@RonsteR138 No they are not. You are an idiot. First, who is so ignorant that they can not distinguish between the homophones their, there, and they're? THEIR songs are much more complex. Maynard is intelligent and he uses a form of metaphorical story telling to share his ideas on issues such as creativity vs. the recording industry, introspection vs. self denial, and the narcissism of America. Most people that fail; to see below the thinly veiled metaphors think their songs are about sex.
@bspoff he's actually talking about sex in this one though, through metaphors, but the whole anal sex theme of the song is ITSELF a metaphor. everyone's right about this pretty much, but they're only choosing to see chunks of the big picture.

i love how all tool songs seem to beat a deep wet bloody dark hole inside you then rips a beautiful sensitive thought process out of that very same hole. all that you have built yourself to be tear it down enjoy the ride kick around in the ashes then build it back up again on what you learned from the ride down and what you find down there.
From what I know of Tool and the metaphors that he uses, I think that 4 degrees may refer to the rise in temperature the earth would have to undergo to melt glaciers and flood itself. Most of his songs refer to water (swimming, drowning, or treading) as some metaphor his mind or mental state. 4 degrees calls us to live life according to ourselves. 4 degrees (Celsius or energy state) higher would allow us to release our water (mind) and flood the world.
u just asked my brothers gf an she said that actually the anus is warmer but about o.5-1º not 4º so i dont actually undestand the name of teh song ._.
The sad part is, that's pretty close to right. He's the guy who get's Tool's shit together. Maynard and Danny are just the persona of the bad. D'amore and Chancellor are my favorites, because their bass playing is just too sexy.
This song to me anyway, has to do with us evolving past our current state, after all we only use 10% of our brain capacity, lets go digging and see what we can really do. :)
One interpretation I noticed is the narrator, Maynards singing, could be interpreted as a psychologist. "Take it in" Take in the repressed emotions. "Kill what you want to, take whats left and eat it" Get rid of the unneeded burdens you have, consume whats left, what you want. Just one idea
Tool discussions and meaning debates are actually quite healthy as long as people dont start the personal name calling and shit..Maynard and Tool want this..its about thinking and questioning all aspects of life..And really if the imagery wasnt so intense people would not open their mind..I can meditate to tool and reach a parallel dimension where basically each track may mean something different each time..Tool is spiritual to me..It heals me..It gets me in tune with my emotions..more please!
My mind feels like it's going to explode from trying to understand what you people are trying to explain the meaning/purpose of this song. buttsechs...
Personally, I believe this is another beautiful song about the big H. but then again I could be wrong...but then again I've been lifted 4 Degrees from the blood stream Heroine mix.......just my thought's on it though, not really important.
this song is about Maynard's time spent at west point prep school and how people try to force there own beliefs upon you in this song like being raped
I saw in an interview with maynard that the song is about emotionally opening up, the name comes from the fact that the anal cavity is 4 degrees warmer than the vaginal cavity. but like i said the song is about opening up emotionally, no more no less
Alot of the titles to Tool songs are misleading intentionaly to put of those that do not think for themselves. The vast majority of Tool songs are all about (or have the purpose of) the journey to reach higher levels of consiousness, to transcend the ego and experience some sense of divinity. Duality is an illusion, there is no such thing as "other". Try listening to the songs as if you are singing them to your own ego, go on, just give it a go..... I wish you all trancendance.

