That's not the right "sand". It should be pumice stone dust. Get it from pet stores.

@kellysue425 I'm sorry, but any form of dust, is bad for your hammys. You should make sure that you use "sand" not dust as they will inhale the dust and it can clog their lungs causing breathing problems.

The hamsters use the sand to clean their fur and to use it as a toilet. They like to rub their back in the sand. Don't use normal sand, ask the seller in the petshop what kind of sand is best.
