@Baltasar2000 "You cant get more "fast food philosopy" than Dawkins."
To be honest, facts and science are better than philosophy. Philosophy does not offer much any more. Dawkins is not a philosopher, he's a scientist. And that's a good thing.
Well...having grown up in probably the most atheist country in the world (the Czech Republic, hello!), I can hardly imagine what it must be like to be an atheist in the US. And I am getting more and more scared as I am trying to go to college to the US...
@Aanthanur That's nice. Stellar Evolution states that there is no evidence the moon can be seen with the naked eye either. I know you want to tell me I'm wrong, and you are welcome to do that. Would you first look up Stellar Evolution and read about it's process and how it says the moon was formed first before you use up our time? Thank you.
Agreed. I read it in a book on how the solar system was formed and it turned me away from stellar evolution. To sum up, it states that the moon gets further away from Earth with each orbit. Every year it is 3 inches further away at any point than it was the year before at that same point. While 3 inches is not a lot and quite frankly is even less important over great stellar distances, after 10s of thousands of years of orbiting Earth, the moon would break orbit and float away out of sight.
@Aanthanur Oh, I really wish I was. A scientist and author from Berkeley would disagree. The 3 inch thing was discovered at Berkeley and published in a Stellar Evolution book about what followed the Big Bang. The scientists that I've studied are pretty much agreeing on the distance the moon would be at when it broke away. Somewhere between the 3 inch observation and the breakaway orbit there is a moderate math problem. I downloaded his video, read his book, and did the math. I wish it was wrong.
@DraftMasterJohn when it would have been a discovery as you say, it would not have been published in a book but in a respected and peer reviewed journal.
@Aanthanur True. Then if 'not an invention' is a limiting factor, what about DNA? Was finding out about DNA a discovery? Since my original blog in this line was about stellar objects, what about Pluto and it's natural satelite, Charon. Were each of them discoveries?
@Aanthanur I do. What kind of example would I be if I didn't let you show that you do also. That was a good response for avoiding answering the questions. I give you 7.5 out of 10 for the effort. My challenge still stands: Was finding DNA a discovery? Is it discussed in books? If so, is it also in text books? Was finding Pluto a discovery? (same follow up questions) and; Was finding Charon a discovery? (Again, same follow up questions). The court is rented, the ball is in play. Are you able?
@Aanthanur I believe you. So what you are saying is that DNA was a discovery, when it was first discovered it was published in the journal called "Nature", and now it appears in numerous books and textbooks? And that finding Pluto and Charon were also discoveries and followed a similar path: Discovery, publishing in a journal, and later books and textbooks? Does that seem like what you are saying? Thanks.
@Aanthanur A great military commander once said, "I cannot confirm actions that I did not witness." What I am saying is that it did appear in several books, especially a school text book. You stated that it would first appear in a journal, and I believe you, and that makes perfect sense. I never read nor have any knowledge about the journal that it appeared in. However, if you are sure about discoveries appearing in journals before text books, then we can draw an educated assumption. Can't we?
@Itzmrrtis I have an invisible pet dragon, he's green. He died today, for me, and said I'm going to dragon heaven if I'm good and do everything he said. The dragon told me to tell everyone about his heaven, because dragons are gods. I wrote this information in a book for you, so you will believe it. I buried the book though, so you won't get saved (sorry!), but maybe your children will. You can't question my claims though, but that shouldn't worry you one bit. All hail the dragon!
Romania is much, much safer for an atheists than North America.
I do not say that Romania has no religions people but the religion there is less extreme probably also thanks to many years of communism and good education.
1500 in a year...mmm, you should put some more effort in spreading your videos, maybe post them as replies to other videos, they are definitely worth listening to and watching of course ^^
Great video, listen to a talk on a serious issue and given by a "purty girl" ^^
I was raised as a roman-catholic, and at the age of 6 or 7 my skeptic nature kicked in, and I asked myself where is god? I don't it, mmm hello, any omnipresent entity around? mmm no answer...I guess it doesn't really exist...
And in case it exists, it doesn't interfere with life on earth in any way, so why worship something like that? In the past people were burned in stakes because of this so called faith...
@every1 Who among u would let a complete stranger in their home, just because they may proclaim to be a good person!??? NOT A SINGLE 1 OF U ... yet u have a problem with God not letting u into heaven, which just so happens to be His home! lol... His word is warning to u and u all simply just mock Him n blaspheme with all your hearts, while cheering on others who do the same! " Your time is running out!" soon the laughter will be over n all will have to face Him n it won't be any laughter then
yeah wow, I hope I was drunk when I wrote that. what I attempted to describe was that at least at the schools on the east side, (read affulence) mormonism was prevalent yet uncool, sorta eurocentric, this was the '80's so I'm likely older than your friend. really my comment was more a defensive protest at lumping in utah mormons with evangelical southerners, though weird is the word for all ;)
@funkskull - Oh, I bet affluence (and therefore education and being well-traveled) does have a lot to do with it. Even Methodism, the denomination I grew up in, has different personalities when you compare small town with affluent urban areas. The more affluent/traveled/educated the community, the more accepting and less dogmatic religions tend to be.
@ReligiousFiction quite, funny how when mormon missionaries travel to countries with enviable lifestyles/cultures they will often loose faith, though i understand this is less common now as religeous conversion in europe, japan etc, is almost futile, thus missionaries are mostly sent to the u.s. and the rest of the americas
Its weird to think Americans discriminate against atheists so much. Our deputy Prime Minister in the UK is an atheist and it was a complete non-issue during the election. The U.S is supposed to be the land of the free and all that.
I live in northern England and amoung people my age (25) atheism is definitely the norm. Most peoples parents are religious but dont take everything too literally.
You said that if your boss knew about your atheism and YouTube videos, she might ask you to take down your videos and channel. At least one atheist YouTuber had that happen to her. Does your boss support the right of free speech? If so, she should support YOUR right to produce videos that express your viewpoint, if not she is not a true American.
If anybody thinks less of you for being an atheist, then you need new family and friends,,,,or move to down under where it never even comes up,,,aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi
i really appreciate your videos. you have explained many of my same thoughts and feelings with an easy and intelligent approach. i look forward to watching the rest of your videos. i also look forward to future posts.
Thank you for your video. I admire Dawkins, Pat Condell and Thunderf00t but sometimes Athiesm needs a feminine touch rather than the "take no enemies"/act now delivery that is their hallmarks.
The fears you list are ones I myself have felt. You are not alone, and I greatly appreciate your efforts to discuss these issues in a public forum, where other atheists can take heart and not feel they have to hide their atheism so much, and know that they are not anomalies, not weird or evil. Still monotheistic religions are incredibly coercive, and many Christians will not hesitate to persecute atheists if they think they can get away with it.