to the prison sex comment, Its about Molestation, the name makes perfect sense. Although you are right, Manerd Did say that their music is for the thinker, that they can be perceived in any way.
totally didnt even think of anal sex when i first listened to this song. sad to say after reading all the posts all i can think of now is the fact that this song is totally about putting it in the ass! maybe not necessarily, the song is rather ambiguous
in short i think this song is about love, not sex or butt rape. but the merging of two souls into a single divine being, true love. i like to listen to the songs 4degrees, H., and part of me back to back to back, they have tiny hints of similar meanings, to me at least.
free yourself from yourself. your body is a shell. he talks about discovering youself. free your mind of all beliefs and you will be open to everything rely on your instincs to make choices for you rather than someone or something do what you feel you WANT to do not NEED bring out your shadow all i can say is 46&2 that song has more meaning than anything ive heard or read
call me crazy, i'd say this song is about creativity being suppressed, or someone trying to force another person to think and act the way they do. Its about suppression and rape of the mind not the anus. Any one who's a fan of tool for any sort of time would know Maynard is a pretty intelligent dude, hes not going to write lots off butt rape songs, though hes just the kind of person to package it that way to watch a bunch of tools argue over it.
@Metalhead92787 i don't think any tool song has any 1 meaning, i believe everyone who listens to the song has their own personal interpretation of what the song really means, even if its completely different than the intended meaning.
i want to kick your stupid ass for saying something so stupid this is a good reason why he hates fans like you! you really think this song is about anal rape!
Alright. First off, nobody EVER said anything about anal 'rape'.
Secondly, It's funny that you actually want to impose physical harm because I have a different perspective of a Tool song than you do.
Thirdly, you're not gonna be kicking anyones ass, ok? Keep that in mind at all times.
What you DO need is a fucking sense of humor.
This song clearly has metaphorical value and perspectives. Although, humorously pointing out that this song could be taken as a pro-anal sex song is harmless.
And even if I was serious, which I fucking wasn't, I could easily resort to the old mindset of Maynard himself and say to you "I can say what I want to, even if I'm not serious."
I love this song no matter what kind of things it means, its just a beautiful sounding song and thats what counts...love this song//dont care what it stands for
Is it just me that notices that these two bands sound partially the same?Well,to me they do I don't exactly know much about either band but I LOVE there music.
I was led to believe Maynard, or someone extremely close to him, was raped by someone close to them very young, I 100% speculate he fought with feelings to reciprocate this violation, and Prison Sex along with 4 degrees are his rant of this injustice...where like 10,000 days was fuel for "enlightenment" as Rybot9000 describes...James Maynard Keenan is a poetic god to identify with...if you can
I don't get the downvotes on this comment, are people really taking the lyrics at face value? That's a rather disappointing thought that people would rather take a violent sexual message than a message of growth and awakening yourself.
Maynard alluded - in an interview - to the fact that their music is a reflection of their own personal mental development. Which is why songs from Undertow are qualitatively different from 10,000 days. I get the impression that Undertow has a lot of intellectual/mental frustration involved in it, a coming into being sort of feel to it. Whereas 10,000 days and Lateralus have the aura of 'enlightenment'. Undertow and Aenima lead into the later albums.
In this song, as the others, there appears to be a struggle between the personal identity (ego), its delusions and reality. "knock me down, I'll come back running" might refer to the truth "saturating" the ego which forcefully rejects the truth. Juxtapose this with lyrics from other songs on the same album.
"I'm back down in the undertow"
"Your saturating me"
"I want what I want"
"I sold my soul to make a record"
This message is more apparent I think in light of Lateralus and 10,000 day
In Reflections Maynard sings: And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt Don't want to be down here Soothing my narcissism I Must crucify the ego Before it's far too late I pray the light lifts me out And you will come to find That we are all one mind Capable of all that's Imagined and all conceivable Just let the light touch you And let the words spill through Just let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason.
One point to also consider is that Tool's lyrics contain dualistic meanings, representing both the higher mind (awakening, enlightenment) and the lower mind (sex, violence). For example, this song may be speaking of both the idea of letting truth into yourself and releasing your self-created chains of inhibition both mentally and actively, and also the idea of letting a penis into your rectum (I think I once heard that the anus is 4 degrees higher than the genitalia).
