I think they classify this an IFV bc of the combat role it was forced to play in Iraq and Afghanistan and the offensive modifications its had since 2001, not to mention how many battles it's been involved in. I don't personally believe it to be a true IFV bc it isn't outfitted with any real protective armor and has a small carry capacity (and shouldn't be on the list), but it can deliver serious direct or supporting firepower when fitted with the proper weapon like a minigun (like any vehicle)
GUYS, an IFV is "a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide fire support for them." A Humvee was added to the list because it DOES have armour, CAN transport infantry, and CAN support infantry with the mounted weapon on top of the Humvee. Tsk tsk tsk.
...These kits provided enhanced protection for the vehicle underbody, sides and fuel tank, doors, and top. Upgraded gunners stations, such as the Objective Gunner Protection Kit, could be fitted. The vehicles could also be fitted with other countermine/counter-IED devices such as the Self-Protection Adaptive Roller Kit and the Rhino passive anti-IED device. M1114 HMMWVs fell under the US Army's Level I armor protection category.
M1114 = Up "Armored" Armament HMMWV= "Armored" Car,
The vehicles were equipped with additional armor both on the sides and underneath to protect the crew from small arms ammunition and mines. M1109, the M1114 was an Up-Armored HMMWV that provided ballistic, artillery, and mine blast protection to the vehicle occupants. The M1114 had an armor kit as standard, but could also be refitted with the various Fragmentary Armor Kits (Frag Kits) developed.

@JimmyG228 no my friend your wrong. We have an American version of this show. And lots of the vehicles listed was in WWII and was made by the Germans. and the top was the M113 because of its numbers and how long its still being used. Trust me I've seen our version of it.
But I do get what your saying who ever made this is a dumbass. The the Humvee is not even a IFV. And the Armour is not Classified. you can read what armor it has on Wikipedia for fuck sake.
@packstack15 When talking about greatest ever, it should be tank to tank, rifle to rifle or vehicle to vehicle. So numbers have nothing to do with its greatness. The M113 is crap next to nearly all on this list on a one to one bases. Also the fact its still being used can only be held as a supporting fact, not as an example of it's greatness. This show is US propaganda cuz many things on this list that are American shouldn't even be near the top ten list & it was produced by an American company.

The Germans even called it the Tommy Cooker cuz it was easy to take out. 1 Sherman against Panzer 4 would have little hope of winning. That makes it a shitty tank.
Good point about someone else could have made this show. However I remember seeing at the end of the show American production compays all over the credits. That makes it American...
@packstack15 ... propaganda, because how else do you explain American things like the M1 on the list for top rifle but the HKG3's not even on the list. The G3 was 1 of the best rifle ever, all experts knows that. The M1 was good but not good enough to even be on the top ten list. Or on top ten greatest tanks the very shitty T-34 was number 1 & the M1A1 Abrams was number 2. How can that be true when most experts consider the Leopard 2 to be the hands down best ever & its not even on the list.
@JimmyG228 Dude, what the hell, T-34 wasn't shitty. It was revolutionary in a sense. It impacted greatly WWII and tank design in general. It is still used in some countries! (sic!). But I agree that this show is US or at least NATO centric.
@EnhancedNightmare Can you tell me what was so revolutionary about it? I know it had one of the best chassis designs of the day, but that's only half the tank.
The T-34 was so easy to take out that for every German tank lost at least four T-34s were lost. That's a horrible state that tells me very clearly the tank couldn't have been that great. At the very least shouldn't be any where near the number 1 spot. The T-34 got it's strength in numbers and that doesn't matter when rating tank to tank.
It was cheap and versatile, its sloped armor was later copied by everyone - Germans too. For every German tank tens or more were produced. Who cares if tank is superb if its just too damn expensive and hard to produce. This fact was a downfall of Germans. Tanks are not made to fight with tanks mind that.
@EnhancedNightmare I agree it sure was cheep and versatile, that was the best thing about it. The Russia's weren't the first to use sloped armour, the Germans had MBTs with sloped armour before the T-34 came out.
As I said last time, the T-34 gets its strength in numbers. When talking about the best ever tank, you need it to be a tank that can stand up well against other MBTs. Another thing, the T-34 isn't even a MBT, it's rated as a medium tank. So it shouldn't even be on a list with MBTs.
@JimmyG228 MBT concept was born long after WWII so I agree with you on this one. Was it about MBT or tanks in general? Well we could design tank so damn advanced that it would cost billions to produce one unit. Would that be best tank ever? I don't really think so. Thats also why AK-47 is better than custom built wonder weapon.
@EnhancedNightmare World experts on MBTs say the Greatest ever MBT in the world right now, that is battle proven is the Leopard 2. It's also one of the cheepest to build and the cheepest to maintain in NATO. The Leo 2 is so good it is the most popular BMT out side of the old communist block and Middle East. So no, the best ever MBT doesn't need to cost billions to be the best. By the way the term MBT is just a post WW2 term for heavy and super-heavy tanks of WW2 and before.
