Actually it would be impossible to actually surf a Tsunami because Tsunami's are usually extremely long, covering the whole coastal line, Tsunami's also go inward, onto land, so this title is incorrect because there is no possible way to surf a Tsunami.

I have personally known Ricky Rasmussen once a World Winning Surfer! They rode these giant Waves in Hawaii and off the Coast of Cuba I believe! They were nearly killed many Times but kept on surfing! On the open ocean waves this size are not exceptional. Off Newfoundland on the Grand Banks the Ocean Ranger was hit by multiple walls of water 95 feet high (30 M) 84 people died when that oil rig capsized.

The ocean gives near infinite fetch and a sea can build . Put a shoal or shallow area in its path and you will have large waves.

The footage being shown here is actually the opening scene and part of the trailer for a big surf movie called "Billabong Odyssey." Mike Parsons nor the tow in guy died from riding this wave.

This is Laird Hamilton surfing Jaws in Hawaii about 12 years ago, the guy filming is in a Helo, and the jetski that tows Laird onto the wave is how he got out there, also Jaws only breaks about 1km out from the beach on these big days, not too hard to get to with a boat/jetski.