brilliant reply. if every1 would just for once admit that the only thing for certain on earth is that we are all wrong.... every1, every last person is @ least 1% wrong all the time, as well as right, it could be such a wonder world in which to live.
And fool would stop argueing about it. lol oh well
@EmperorElliott thats true, its aswell with stickfist the outer meaning we all hear and lyrics are obviously representing is fisting a form of sexual act but the inner meaning is about how we go so far to let us feel plesure and numb ourselves by feeling these thingss and we still push farther (finger deep, knuckle deep, elbow deep and shoulder deep but some people still argue about the meaning saying fisting is great when they dont look in to it
@EmperorElliott lol idiots will be idiots, i totally agree with ur annalysis of the lyrics....basically the same with "prison sex" not literally being raped by a fellow prisoner than urself now raping another, but a metaphor for the circle of abuse.
i wonder if this song was really about anal sex or trying to talk a girl into it? rumor has it that a female anus is 4 degrees warmer than her vagina.... but then again tools song can be interpreted in any fashion. its all perception from your own mind.... thanks for the post!!
it could be about freedom in a way. like how there is something in us all that is being suppressed, like a clam beneath castles. Let's go digging and see what we are really capable without fear.
@sinzorak Most of James's song are sexual. The rest are about this so called story of his catatonic mother, which I believe is a fabricated story to have something to write about. Maynard is notorious for lying to his fans so it's no surprise that he would create a false story pertaining to what his songs actually mean. The joy of Maynard's lyricism is that all of the songs can be interpreted in many many ways through metaphor and such.
HAHAHA! True. But at the same time, I feel as though every Tool song, especially the ones which are jokingly about anal sex, is all about overcoming certain situations that leave you feeling like you're getting butt-raped.
what do you mean? the dude before me sed "jokingly about anal sex" i didn't mean litterally i noe that's not wat stinkfist is about but when Maynard starts saying things like "deep within you, finger, knuckle, elbow deep inside the border line" and even with the title stinkfist i mean it kind of does JOKINGLY seem like it could be talkin about anal, not literally but jokingly, atleast to me
@faceomlette yeah, definitely. "do unto others" i checked you page on accident not really knowing how to directly reply but kudos on the drumming, good shit
@faceomlette to the prison sex comment, Its about Molestation, the name makes perfect sense. Although you are right, Manerd Did say that their music is for the thinker, that they can be perceived in any way.
@faceomlette prison sex made sense, it's about child molestation, and it's like a prison when you are being molested, you have no power. then you live your life corrupted by the prison you escaped always afraid to go back. the only song i don't have an answer to is hooker with a penis.
@stratrocker12 A buddy of mine (major tool fan) said it was about when the band was touring for their 1st album, apparently some kid came up to them and called them sell-outs. And Maynard is refering to the kid as the hooker or the penis (idk which) Just another metaphorical way to express a situation.
@stratrocker12 Hooker with a Penis is about selling yourself to the music industry, like a prostitute. The penis part of it means the guy he was talking to got more than he bargained for from the conversation (i.e. The surprise you get when your hooker has a penis.) At least that's my interpretation.
@faceomlette good point bad example. prison sex involved how his step father abused him in multiple way. its a metaphor for feeling like a prisoner in your own home/life and being subjected to horrible things by someone else who lives there as well just like a prisoner in jail being forced to have prison sex
@faceomlette In a way, they DO go with the song, just not in the way you'd expect. Many Tool songs portray a general idea, not a specific situation. Prison Sex, for instance, seems to portray feelings of violation, having something dear taken from you forcefully, similar to the feeling of Prison Sex (Unwilling). Even Hooker With a Penis: A hooker is just a whore, does whatever you tell it. (Like consumerist society) With a penis implies him talking to the 'boy wearing Vans, 501s' etc.
@pearljam311 Most Tool songs are clever metaphors wrapped around something meant to make you take notice. So cleverly written they can be about anything each individual listener wants it to be about. We just all share the same dick joke....dick jokes are the super glue that keeps us all grounded. It's obvious Maynard isn't just talking about anal sex or actual ticks & leeches sucking him dry. I give him props for the two birds with one stone approach to song writing.
sounds like he's talking about butt fucking another guy. ummmm i'm about yo reevaluate my views on maynard's lyrics. that shit is weird