The universe is not man-made. Atheists and evolutionists shouldn't be asked any questions, because essentially: THEY DON'T KNOW WHERE ANYTHING CAME FROM AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHERE ANYONE IS GOING AFTER DEATH.
@DavidofChrist777 You do not know either. You ae simply asserting that you know without proof. Remember, the definition of faith is belief without proof.
You say they shouldn't be asked any questions. The tone of your message conveys FEAR and desperation on your part. You fear thought and reasoning and Hell. Atheists are scaring you because deep down you know they are right and your life is a lie.
I have to back you about your justified fears of letting it be known you are an Atheist in Texas. We may not be in a Theocracy, but I can personally tell you that I faced professional backlash when I declined an invite to a religious event and then was pushed until I felt compelled to admit I was an Atheist. Shortly thereafter, I was let go from the company despite being relatively fast-tracked up until that point.
@HOLYdpsBATMAN This was all pre-recession. I was told in no uncertain terms that my ideology no longer ran parallel to that of the firm by which I was working. I was allowed, ever so gracefully, to resign. I did find it tough to find meaningful employment following the way in which my resignation was handled.
It is not that we are having our life threatened, just out lifestyes... Simply for abandoning a view that has no basis in fact. Everything is bigger in Texas, including prejudice.
why is it that in america, atheist and religious people seem to be at each other throats? here in the netherlands 34% of the Dutch citizens believe there is a god", whereas 37% believe there is some sort of spirit or life force", 27% that "they do not believe there is any sort of spirit, god, or life force". and yet we don't fight about it like in america. atheist and religious people do have debates but they are calm and at the end they part without looking they could kill each other.
ATHEISM IS ON THE RISE IN AMERICA :-) THIS IS EXCITING BECAUSE OF THIS ENLIGHTENMENT AGAINST GOD WELL RESULT IN DESTRUCTION FOR MAN KIND LOOK FORWARD TO WAR; FAMINE; AND MARTIAL LAW & NO NEED TO WONDER WHY THIS ALL WILL HAPPEN... SINCE ITS ALL PRE WRITTEN. THE RESULTS OF SUCH NEW ENLIGHTENMENT OF SCIENCE BASED THEORY WILL LEAD TO WHAT IS TO COME IN THE NEXT YEARS... if you are happy being a Atheist BE HAPPY if you are happy believing in GOd be happy the truth will be revealed & THATS THAT :-)
@DamonParisOfficial It was also in response to your posting. dismisses all the man-made gods as the same thing. We've created tens of thousands of gods to answer complex questions with simple answers. I disbelieve the god of Christians is any different. I'm not science-based, they want evidence. I require no evidence for or against any of the gods.
It would take a god for us to be sinners. We are not born bad with sin. We are capable of so much. We should take credit and blame for our deeds.:)
@matthewtaylorbrown thanks for the fast reply :-) no god? ARE WE 2 BE OUR OWN GODS 2 EXPLORE THE REALM OF LIFE WITH NO BOUNDARIES, IS MAN REALLY CAPABLE OF THIS RESPONSIBILITY WITHOUT DESTROYING THE EARTH & EACHOTHER? I wonder about this sometimes maybe there is a reason why man is only able 2 use a small percentage of our brain & many are feeling god like now imagine what it would be like if we were able 2 use 100% of our brain.I truly feel there is a power above us :-) thanks for the feedback
@DamonParisOfficial I'm not sure why man would be gods just because there are no gods. Is it necessary to replace one false god with another? Haven't we been exploring the realm of life? We have organ transplants and abortions. We have atomic weapons and peace. I'm not sure about destroying the earth, but it is possible that we could kill each other off. Has religion kept this from happening? I can't see a connection between brain use percentages and the existence of gods. You are very gracious
@matthewtaylorbrown :-) I wouldn't say that religion has saved us I WOULD SAY ITS THE GRACE OF GOD that has kept this world for not falling apart, IF I was to tell you that AMERICA will be destroyed as we know it now and our freedom lost would you believe me? what if this did happen would you then asked me how did I know this and I god shared this info to me would you turn back accepting God back into your life? IM WONDERING :-) THaNKS FOR YOUR all your USEFUL INFO. have a good one
@DamonParisOfficial I would believe you. The Catholic, atheist, LDS, and Muslim populations are growing. The other Christian populations are shrinking. Latino Catholics coming from the south and the immigrant/resident Muslims both have huge families. These two growing populations will eventually dominate the U.S. I would say that 'destroyed' is a violent term, no violence will be needed. Our Constitution allows for these changes, but will probably been tossed out in favor of Sharia Law.
@matthewtaylorbrown do you feel people will just throw out there belief & our constitution without any bloodshed? hmm the increase in guns sales are off the chart since Mr Obama has taking over the job of the Bush family ect; Sheria Law can not kill what is in the deeply ingraved in the hearts of man, hard times are coming, have U seen the half a million coffins waiting at some of the major airports? SOMETHING MAJOR IS COMING 2 AMERICA CITIES; DID u ever Believe in god? what made you change?:-)
@DamonParisOfficial People won't give up their beliefs. Are we killing the fastest growing U.S. population (Central & South Americans) now? When would we start killing the Muslims from around the world coming and populating the U.S. at 8 kids per family? We have 9 million Muslims now. Protestant Americans are shrinking in population, there isn't one in the Supreme court.
I doubted at 11-12, atheist by 16-17. Atheist after reading the Bible.
I like you because you're open and you are aware of how people think. And I find your positive attitude towards life and the future quite attractive :-).
Here are some atheistic (or highly agnostic) populations: 85% Sweden; 65% Japan; 54% France; 44% Britain. In the USA, it has gone up something like 20% in the past 20 years. These figures were from about 2 or 3 years ago.
I believe that if humans last long enough, religion will become basically obsolete.
The situation here, in the Czech Republic, is very different. Almost nobody believes in god. The Czech Republic has one of the least religious populations in the world. More than 70% of the Czech people consider themselves irreligious. In fact, when somebody says he/she believes in god, other people can find it very unusual or even strange.
I don't know exactly why the number of theists has declined so much over the last approximately 60 years, but I suposse it was caused by all the bad things our country had to go through (both World Wars, communism,...).
@vlaskja I don't know exactly why the number of theists has declined so much over the last approximately 60 years, but I suposse it was caused by all the bad things our country had to go through (both World Wars, communism,...).
dude were you in utah you would be socially and economically ostracised for not being a skiing or climbing guide as you seem to have the body for it. as a mormon who abandoned his religeon at age 11 as did the rest of my family later, it's all fucking good to be a non mormon in slc, in fact preferable in my jr high and high school. I live temporarilly now in marietta ga. now and I long for the comparitively scandavian lifestyle of salt lake city.
@funkskull - Wow - you wrote to me a long time ago and I'm just now seeing the comment! Sorry! I'm glad to hear that in SLC things are chilling out about religion. My friend lived there as a young girl and was ostracized the minute the kids found out she didn't know what a 'stake' or a 'ward' was, or where her dad went on his 'mission.' It's cool that your whole family sort of left the fold, so to speak! And I bet Georgia IS a big cultural difference.
I have grown to deeply respect your openness and honest approach to religion and atheism.
I see for myself how very detrimental religion has had on my own life, having experienced a spiritual awakening I entered into a church that was merely teaching the traditons of men,in other words, dead and lifeless dribble.
