From a surface perspective it makes sense, energy costs more, so everything you buy even if it is not energy will increase because it takes energy to make those products. Consumers stop spending because things are to expensive, so prices on those products will be raised to where even more people can not buy the products and suddenly are current recession looks pretty good.

Its cheaper to buy it from other countries than build the refineries and drilling platforms here. If we really wanted to we could basically bankrupt the saudis and who ever sells us oil overnight. We have enough natural gas and oil here as well as coal and other natural resources.
