The message stands today, particularly when our Republican candidates for 2012 are talking about bombing Iran. The b"big guys" won't go, just send all of those who join the military, many of whom are doing it, not out of some ideal of patriotism, they just can't find a job. When will we ever learn.
If I remember correctly Congress 'condemned and called this song unpatriotic' and actually passed some sort of 'resolution'.. . We need to send every member of Congress a copy of it now! It's just a great song about a sad and unforgiving war. The way I look at it Freda was right!
wont hear it on the radio cause just like they did 40 yrs ago its not allowed cause it is anti war. i have send it to all the radio stations here in the Midwest and have yet to hear it play nor spoken about... EMR
Wow! I almost forgot about this song! It came out when I was a little boy when the Vietnam War was going on. My older brother or sister bought this record on a 45 RPM. Remember them? Anyway, I still think about this song on occasion even though it was so long ago. Great and nostalgic memories! Thanks for uploading it here!
This was one of my fav songs growing up. I think it is the best song Freda ever made. It has a great beat and vocals and the message is phenomenal. When they stopped playing it on the radio, we all were shocked. Anti-war song were not a big hit with the powers that be back them and today still no one will touch this song with a 10 ft. pole.
@MrBishop1954...Yes What you said is so very true..I Pray All Our Man & Woman Come home soon and Dear Lord Let this War soon be over. Let theses man and woman return home to they family,s and love ones, and for the ones that die fighting for us make they R.I.P AND THANK YOU, AND GOD BLESS THEY FAMILY'S, AND LOVE ONES AS WELL.
Bring my son home from Afganistan! Now! Two of my uncles came home from Vietnam. My father came home from the Korean and WWII. Now I need my son to come home!
I listened to this record many times in Vietnam. I was so disappointed when she would not sing this song at the former Playboy club in Los Angeles while we were there for dinner and drinks. I suppose she did not know what it meant to the guys that were there and would listen to this song.
I promised myself I would not listen to it with the same reverence I did while in Nam.
Vietnam combat veteran (9th Infantry Division). Bring them home alive. Now would be fine. This song is just as relevant in 2011 as it was in 1971. Peace, Love and Hugs to Freda Payne. Are you listening Mr. President?
It's all over - we've got our enemy! Thanx to our sisters and brothers serving our country overseas. Now let's bring them home safe and sound to their families and loved ones
AMAZING SONG FOR OUR MEN, BOYS & LADIES WHO I HOPE RETURN HOME SAFELY!!!! When will it all end? This song proves that it might go out of style but you can always reach bach & use something. I pray for safety for all our troops who are on unsafe grounds.
Soldiers fighting a pointless war; still happening now. Get the boys home - from Afghanistan, from Iran. As this song says: "What are they doing over there, now? When we need them over here, now?"
Always wondered why the airplay was shut down. Who blacklisted her? It was unusal to have black performers make this kind of statement during the Black Power phase. Great song and she was freaking beautiful.
Eugene J Hill killed at Chu Lai 8/23/68 still missed
I can tell you now, and it is truly a shame. I don't hear this song being played now, and I have to ask why? I know the current situation our country finds itself in is ghastly. I'm black, and I know we have a black president, but we all NEED to shout this fucking song from the mountain top. Bring the boys home "President Obama." Please they have sacrifice enough. Mind you, many of the troops who are dying in iraq, afganistan, most are just kids, babies. Who will never have a life.
I listen to this song many a night in vietnam as many of us did while in country, even the white soldiers would listen to this song.
I happened upon Freda Payne at the old playboy club in Los Angeles and requested she sing this song. She declined, even after explaining that many times s we had listen to this song while in country. I and my party of 3 other former Vet Vets got up and walked out of the Playboy Club. I broke the damn record when I got back home.
This song saved my life,I was depressed and wanted to kill my self, after hearing it I joined the Army as a Medic so I could help my brothers in Arms. I spend 20 years of my life taking care of those troops who made it home. 1971-1978,
I was not born until 77 but my mom played this song and she told me it was taken off the air..but I love this song and its relevant to all wars..love those who made the ultimate sacrafice!!!

