The 80's were an incredibly inventive, playful and varied time for popular music. It is a mistake to think that it was all wonderful. There was a lot of dross, and rubbish too. I think your expectations of music are a little high. There never is, or has been just one 'scene'. That is it's strength, not it's weakness.