I hate what christianity represents today, bigotry, condemnation, hatred, etc,,
I wish to elaborate on my question to you regarding your possible support of Socialism. If you do- I would be curious as to your motivations. I have many close friends and family members (primarily my Father) who do support Socialistic ideas. Their primary motivation is a strong sense of compassion for others, which I share with them. I do not support the use of force (i.e. government) to compel people to work for the benefit of others, compassion must be voluntary. Care to share your thoughts?
@1RationalMind - Thanks for clarifying your question. The reason I used that tone is that an easy way to poke fun at certain Fox commentators is to imitate how they say 'atheist', 'socialist', and other descriptions as if they're dirty words. I have very little knowledge of how socialism would look in practice. Other than an idealistic slant on a caricature of socialism, I'm afraid I can't help you better understand someone who's actually socialist. I'm sure compassion is the biggest draw.
@ReligiousFiction Thank you for your response, I have a few anecdotal cases of reasonably rational & compassionate people leaning to Socialism, I am always curious to examine the reasonings of such people. As to Fox commentators, I agree with your sentiment there. For as much as I agree with Glenn Beck's libertarian political stance- he sickens me when he makes claims that this country was "founded on God-centered Judeo-Christian values" O'Rielly is just overall disagreeable, in my opinion.
I am curious- at 4:57 you state "...or worse- Socialist.", with a tone that suggests you may feel it is ridiculous to apply a negative connotation the term. Are you a proponent of Socialism? If so, by what reasoning do you support such a belief?
@ReligiousFiction But wouldn't mental freedom without physical freedom make it meaningless. Every belief infringes on every other belief in some way. Every Individual, society, and religion is tolerant only to that which they tolerate and want to limit the rest.
for Instance: Does a person have the right to be protected from the beliefs of others being forced upon them. If yes then doesn't that give a fundy the right to prevent science being forced upon their children.
@BigAtheist - Your example is where it gets sticky. Does a parent have the right to bring up a child in exactly the manner the parent wishes? At what point is the child able to autonomously reject/embrace his/her upbringing? Who determines what is abuse, and what is a right?
I don't think the lack of physical freedom makes mental freedom totally meaningless. As Hamlet pointed out, he could be locked in a nutshell but still be a king of unbounded space. Attitude and perspective can make us free.
@ReligiousFiction I find, dispute fiction to the contrary, the only thing you get from being lock in a nutshell is that it usually just drives you nuts.
@ReligiousFiction Its funny, I was cleaning up my subscription/subscribers list (mostly removing closed accounts) and came across Defender of Reason...there was a classy talented atheist. From what I hear, she was silenced to fit the nutshell of her job. If you want to believe people should be happy not being able to act upon their own beliefs you got to ask yourselves would you be. I think it is unreasonable to expect others to do it either.
@ReligiousFiction Right?Parents do bring their children up in the manner they wish.Children will reject/embrace as they grow so they will decide(there is no timescale for it).Freedom is in the mind first.AsTimothy Leary( in jail) said to his guards "I`m not the prisoner here, you are.".Attitude and perspective does make you free-but also can imprison, just look at any believers videos.
@holmsatlarge -I agree with you but I do have to add that yes, children get to evaluate their parents' beliefs for the most part, but some systems of belief prevent people from growing up and truly looking rationally at things. For example, the fear of eternal torture is enough to drive some people to never, never leave their religion - to never even think about it.
@ReligiousFiction Imprint theory((instant non-verbal learning) lies behind all our isms.Societal operant conditioning carries it into every day life. The reason some get doubt is that the imprint event was not tied to the ism of those around them.Imprinting is a random event, which explains much of the quirkiness of human behaviour. It isn`t fear that stops them it is the imprint-trying to break an imprint is like cutting down a tree with a rubber band.
@ReligiousFiction For imprint theory see the work of Konrad Lenz through Timothy Leary,et al.For operant conditioning see the work of B.F.Skinner,et al.For a little extra, see the work of Persinger(Laurentian University)on electro-magnetic stimulation of the brain-he is able to create seemingly real experiences.
@ReligiousFiction I find that many atheists present the idea that somehow atheism will create a utopia. This I find a fallacy as we are only unitied by a lack of belief in god.People will still squabble and disagree about many things. It will not usher in a Golden Age, just close the door on a bad idea.Life is short.
@holmsatlarge Atheism could never bring utopia, because it is simply the lack of belief in a god. I think when atheists talk about a future utopia without religion, what most of them are getting at is dropping the irration and cruelty inherent in most religions. Certainly we have to have philosophies and such to guide us, like humanism. Because humans have both selfish and giving tendencies, we'd still need to focus on the good attributes. HOWEVER, dropping religion and looking at humanity
@holmsatlarge (cont) objectively, as with atheism, naturalism, etc - makes this much, much easier. When we don't have magical made-up beings telling us how we should or shouldn't behave, we can take an objective look at our goals and our predispositions and make better choices that way.
@ReligiousFiction I have taken the time to peruse your videos and they are clear, concise and well thought out,HOWEVER;),I recall a South Park episode of rival atheist groups fighting over who has the right atheism. Now,although that was an animation,I think it illustrates my thesis of imprinting/operant conditioning as the primary force behind all our isms. Religions all agree there is a godthingy, but they disagree over whose is the right godthingy and how to "worship".Why(rhetorical)?
@ReligiousFiction As for philosophy,it is at best.the writer`s personal experience expressed as a belief system. It therefore is no better than religion.Situational ethics and enlightened self interest are better tools to make choices.Predispositions are the outward signs of our imprinting(see how I use you to validate me).Keep up the good work,as there are those whose imprinting didn`t gell around their godthingy-but their societiy`s operant conditioning still persists.
My apologies for getting off topic with rebelq1, I have blocked him from my channel, and he feels the need to chase after me like a little child as I post comments on the pages of other users.
@KableKiB420 - I'm glad to hear you like the blooper reel - I do appreciate comments on the structure of my videos! I was hoping that would break some of the seriousness of the topic. And show that I'm human and have fun after all, even though I'm an "ATHEIST?!?!"
Being an atheist in South Carolina is easy but being out spoken is another story. I have been told that I was evil and a slander of god.
I am well spoken about my atheism and I manage to state my case well enough for most theist will stand down and re frame from slandering me. But I still get funny looks and long glares from theist who believe I'm an extremist for having a bumper sticker that says. "When everyone believed in "GOD" it was the darkages.
I'd like the world to be more like SC in that way - it's easy for you to BE an atheist. But I'd like for more theists to have heard our arguments and 'case' put forward in a reasonable way. That way, they have less ground to stand on in thinking we're inherently evil.
Ah, but I just realized that's the problem with the theology of some - they think ALL people ARE inherently evil. :(
@gustjorodedheo I think sometime deism is a transitional phase toward atheism.
