  • RIP Steve Landesberg

  • I have always gotten the guy in the thick black framed glasses confused with George Michael LOL, SMH.

  • @TheNostalgiaJunkie What's his name? Jim J Bullock?

  • I claim that this is one of the best game show themes of all time!

  • I believe the good luck celebs in that episode was Al & Peggy Bundy themselves, Ed O'Neill and Katey Sagal! BTW, the contestant chose to play for a Buick Century that day.

  • @GS47363 You were half right... it was Ed O'Neill, but it was also Brett Butler. If you look very closely at :17 at the lower-right corner, you'll see that only Ed's name appears in the square. This must've been either the Thursday or Friday episode after Katey Sagal left.

  • Love Shadow Stevens. Can't stand Jimmy Bullock. Annoying character, he still played from "Too Close for Comfort". When Ted Knight called him an idiot, it fit him.

  • Steve Landsburg( the guy in the top left corner square) played on Barney Miller

  • Here's an idea,

Why dont they just create a classic Game Show Network ?

  • 0:10-0:20 is my favorite part of the theme.

  • @66hourenergy Mine too!

  • Not only do i want to see the John Davidson era of Hollywood Squares, but also his era of The $100,000 Pyramid in 1991.

  • It would be nice to see but I doubt it will ever happen...I think the ownership of the episodes is tied up somewhere. I'd be happy if GSN just starting showing episodes of, for example, wheel of fortune that aren't from the same season over and over again.

  • I'm begging you guys at GSN to bring back the John Davidson era of Hollywood Squares, because i want to hear Shadoe Stevens yell "JOOOOOOHN DAVIDSON!" Again.

  • Shadoe Stevens' voice sounds like Johnny Jacobs'.

  • Jim J was the center square?? Usually Joan Rivers was the center square

  • AH! My old home station! And yeah, the anchorette in the clip is still there!

  • LOL@ anchorette

  • Bet that guy was happy knowing the dodgers did win in '88.

  • I miss all those game shows from the 80's I use to watch on the USA Network.

  • Me too, we need to get GSN to airs this 86 version, we saw 70s & 98 but no 86 version of Hollywood Squares.

  • I had sent them a letter asking to that to this and other 70s and 80s Game Shows like 5 years ago Only I asked them to add a Classic Game Show Network

I got a letter back from them but yet they haven't even done it.

We probably won't get to see unless they do a Classic 70s and 80s Game Show Marathon.

  • This show was like a party, every day---much like the old Match Game, you could tell the celebs were having a blast, especially when they took the show on the road.

  • They sure were in "desperation scrounge mode" when they assembled this group of *ahem* celebrities.

  • i think this show had one of the best themes of all time

  • I particularly liked this version of HS, but my fondest memory of this version, above all else, was hearing Shadoe Stevens bellow, "JOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHN Davidson!" at the start of every episode.

  • John Davidson & Joan Rivers were simi raginers on Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall

  • Bob Eubanks was doing Newlywed Game and card sharks, right?

  • Yes indeed

  • But Eubanks was replaced by Bill Rafferty on "Card Sharks" for awhile before CS was cancelled in 1987...and then "revived" in 2001, with Pat Bullard, a rather lam-o version to say the least....it faded into oblivion quickly.

  • Actually, Eubanks did the entire daytime version of the CBS Card Sharks from 1986-89, and Bill Rafferty did the entire syndicated version from 1986-87.

  • Rafferty, did the eveing show Eubanks did the day time version. So you got confused. Yes, the 2001 version sucked cause no one really seen it.

  • Yeah, I'm not perfect in my game-show knowledge (but somewhat decent lol), but I do recall seeing parts of the Eubanks version in 1986, while visiting some friends in an area where that version was carried. I don't think my lousy CBS station even bothered to carry the Eubanks run, but the Rafferty version was carried (on a different station), so maybe I thought that Eubanks was quickly replaced by Rafferty...oh well, no use beating a dead horse. I actually enjoyed Jim Perry's version best.

  • If I ever Decide to have a "Hollywood Squares" Party, I want to build an Exact Replica of the Host and Contestant Area, and it can be from any version of the show, either Peter Marshall, John Davidson, or Tom Bergeron. Of course, as the host, I'll be between both Contestants, and i can get two of my Friends to play as X and O.

  • I agree with you. They should put this version of "Hollywood Squares" on GSN. I used to watch Hollywood Squares on USA, and I even played the Hollywood Squares Nintendo Game. My Favorite thing about Hollywood Squares is that the Host is right between both Contestants. So Far, GSN has aired the Original Squares with Peter Marshall, and the recent Revival with Tom Bergeron. I really ought to see John Davidson's Version of the Squares, along with his version of "The $100,000 Pyramid".

