywood Squares on USA, and I even played the Hollywood Squares Nintendo Game. My Favorite thing about Hollywood Squares is that the Host is right between both Contestants. So Far, GSN has aired the Original Squares with Peter Marshall, and the recent Revival with Tom Bergeron. I really ought to see John Davidson's Version of the Squares, along with his version of "The $100,000 Pyramid".
Be careful what you wish for! I understand the John Davidson version of "Pyramid" sucked. You may like it, but not too many others seemed to, from what I've scooped...lol
GSN should also bring back the classic Peter Marshall version, as well as bringing back a lot of the GREAT game-show classics they used to show. Too bad they've since opted to "rebrand" the network, to show a lot of tripe such as that poker shit, and other inane rubbish. Bill Cullen would be rolling over in his grave, seeing what happened to GSN. I know he died before the channel signed on, but just letting you now how much GSN sucks now.
Saying GSN sucks is mild, at best. I despise the only way I ever see the black and white "goodies" is when I'm sick and can't get to sleep in the middle of the night. Yeah, all the poker sucks big time, too. There are so many shows that could show that would be family friendly and entertaining. Hey, at least they still play Match Game.
Yeah, I surely wish GSN would revert back to its old roots of being a true game-show lovers' network, but alas that's hardly so anymore. I dislike how they yanked "Tic Tac Dough" not too long ago, but at least I got to see much of champ Thom McKee's run. And they still show Let's Make a Deal last I checked, but I'd like it if they brought back Double Dare and Ludden's Password, as well as Beat the Clock and a few other gems. Match Game isn't so bad but can get rather redundant.
Look at the way Shadoe Stevens was back then. He likely doesn't have as much hair as he used to. These days you can hear him doing the intro on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson".
Wow - can't believe she stayed with the network that long. You don't see that happen too often these days! Just looked her up and she still looks good 20 years later!
Wow - who knew back in 1987/88 when I taped these that they'd end up viewable on the internet! Obviously I traded them to someone who digitized and posted them. They're still in real good shape. Not sure how my VHS tapes are doing 20 years later...
The closing credits seen here are from the week of November 30 to December 4 1987 (unless I'm mistaken, this was the week where Shadoe Stevens gets arrested and is replaced by Richard Stevens). The opening credits seen here are from (I think) the week of October 24 to October 28 1988.
BTW, can you please post some full episodes of Davidson's Squares?