First people realize it's impossible for all these gods to be fake so they say there is only 1 god and then they say well all these religious can't be real so I'm going to just believe in God then they acknowledge I can't prove god then agnosticism and then atheism then the realization that secular humanism is the most rational and universal philosophy known to man and has more significance that any religion
@gustjorodedheo - I don't have much of a take on it - I didn't hang out as a deist any or at all in my journey, but I think it's a very reasonable and logical position to hold. Especially when we realize that yes, there *may* have been a first cause, but NO, we can't ascribe many characteristics to the first cause (including whether it still exists)
I admire much about America's founding fathers, and most of them were deists. Deism is a much better belief than theism - much harder to corrupt.
@saintpine - that sounds very ideal! I'd love for fundamentalists around me to be so open. If they didn't feel threatened by the very existence of people with other beliefs, we could have a much more peaceful and pluralistic society!
I think that the reason why it's easier in Italy is because we are moving towards a massive moderation of Catholic believers, the majority of them are today simply catholics for tradition, to not upset their family, go to church twice a year, and accept the church as a standard for some services like funerals, most of them haven't seriously studied the bible, and unfortunately very few know seriously much about science.
I recently retired from the Marines, well, two years ago. I never had a problem with anyone about my atheism. Of course I'm an opinionated Gunny that loves debate, but there are surprisingly large numbers of enlightened minds in the Marines.
@SecularZone - I'd love to hear more about the camaraderie and interaction among military personnel... There must be respect and trust, and beliefs must be an important arena to either settle or ignore. Like sexuality, perhaps?
Why do you assume that the United States of America is not an acting fiscal theocracy, under the direction of the Dominion? Please don't answer "by the rule of law", or "the U.S. Constitution". There are probably better answers than citing quill and parchment fantasies, if you can provide any.
@DonQuixotedeKaw - I assume the US isn't a theocracy because we have many laws which have nothing to do with the dominant theism, and some which contradict it.
@ReligiousFiction Oh, that you've pretty much explained my exact thoughts on the subject, and any comment i make would be just a re-telling of the same things, haha. So i echo it back to you.
im a 4th generation atheist living in Denmark, and yes. atheism is the majority "faith". we have universal healthcare, free religion, free speech above all(proof: muhammed crisis). a repuplican would go nuts here :-). oh yeah, and we are in the top 10 most intelligent countries in the world. Beat that.... :-)
I have the same exact concerns as you on the issue of my Atheism being prominently known, most especially in relation to Theists in my workplace. The leader of my organization in an overt Christian, I do not know for certain, but I strongly suspect that if my overt Atheism were known to this leader, promotions might be withheld. I do know for certain that the level of respect I would receive at work would be significantly diminished were my Atheism to be advertised.
@rebelq1 Yeah, it is kinda sad kiddo! Thanks for caring! :) But, on the "upside"- I have the respect of friends (oh, including FEMALE friends too, you know- that type of person you despise). Oh- and I have love too- love I've earned by being a man of character, intelligence and compassion. Has your hatred, pettiness and childishness earned you these things? Let me guess... they have not- am I right?
@rebelq1 Granted, you did not use the word "despise", but your highly derogatory comments regarding women on my "Tagged" vid make it clear to anyone of reasonable intellect that you have little respect for women. You despise Jews too, apparently, according to a comment of yours I happened upon a few days ago. You are an ignorant, petty little bigot. Bigots almost always truly feel inferior, deep inside, and they attempt to make themselves seem "better" by putting others down. You are pitiable.
@rebelq1 Review my "Tagged" vid Undercover343, if you have forgotten. I will not repeat your hateful sentiments here, they are vile and unworthy of restatement. While I have your attention again, allow me to restate a sentiment worth repeating- you are a pitiable soul, and you have earned the full depth of my pity. I offer you a suggestion- let go of your irrational hate, it does not serve you well. The longer you keep it, the longer you will remain pitiable.
@rebelq1 I call you childish, not because you disagree with me, but because you rant on with petty name calling like a little boy trying to be a bully on the playground. You cannot debate in a adult fashion. If you want respect, you must earn it. In a public forum of discussion such as YT, the primary action that will earn you that respect is civility. You have a serious lack of civility. Don't expect people to be nice to you when you're an ass.
1RationalMind, you are a stomach-churning imbecile! 'The ASSHOLE on your back'
Now surely you don't hate being male that much do you?
That isn't "her body" she's carrying, that's HIS CHILD and he has every right in the world to force her into carrying it until it gets born if he wants it!
Men aren't sperm backs to inseminate something and then be told 'you don't have any rights to the child'!
@rationalway You are irrational, and your username is a gross misnomer- these are simple facts. I'm happy to "churn your stomach" actually, thanks for letting me know I do so- you have brought some pleasure to my day. I see you as an angry little child, and I weigh your opinions with that assessment in mind. Here's a clue- don't have sex with a woman who doesn't consider your input on a possible child important. You Socialists want mommy government to handle everything, because YOU can't do it.
@1RationalMind, Actually libertarian losers like you who think that small near anarchist governments are going to last are childish, ignorant and foolish!
I wonder how hard can it be to take down one of your fantasy governments with a coup?
@1RationalMind, YOUR username is mask designed to hide the face of a slow-minded hypocrite! You are rational the same why that North Korea is a democratic people's republic!
@rationalway I have conveyed to you my opinion on your childish nature- you are fully aware of it. That is sufficient for me. Further interaction with a child-like mind such as yours is sure to be a waste of time. I have nothing to learn from you, you are of no value to me at all. I blocked you on YT a long time ago for childish behavior. Now, I disregard you as a pathetic being unworthy of even a second of my time. You will be completely ignored from this point on. Rant away if you wish.
BTW, a embryo/fetus isn't a possession, you ignorant, labelling, childish, slow-minded fool! And just like you said, sometime in the future science might allow males to carry the child so she doesn't have to worry about being forced to carry it anymore!
@rationalway "Men aren't sperm backs" You meant sperm BANKS, of course. I never said they were. Children react like that- angrily assuming without critical thought. I assume you're rebelq1 & the various other sockpuppets, that's fairly obvious. Wow- you "chase after me" so fervently- why? I am confident & independent-minded enough not to care that your opinion differs from mine- but YOU can't say the same- you CARE what I think, your persistent actions SCREAM out that you do, and it's pathetic.
@rationalway It is a rational argument, & I am not surprised you are incapable of recognizing it. You want your Nanny State to protect you because the truth is you are too scared to face the harsh realities of life. You want your Nanny to point a gun at those who don't agree with your childish desires & force them to do what you want. You setup sockpuppet accounts and rant childish ignorance. You have earned my deepest pity- you are supremely pathetic. You are not a man, you are a little child.
@1RationalMind, when you start acting like a person who values equal rights for men you MIGHT just be considered an adult male or female whatever you are!