@DooWopCorner: i was born in 1967 so I only know what I see in docos, read in books and from what I hear from military who served. I hate that so many died for a senseless, useless war that no one could ever give a clear reason why we were there in the 1st place. When Walter Cronkite when on tv & asked LBJ why we were there, that I believe was a turning point. glad u made it home alive
@latinguy67 Want a clear reason why we were in Vietnam google "War is a racket" it is all there in black and white. Like most wars even today Rich man's war, Poor man"s fight.
@DooWopCorner I remember this song being a hit on national radio in the summer of 1971, and even though I was just turning 12, I remember hearing the words loud and clear, as I rode in the back seat of my Fathers 1961 Oldsmobile!
I remember this song. I also recall the U.S. government banned the playing of this song on radios and there were rumors that the government sued Freda Payne over this song. I'm surprised that YouTube allowed it to be posted.

Yep the draft was ended as a result of the Vietnam war too many rich kids getting killed. Not quite as bad as the Civil war though were rich people could pay someone else to take their sons place in the draft.
@harryojvaldeze100 You are so right. Then you'll see how really sincere these pro-war folks really are when they and their families have to go and fight in George Bush's wars.
So sad that we fight wars in other countries to free it{s citizens and we are still not free in our homeland. God help us all! Right on Freda-Bring em home!
I just found out that she was BLACKBALLED due to this song! Which lead to her career never reaching fruition. Freda is VERY BEAUTIFUL! And had a beautiful voice and I always wondered why she never blew up!
She was not "blackballed" soon after she left her record company and their major song writers Hollan-Dozier-Holland for another label. She did have some r&b hits after that.
Don't blame President Obama. He didn't buy the troops a oneway ticket. Hey, if it had been that easy, Bush would have brought them back and so have won another term for the republicans.
Dear President Obama, "I am a 50 year old man, a bit overweight, and average looking. I voted for you, now I want YOU to wave a magic wand and make me look like Brad Pitt in "A River Runs Through It." By the way, I can't wait to vote for you again.
That's funny considering that the mess we're in now had nothing to do with Obama. So don't blame him, blame George Bush, the ignorant moron that ran this country into the dirt. Now Obama's gotta clean up that IDIOTS mistakes and I'm sure that's a hard job for just one man so I COMMEND him for taking on that responsibilty. People think that as soon as Obama got into office everything would magically change. Well it doesn't work like that. These things take time. So I say SHAME ON BUSH NOT OBAMA!!!
You should've been telling that Moron George Bush to bring our troops home because he's the reason that they're over there in the first place. This is HIS war NOT Obama's.
Absolutely! If President Obama could do what the naive person above said, then he could resurrect the dead, cure cancer, and, hopefully, idiocy. If he could end partisan politics, then he could achieve much more.
No, you've got it wrong. Somebody should play this song for George Bush. He's the one who sent the troops over there in the first place, and got us into this mess. Do you make messes for other people, and then shirk responsibility for them? If you do, that doesn't say much for your character. If you don't, then you should know better than to throw a stone at President Obama.
This song was on American top 40 June 1971 ranked #33 106.1 Tulsa station is streaming and plays vintage American top 40 ever sunday morning...Great song and great to hear all the oldies with Kasey Kasem.
Obama bring them back from Iraq and Afghanistan the original plot was not for Osama to be found. If he is alive he have a story that will turn this world upside down
I listened to this song during the 70's when I was very young on a 45 record. This brings back so many memories. Thanks for posting the song......unfortunately, it's so fitting in this day and time.
My father will always play this song when I was growing up. With my love for music I remember learning the words to this song when I was only 9 years, but I never came to the real understanding and significant of this song until now. My father is sleeping in his grave but I am so thanking to me for warning me of these last and evil days we are living in. BRING OUR BOYS AND GIRLS HOME! This song is so powerful!!!
Wait a min who is that in the back ground ,this is truely a nice song

bring the boys home Mr. President, you have the power, you have the votes in Congress....no more excuses....
or are you just afraid that they'll all start looking for jobs once they get here and that'll just make your unemployment number look that much worse
shame on you Mr. President, shame on you