"take it all" (in the butt)

"bring it out and take it back in" (dick in butt)
"you won't do what you'd like to do" (vaginal intercourse)
"lay back and let me show you another way" (butt sex)
Maynard is singing about anal sex, ladies and gentlemen.
I guess that can be dismissed as 'just my interpretation'.

do some reasearch, this song is jokingly about anal sex lol, Your anus is 4 degress warmer than your body haha

"Kill what you want me to, take what's left and eat it." How does that fit into your anal sex theory?

If that is the case why do they make rectal thermometers?
WrongBullToMessWith 2 years ago
I don't get the downvotes on this comment, are people really taking the lyrics at face value? That's a rather disappointing thought that people would rather take a violent sexual message than a message of growth and awakening yourself.

@arealsafag i agree man
xjustin523x 2 years ago
You get it. But don't be disappointed, it's just how we're raised. Enlightenment doesn't happen that easy.
The anal cavity is 4degrees warmer then the vaginal. That's why the anal reference, not just because it was on the same album as prison sex.

Rybot9000 2 years ago
In this song, as the others, there appears to be a struggle between the personal identity (ego), its delusions and reality. "knock me down, I'll come back running" might refer to the truth "saturating" the ego which forcefully rejects the truth. Juxtapose this with lyrics from other songs on the same album.
"I'm back down in the undertow"
"Your saturating me"
"I want what I want"
"I sold my soul to make a record"
This message is more apparent I think in light of Lateralus and 10,000 day

Consider this when interpreting the lyrics to this song:
"Free yourself from yourself"
"All the way in"
"Let it go in"
Rybot9000 2 years ago
Right... and this song in particular seems to be about helping to heal someone else rather than himself.

I would tend to agree with your interpretation overall...and thanks for the biology lesson!

brilliant reply. if every1 would just for once admit that the only thing for certain on earth is that we are all wrong.... every1, every last person is @ least 1% wrong all the time, as well as right, it could be such a wonder world in which to live.
And fool would stop argueing about it. lol oh well
pixxiehillpixxie 1 year ago
@EmperorElliott thats true, its aswell with stickfist the outer meaning we all hear and lyrics are obviously representing is fisting a form of sexual act but the inner meaning is about how we go so far to let us feel plesure and numb ourselves by feeling these thingss and we still push farther (finger deep, knuckle deep, elbow deep and shoulder deep but some people still argue about the meaning saying fisting is great when they dont look in to it
killrnick77 10 months ago
@EmperorElliott lol idiots will be idiots, i totally agree with ur annalysis of the lyrics....basically the same with "prison sex" not literally being raped by a fellow prisoner than urself now raping another, but a metaphor for the circle of abuse.

i wonder if this song was really about anal sex or trying to talk a girl into it? rumor has it that a female anus is 4 degrees warmer than her vagina.... but then again tools song can be interpreted in any fashion. its all perception from your own mind.... thanks for the post!!
pearljam311 3 years ago 6
you know im having the same problem lol,
it could be about freedom in a way. like how there is something in us all that is being suppressed, like a clam beneath castles. Let's go digging and see what we are really capable without fear.
sinzorak 3 years ago 4
@sinzorak Most of James's song are sexual. The rest are about this so called story of his catatonic mother, which I believe is a fabricated story to have something to write about. Maynard is notorious for lying to his fans so it's no surprise that he would create a false story pertaining to what his songs actually mean. The joy of Maynard's lyricism is that all of the songs can be interpreted in many many ways through metaphor and such.
KhaoNeu 1 year ago
@KhaoNeu But if you just take the lyrics are they are, I believe this song is about persuading a girl into giving her virginity to him.
KhaoNeu 1 year ago
@KhaoNeu I have to say i agree with you. being tend to argue the semantics, but i believe it's about taking a girls virginity.