To be honest, facts and science are better than philosophy. Philosophy does not offer much any more. Dawkins is not a philosopher, he's a scientist. And that's a good thing.

Aanthanur 6 months ago
@Aanthanur That's nice. Stellar Evolution states that there is no evidence the moon can be seen with the naked eye either. I know you want to tell me I'm wrong, and you are welcome to do that. Would you first look up Stellar Evolution and read about it's process and how it says the moon was formed first before you use up our time? Thank you.
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn what? thats just crazy talk.
Aanthanur 4 months ago
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn wow you are hugely misstaken
Aanthanur 4 months ago
@Aanthanur Oh, I really wish I was. A scientist and author from Berkeley would disagree. The 3 inch thing was discovered at Berkeley and published in a Stellar Evolution book about what followed the Big Bang. The scientists that I've studied are pretty much agreeing on the distance the moon would be at when it broke away. Somewhere between the 3 inch observation and the breakaway orbit there is a moderate math problem. I downloaded his video, read his book, and did the math. I wish it was wrong.
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn when it would have been a discovery as you say, it would not have been published in a book but in a respected and peer reviewed journal.
Aanthanur 4 months ago
@Aanthanur The invention of airplane flight was a discovery and it is published in books. Or is it?
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn oh dear, that was an invention and not a discovery.
Aanthanur 4 months ago
@Aanthanur True. Then if 'not an invention' is a limiting factor, what about DNA? Was finding out about DNA a discovery? Since my original blog in this line was about stellar objects, what about Pluto and it's natural satelite, Charon. Were each of them discoveries?
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn ??? you really dont know the difference between a discovery and a invention?
Aanthanur 4 months ago
@Aanthanur I do. What kind of example would I be if I didn't let you show that you do also. That was a good response for avoiding answering the questions. I give you 7.5 out of 10 for the effort. My challenge still stands: Was finding DNA a discovery? Is it discussed in books? If so, is it also in text books? Was finding Pluto a discovery? (same follow up questions) and; Was finding Charon a discovery? (Again, same follow up questions). The court is rented, the ball is in play. Are you able?
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn DNA was a discovery and was published in the Journal "Nature"
Pluto was a discovery and was published in "Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific"
Charon's discovery was published in the journal "Astronomical Journal"
that is what scientists do when they present theyr evidence. publish a paper in a respected journal.
Aanthanur 4 months ago
@Aanthanur I believe you. So what you are saying is that DNA was a discovery, when it was first discovered it was published in the journal called "Nature", and now it appears in numerous books and textbooks? And that finding Pluto and Charon were also discoveries and followed a similar path: Discovery, publishing in a journal, and later books and textbooks? Does that seem like what you are saying? Thanks.
DraftMasterJohn 4 months ago
@DraftMasterJohn so that alleged discovery about the moon was never published im any peer reviewed journal, is that what you are saying?
Aanthanur 4 months ago