  • Be careful what you wish for! I understand the John Davidson version of "Pyramid" sucked. You may like it, but not too many others seemed to, from what I've scooped...lol

  • John is on today's GSN LIVE (10/3/08)

  • Wow, John Davidson gets his clothes at Sears? I would've thought at least Botany 500 or Bernini. What a humble, down-to-earth guy.

  • good point there many of the hosts in the 80's wore Botany 500

  • This version should be on GSN.

  • GSN should also bring back the classic Peter Marshall version, as well as bringing back a lot of the GREAT game-show classics they used to show. Too bad they've since opted to "rebrand" the network, to show a lot of tripe such as that poker shit, and other inane rubbish. Bill Cullen would be rolling over in his grave, seeing what happened to GSN. I know he died before the channel signed on, but just letting you now how much GSN sucks now.

  • Saying GSN sucks is mild, at best. I despise the only way I ever see the black and white "goodies" is when I'm sick and can't get to sleep in the middle of the night. Yeah, all the poker sucks big time, too. There are so many shows that could show that would be family friendly and entertaining. Hey, at least they still play Match Game.

  • Yeah, I surely wish GSN would revert back to its old roots of being a true game-show lovers' network, but alas that's hardly so anymore. I dislike how they yanked "Tic Tac Dough" not too long ago, but at least I got to see much of champ Thom McKee's run. And they still show Let's Make a Deal last I checked, but I'd like it if they brought back Double Dare and Ludden's Password, as well as Beat the Clock and a few other gems. Match Game isn't so bad but can get rather redundant.

  • I couldn't find the info in the supershow 8000 for Tour guide week in Oct '88 Check it and be sure.

  • Although that week of shows is not listed on that site, I'm fairly certain it's from the week of October 24, 1988.

  • one of the best musical scores in game show history.

  • I loved this theme song! :)

  • Look at the way Shadoe Stevens was back then. He likely doesn't have as much hair as he used to. These days you can hear him doing the intro on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson".

  • There's a clip of him doing the intro to Game Show Week II on the 04 Squares. He does look really different.

  • Wow - can't believe she stayed with the network that long. You don't see that happen too often these days! Just looked her up and she still looks good 20 years later!

  • This is incredibly dated!!!!

  • Well, it is 1987 - so of course it's dated

  • This is 1988 or 89, since it was recorded in Universal Studios Hollywood.

  • The closing credits you see were from the week of November 30, 1987. The opening credits were from the fall of 1988.

  • That's it.

  • listen idk if u would b able 2 honor this request but could u put the full theme up

  • Wow - who knew back in 1987/88 when I taped these that they'd end up viewable on the internet! Obviously I traded them to someone who digitized and posted them. They're still in real good shape. Not sure how my VHS tapes are doing 20 years later...

Notice the quick KXAS-TV Dallas news bumper!?

  • One is from 1987, the other is from 1988.

  • Call me crazy.

Look up a song called "Dilemma" by Nelly. Listen to the singing part & you'll hear a bit of Hollywood Squares theme in that song.

Stormy Sachs should've filed a lawsuit.

  • I hear it too

  • Same here! That's bad ass...

  • I heard it too. It does sample the "Hollywood Squares" theme.

  • you're right, nice find!

  • this version's theme right?

  • you're right,

  • how come you don't hear this kind of music anymore?

  • were the tour guides playing for charity? or were they playing for themselves?

  • I'm not 100% sure about that.

  • they need to air this hollywood squares on gsn

  • Yeah. I don't know why they haven't.

  • the closing was from week November 30, 1987 - December 4, 1987

  • how about that music?

  • One of the best to be used on a TV show. :) Love those saxes!

  • the best closing theme

  • this music rocks period

  • Can I see the close to the late 1988 shows?

  • Um... My answer is... blank.

  • What I meant was the close to the other show, the one whose open was shown in this clip.

  • OMG, Youre from Dallas? :D NICE!!

  • The closing credits seen here are from the week of November 30 to December 4 1987 (unless I'm mistaken, this was the week where Shadoe Stevens gets arrested and is replaced by Richard Stevens). The opening credits seen here are from (I think) the week of October 24 to October 28 1988.

BTW, can you please post some full episodes of Davidson's Squares?

  • What was shadoe stevens arrested for?

  • Not sure. I only saw that from part 1 of one of the Davidson HS montages posted here.