No offense, but i doubt it's like that because a lot of tool's song names don't really go with the song...example (Prison Sex)

I've tried to come back to the deeper meaning of this song, but it's still sounds like he's trying to buttplug the holy hell out of a person.

HAHAHA! True. But at the same time, I feel as though every Tool song, especially the ones which are jokingly about anal sex, is all about overcoming certain situations that leave you feeling like you're getting butt-raped.

iLoveOlivaMunn 2 years ago
what do you mean? the dude before me sed "jokingly about anal sex" i didn't mean litterally i noe that's not wat stinkfist is about but when Maynard starts saying things like "deep within you, finger, knuckle, elbow deep inside the border line" and even with the title stinkfist i mean it kind of does JOKINGLY seem like it could be talkin about anal, not literally but jokingly, atleast to me
okdontnoewattoput 2 years ago
@faceomlette prison sex is a reference to rape and anal sex. seriously, how could you not get that?
AcidPhos69 1 year ago
@AcidPhos69 in a way but it's really about maynards childhood and how he was abused and how the circle of abuse continues
faceomlette 1 year ago
@faceomlette yeah, definitely. "do unto others" i checked you page on accident not really knowing how to directly reply but kudos on the drumming, good shit

@faceomlette to the prison sex comment, Its about Molestation, the name makes perfect sense. Although you are right, Manerd Did say that their music is for the thinker, that they can be perceived in any way.

@faceomlette prision sex is about rape
an in jails they rape u ._.
navarro181 1 year ago
@faceomlette face is actually not bout prison sex its about child abuse and family rape...saw it in a 93'interview with maynard
gscott419 1 year ago
@faceomlette prison sex made sense, it's about child molestation, and it's like a prison when you are being molested, you have no power. then you live your life corrupted by the prison you escaped always afraid to go back. the only song i don't have an answer to is hooker with a penis.
stratrocker12 1 year ago
@stratrocker12 A buddy of mine (major tool fan) said it was about when the band was touring for their 1st album, apparently some kid came up to them and called them sell-outs. And Maynard is refering to the kid as the hooker or the penis (idk which) Just another metaphorical way to express a situation.
EETMORECHIKN 1 year ago
@stratrocker12 Hooker with a Penis is about selling yourself to the music industry, like a prostitute. The penis part of it means the guy he was talking to got more than he bargained for from the conversation (i.e. The surprise you get when your hooker has a penis.) At least that's my interpretation.
feihcretsam711 1 year ago 2
@faceomlette good point bad example. prison sex involved how his step father abused him in multiple way. its a metaphor for feeling like a prisoner in your own home/life and being subjected to horrible things by someone else who lives there as well just like a prisoner in jail being forced to have prison sex
AJlord1 1 year ago
@faceomlette In a way, they DO go with the song, just not in the way you'd expect. Many Tool songs portray a general idea, not a specific situation. Prison Sex, for instance, seems to portray feelings of violation, having something dear taken from you forcefully, similar to the feeling of Prison Sex (Unwilling). Even Hooker With a Penis: A hooker is just a whore, does whatever you tell it. (Like consumerist society) With a penis implies him talking to the 'boy wearing Vans, 501s' etc.

@faceomlette wtf prision sex has to do what he says in the lyrics

@pearljam311 so sad and ignorant interpretation. anal sex? phew.
there is life outside sex, you know?
Raeafu 1 year ago
@pearljam311 Most Tool songs are clever metaphors wrapped around something meant to make you take notice. So cleverly written they can be about anything each individual listener wants it to be about. We just all share the same dick joke....dick jokes are the super glue that keeps us all grounded. It's obvious Maynard isn't just talking about anal sex or actual ticks & leeches sucking him dry. I give him props for the two birds with one stone approach to song writing.