In the past people were burned in stakes because of this so called faith...

yeah wow, I hope I was drunk when I wrote that. what I attempted to describe was that at least at the schools on the east side, (read affulence) mormonism was prevalent yet uncool, sorta eurocentric, this was the '80's so I'm likely older than your friend. really my comment was more a defensive protest at lumping in utah mormons with evangelical southerners, though weird is the word for all ;)
funkskull 1 year ago
@funkskull - Oh, I bet affluence (and therefore education and being well-traveled) does have a lot to do with it. Even Methodism, the denomination I grew up in, has different personalities when you compare small town with affluent urban areas. The more affluent/traveled/educated the community, the more accepting and less dogmatic religions tend to be.
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction quite, funny how when mormon missionaries travel to countries with enviable lifestyles/cultures they will often loose faith, though i understand this is less common now as religeous conversion in europe, japan etc, is almost futile, thus missionaries are mostly sent to the u.s. and the rest of the americas

Its weird to think Americans discriminate against atheists so much. Our deputy Prime Minister in the UK is an atheist and it was a complete non-issue during the election. The U.S is supposed to be the land of the free and all that.

I have to back you about your justified fears of letting it be known you are an Atheist in Texas. We may not be in a Theocracy, but I can personally tell you that I faced professional backlash when I declined an invite to a religious event and then was pushed until I felt compelled to admit I was an Atheist. Shortly thereafter, I was let go from the company despite being relatively fast-tracked up until that point.

why is it that in america, atheist and religious people seem to be at each other throats? here in the netherlands 34% of the Dutch citizens believe there is a god", whereas 37% believe there is some sort of spirit or life force", 27% that "they do not believe there is any sort of spirit, god, or life force". and yet we don't fight about it like in america. atheist and religious people do have debates but they are calm and at the end they part without looking they could kill each other.

@DamonParisOfficial I'm not sure why man would be gods just because there are no gods. Is it necessary to replace one false god with another? Haven't we been exploring the realm of life? We have organ transplants and abortions. We have atomic weapons and peace. I'm not sure about destroying the earth, but it is possible that we could kill each other off.

@DamonParisOfficial People won't give up their beliefs. Are we killing the fastest growing U.S. population (Central & South Americans) now? We should be free to express ourselves apart from fearing repercussions from either our employer or community.

1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind - Thanks for clarifying your question. The reason I used that tone is that an easy way to poke fun at certain Fox commentators is to imitate how they say 'atheist', 'socialist', and other descriptions as if they're dirty words. I have very little knowledge of how socialism would look in practice. Other than an idealistic slant on a caricature of socialism, I'm afraid I can't help you better understand someone who's actually socialist. I'm sure compassion is the biggest draw.
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago

1RationalMind 1 year ago
Does the right to believe what you want, come with the freedom to act according to your beliefs?
BigAtheist 1 year ago
@BigAtheist - Absolutely not. I'm proposing mental freedom, but freedom of actions only insofar as it doesn't infringe on another's rights.
Defining people's rights is where it can get tricky. Especially considering children.
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction But wouldn't mental freedom without physical freedom make it meaningless. Every belief infringes on every other belief in some way. Every Individual, society, and religion is tolerant only to that which they tolerate and want to limit the rest.
for Instance: Does a person have the right to be protected from the beliefs of others being forced upon them. If yes then doesn't that give a fundy the right to prevent science being forced upon their children.
BigAtheist 1 year ago
@BigAtheist - Your example is where it gets sticky. Does a parent have the right to bring up a child in exactly the manner the parent wishes? At what point is the child able to autonomously reject/embrace his/her upbringing? Who determines what is abuse, and what is a right?
I don't think the lack of physical freedom makes mental freedom totally meaningless. As Hamlet pointed out, he could be locked in a nutshell but still be a king of unbounded space. Attitude and perspective can make us free.
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction I find, dispute fiction to the contrary, the only thing you get from being lock in a nutshell is that it usually just drives you nuts.
BigAtheist 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction Its funny, I was cleaning up my subscription/subscribers list (mostly removing closed accounts) and came across Defender of Reason...there was a classy talented atheist. From what I hear, she was silenced to fit the nutshell of her job. If you want to believe people should be happy not being able to act upon their own beliefs you got to ask yourselves would you be. I think it is unreasonable to expect others to do it either.
BigAtheist 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction Right?Parents do bring their children up in the manner they wish.Children will reject/embrace as they grow so they will decide(there is no timescale for it).Freedom is in the mind first.AsTimothy Leary( in jail) said to his guards "I`m not the prisoner here, you are.".Attitude and perspective does make you free-but also can imprison, just look at any believers videos.
holmsatlarge 1 year ago
@holmsatlarge -I agree with you but I do have to add that yes, children get to evaluate their parents' beliefs for the most part, but some systems of belief prevent people from growing up and truly looking rationally at things. For example, the fear of eternal torture is enough to drive some people to never, never leave their religion - to never even think about it.
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction Imprint theory((instant non-verbal learning) lies behind all our isms.Societal operant conditioning carries it into every day life. The reason some get doubt is that the imprint event was not tied to the ism of those around them.Imprinting is a random event, which explains much of the quirkiness of human behaviour. It isn`t fear that stops them it is the imprint-trying to break an imprint is like cutting down a tree with a rubber band.
holmsatlarge 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction For imprint theory see the work of Konrad Lenz through Timothy Leary,et al.For operant conditioning see the work of B.F.Skinner,et al.For a little extra, see the work of Persinger(Laurentian University)on electro-magnetic stimulation of the brain-he is able to create seemingly real experiences.
holmsatlarge 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction I find that many atheists present the idea that somehow atheism will create a utopia. This I find a fallacy as we are only unitied by a lack of belief in god.People will still squabble and disagree about many things. It will not usher in a Golden Age, just close the door on a bad idea.Life is short.
holmsatlarge 1 year ago
@holmsatlarge Atheism could never bring utopia, because it is simply the lack of belief in a god. I think when atheists talk about a future utopia without religion, what most of them are getting at is dropping the irration and cruelty inherent in most religions. Certainly we have to have philosophies and such to guide us, like humanism. Because humans have both selfish and giving tendencies, we'd still need to focus on the good attributes. HOWEVER, dropping religion and looking at humanity
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@holmsatlarge (cont) objectively, as with atheism, naturalism, etc - makes this much, much easier. When we don't have magical made-up beings telling us how we should or shouldn't behave, we can take an objective look at our goals and our predispositions and make better choices that way.
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction I have taken the time to peruse your videos and they are clear, concise and well thought out,HOWEVER;),I recall a South Park episode of rival atheist groups fighting over who has the right atheism. Now,although that was an animation,I think it illustrates my thesis of imprinting/operant conditioning as the primary force behind all our isms. Religions all agree there is a godthingy, but they disagree over whose is the right godthingy and how to "worship".Why(rhetorical)?
holmsatlarge 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction As for philosophy,it is at best.the writer`s personal experience expressed as a belief system. It therefore is no better than religion.Situational ethics and enlightened self interest are better tools to make choices.Predispositions are the outward signs of our imprinting(see how I use you to validate me).Keep up the good work,as there are those whose imprinting didn`t gell around their godthingy-but their societiy`s operant conditioning still persists.

I'm curious about your take on atheism verses deism. Maybe you could make a video on it. Anyway, good vid!
gustjorodedheo 1 year ago
@gustjorodedheo I think sometime deism is a transitional phase toward atheism.
First people realize it's impossible for all these gods to be fake so they say there is only 1 god and then they say well all these religious can't be real so I'm going to just believe in God then they acknowledge I can't prove god then agnosticism and then atheism then the realization that secular humanism is the most rational and universal philosophy known to man and has more significance that any religion
jjason55740 1 year ago
@gustjorodedheo - I don't have much of a take on it - I didn't hang out as a deist any or at all in my journey, but I think it's a very reasonable and logical position to hold. Especially when we realize that yes, there *may* have been a first cause, but NO, we can't ascribe many characteristics to the first cause (including whether it still exists)
I admire much about America's founding fathers, and most of them were deists. Deism is a much better belief than theism - much harder to corrupt.

It's must easier to be an atheist in Italy, nearly all my family and friends know it now.
A fundamental Catholic client recently invited me home to dinner to meet his family even though he knows I'm an atheist.
most Catholics in Italy keep their opinions on atheists to themselves, except the pope and some radio preachers.
saintpine 1 year ago
@saintpine - that sounds very ideal! I'd love for fundamentalists around me to be so open. If they didn't feel threatened by the very existence of people with other beliefs, we could have a much more peaceful and pluralistic society!
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction

Of course I'm an opinionated Gunny that loves debate, but there are surprisingly large numbers of enlightened minds in the Marines.
thx for the vids btw

@SecularZone - I'd love to hear more about the camaraderie and interaction among military personnel... There must be respect and trust, and beliefs must be an important arena to either settle or ignore. Like sexuality, perhaps?

