Had they shot Michael or Fredo on the causeway, that would have been it for Barzini and his men, Sonny'd probably show up with a Tommy Gun, no cloak-and-dagger stuff with him. Killing Sonny first meant Barzini would haven't to worry about any immediate revenge attacks since the other Corleones were more level-headed

Barzini was behind all the killings once Vito refused Sollozo.Vito said after the meeting of the 5 families."it was barzini all along".Barzini wanted to clean out the oldfashion heads and start with new blood,they called them "turks" Barzini was very powerfull and pulled off that sonny killing like a pro with weaponry not seen with sonny or even vito.Barzini couldn't deal with a sonny type who's reasoning was always clouded.
