It seems so much more simple just to allow users to select any still from their video. Problem solved. (Multiplication by three different variables....are you kidding?) And no one want's to have to alter their video just to place certain thumbnail images. - With all our technical capabilities, only humans would make it harder on themselves with something like this. We call that a paradox.

If this is not working, it may not be your fault, but youtubes fault. Sometimes youtube changes your videos time length, even by a second will mess this up.

I don't know if I should thank you for this video or not. The good thing is your vid is great - just very informational. The bad thing is half of youtubers are jerks uploading trash and thy will use the knowledge to attract people to their shitty materials using fake thumbnails. BTW, the official YT policy should be that it should ban users who set their thumbnail using image that didn't came from their video but single frames squeezed in.

I HAVE to know how the thumbnail system works. Just a month ago, my video 9:57 long had a lucky thumbnail choice at 2:06. Now I'm afraid I cannot replicate that trick again.

Sorry chaps BUT as of March 2010 thumbnails are randomly chosen by YouTube, I just ran some test to prove it. BUT, I think I may of figured out how to work around this ...... :)

@JacanaProductions so how do all the top youtubers get custom thumbnails? does youtube give you special functions if you generate a lot of traffic? guys like shaycarl have custom images that appear nowhere in their videos.

@TheUndert0ker I just watched another video & this guy said that if u r a youtube partner you get an option to pick a specific pic for ur thumbnail, even upload a pic that is not in ur video. so i guess we "little" people arent very important. lol

I had a 7 min 30 sec. video so I set the image at 3:45 (middle) and it didn't work. I've been reading that this technique doesn't work anymore! which really sucks :' (

Looks like sometime late 2008 YouTube changed how they choose thumbnails--we cracked the code but it is tricky!