Why do you assume that the United States of America is not an acting fiscal theocracy, under the direction of the Dominion? Please don't answer "by the rule of law", or "the U.S. Constitution". There are probably better answers than citing quill and parchment fantasies, if you can provide any.
DonQuixotedeKaw 1 year ago
@DonQuixotedeKaw - I assume the US isn't a theocracy because we have many laws which have nothing to do with the dominant theism, and some which contradict it.
What do you mean by 'the Dominion?'
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
Echoed.
limegreensquid 1 year ago
@limegreensquid - what does 'echoed' mean in this context?
ReligiousFiction 1 year ago
@ReligiousFiction Oh, that you've pretty much explained my exact thoughts on the subject, and any comment i make would be just a re-telling of the same things, haha. So i echo it back to you.

im a 4th generation atheist living in Denmark, and yes. atheism is the majority "faith". we have universal healthcare, free religion, free speech above all(proof: muhammed crisis). a repuplican would go nuts here :-). oh yeah, and we are in the top 10 most intelligent countries in the world. Beat that.... :-)
Multimorten 1 year ago
I have the same exact concerns as you on the issue of my Atheism being prominently known, most especially in relation to Theists in my workplace. The leader of my organization in an overt Christian, I do not know for certain, but I strongly suspect that if my overt Atheism were known to this leader, promotions might be withheld. I do know for certain that the level of respect I would receive at work would be significantly diminished were my Atheism to be advertised.

@1RationalMind,
"...but I strongly suspect that if my overt Atheism were known to this leader, promotions might be withheld."
Ah, that's so sad! For you! XD
rebelq1 1 year ago
@rebelq1 Yeah, it is kinda sad kiddo! Thanks for caring! :) But, on the "upside"- I have the respect of friends (oh, including FEMALE friends too, you know- that type of person you despise). Oh- and I have love too- love I've earned by being a man of character, intelligence and compassion. Has your hatred, pettiness and childishness earned you these things? Let me guess... they have not- am I right?
1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
Hmm, when did I say that I despise them?
rebelq1 1 year ago
@rebelq1 Granted, you did not use the word "despise", but your highly derogatory comments regarding women on my "Tagged" vid make it clear to anyone of reasonable intellect that you have little respect for women. You despise Jews too, apparently, according to a comment of yours I happened upon a few days ago. You are an ignorant, petty little bigot. Bigots almost always truly feel inferior, deep inside, and they attempt to make themselves seem "better" by putting others down. You are pitiable.
1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
My derogatory comments?
rebelq1 1 year ago
@rebelq1 Review my "Tagged" vid Undercover343, if you have forgotten. I will not repeat your hateful sentiments here, they are vile and unworthy of restatement. While I have your attention again, allow me to restate a sentiment worth repeating- you are a pitiable soul, and you have earned the full depth of my pity. I offer you a suggestion- let go of your irrational hate, it does not serve you well. The longer you keep it, the longer you will remain pitiable.
1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
What does undercover343 have to do with me?
His language was a little strong but he's right about abortion requiring the approval of the biological father, aka the consent of both parents!
rebelq1 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
And is that your tactic? Calling everyone childish who doesn't agree with you?
Ahhh hahahahaha!
rebelq1 1 year ago
@rebelq1 I call you childish, not because you disagree with me, but because you rant on with petty name calling like a little boy trying to be a bully on the playground. You cannot debate in a adult fashion. If you want respect, you must earn it. In a public forum of discussion such as YT, the primary action that will earn you that respect is civility. You have a serious lack of civility. Don't expect people to be nice to you when you're an ass.
1RationalMind 1 year ago
1RationalMind, you are a stomach-churning imbecile! 'The ASSHOLE on your back'
Now surely you don't hate being male that much do you?
That isn't "her body" she's carrying, that's HIS CHILD and he has every right in the world to force her into carrying it until it gets born if he wants it!
Men aren't sperm backs to inseminate something and then be told 'you don't have any rights to the child'!
rationalway 1 year ago
@rationalway You are irrational, and your username is a gross misnomer- these are simple facts. I'm happy to "churn your stomach" actually, thanks for letting me know I do so- you have brought some pleasure to my day. I see you as an angry little child, and I weigh your opinions with that assessment in mind. Here's a clue- don't have sex with a woman who doesn't consider your input on a possible child important. You Socialists want mommy government to handle everything, because YOU can't do it.
1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind, Actually libertarian losers like you who think that small near anarchist governments are going to last are childish, ignorant and foolish!
I wonder how hard can it be to take down one of your fantasy governments with a coup?
rationalway 1 year ago
@1RationalMind, YOUR username is mask designed to hide the face of a slow-minded hypocrite! You are rational the same why that North Korea is a democratic people's republic!
rationalway 1 year ago
@rationalway I have conveyed to you my opinion on your childish nature- you are fully aware of it. That is sufficient for me. Further interaction with a child-like mind such as yours is sure to be a waste of time. I have nothing to learn from you, you are of no value to me at all. I blocked you on YT a long time ago for childish behavior. Now, I disregard you as a pathetic being unworthy of even a second of my time. You will be completely ignored from this point on. Rant away if you wish.
1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
BTW, a embryo/fetus isn't a possession, you ignorant, labelling, childish, slow-minded fool! And just like you said, sometime in the future science might allow males to carry the child so she doesn't have to worry about being forced to carry it anymore!
rationalway 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
And if that 'you socialists' includes me too, then no. I'm not a socialist. My policies are quite libertarian!

1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind,
And what kind of an argument is that, anyway?
'The man gives the woman sperm, she's in possession of it' ?
rationalway 1 year ago
@rationalway It is a rational argument, & I am not surprised you are incapable of recognizing it. You want your Nanny State to protect you because the truth is you are too scared to face the harsh realities of life. You want your Nanny to point a gun at those who don't agree with your childish desires & force them to do what you want. You setup sockpuppet accounts and rant childish ignorance. You have earned my deepest pity- you are supremely pathetic. You are not a man, you are a little child.
1RationalMind 1 year ago
@1RationalMind, when you start acting like a person who values equal rights for men you MIGHT just be considered an adult male or female whatever you are!
rationalway 1 year ago
@1RationalMind That embryo/fetus is half her DNA and half his DNA! It's not her sole decision to make!

@1RationalMind,