@EnhancedNightmare I just find it very hard to believe this show. It ignores most of the international experts who agree the Leopard 2 is the hands down best ever tank. This show ignores them to say a medium tank that was easy to take out and that has a only average main gun to be better then say a Panzer 4, King Tiger or Centurion
of the era. The so called experts this show talked to are uneducated idiots if you ask me. Heck the Leo 2 isn’t even on this show’s list. They are dumbies.
@JimmyG228 This show wasn't about MBT's but tanks in general. Leo 2 as awesome as it is (especially A6 version Oh damn) it doesn't really stand out. Its costs are average, gun doesn't stand out too. It is mobile etc. But nothing too extravagant, and this is TV show. You don't into TV by just being reliable. I found what you have, that Leo 2 i vastly underrated in western sources. I've seen and examined many tanks and Leo 2A6 made biggest impression on me. Also interior which was quite comfy.
@EnhancedNightmare The Leo 2 does have an advanced targeting system, better then the M1A1 or T-90. Its accuracy when firing the main gun at full speed is unmatched. Them Germans have always been good at building great tanks. What makes it so cheep to maintain though is it's easy to swap out parts on the battle field if need be. It is the most popular tank among developed nations for a reason. Add that with it being battle proven, you have a tank that should be in the top 5.
The armor on most up-armored HMMWVs holds up well against lateral attacks, when the blast is distributed in all different directions, but offers little protection from a mine blast below the truck, such as buried IEDs and land mines. Explosively formed penetrators (EFPs) can also defeat the armor kits, causing casualties.
After Somalia, the military recognized a need for a more protected HMMWV and AM General developed the M1114, an armored HMMWV to withstand small arms fire. Which is why they say ARMOR IS CLASSIFIED.
thanks to this invention they could fuck up a lot of jeeps in The A-team! The mobility of the humvee is low: they had to burrow belgian bombardier to operate in Kosovo because of mobility-problems
It is not an IFV. It is designed primarily for personnel and light cargo transport behind front lines, not as a front line fighting vehicle. In response to the vulnerability of HMMWVs operating in Iraq, "Up-Armor" kits were designed and installed on M998 HMMWVs.
what moron added the humvee as an ifv? It should be compared to a kubelwagen, a jeep, or a fennek. Not a bmp, or half track!
And its armor is "classified" because htey don't want to say "it's just a damn car so don't shoot at it!" uparmoring a humvee is stupid--it's a damn jeep. It'd be like if I slapped boiler plate on my honda and said "Hurr durr this is a tank now!" while hte suspension and engine cried for mercy.
We need things like bradleys, not uparmored hummers.
@redreaper2020 I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that you've never experienced a Humvee in country, or even served in the military. True, the Humvee's original purpose was not as a frontline vehicle, but, adaptability allowed it to be uparmored, and do very well against SAF, which is more or less what we find ourselves receiving in most cases. True, they do piss poor against IEDs, and other vehicles (like the Bradley, Strikers and MRAPs) do a hell of a lot better job. But, since the...
@redreaper2020 ...enemy has adapted and developed "reliable" EFPs, even the depleted uranium armor of our Abrahms are obsolete. Besides, ever ridden in a Bradley and try to take it up a mountain? It doesn't work well at all, hence the exceptional record of the Humvee. It's not the best, but, it's adaptability and proven functionality in the field makes it one of the best.
@redreaper2020 They're smart enough (Unlike you apparently) to know that an IFV is "a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide fire support for them." A Humvee DOES have armour, can transport infanty, and can support infantry with the weapon mounted ontop. Got it?
@TheMJDCProductions The humvee does NOT have armor by design, it was not designed to carry armor, it is not an IFV. If I put two guys in the bed of my pickup, and bolt on a few pieces of scrap metal, it isn't an IFV. A Dunbar is not an IFV. The humvee is a large jeep. That's it. It has had armor bolted on because we didn't have enough real APCs to fill the role, but it's still a jeep, at best an armored truck. Not in the same league as a Bradley or BMP.
@redreaper2020 true the humvee isnt a fully armoured IFV, but now on a modern battlefield tanks are becoming redundant, armour piercing and anti armour tech is widely available, what's needed are fast quiet versatile vehicles,
Tanks have an unmistakable effect on a situation. They're a shock weapon. When you want to announce your presence and show your power, you bring in a tank. The Russians have purely anti-infantry tanks now in production specifically for the purpose of urban combat.
Quiet, versatile vehicles...that's what a humvee is, by nature. It's a big 4x4.
uh...I know the Humvee is an important and iconic vehicle, but ....it's not exactly an IFV. More like a basic transport. And after installing any reliable armor kit on them, the low acceleration and speed becomes a serious liability.
the humvee isnt an IFV it a utillity vehicle but because bradleys are too heavy to fit on cargo C-17s (until the navy gets them to shore) the humvee was taken out of storage and used to fight directly. the humvee is used to transport engineers to service down vehicles in combat, be a medical transport and deliver food and ammo to the front line. it also takes recon units into the feild, but an IFV? its not even under that catigory, its a utillities vehicle.
The Australian bushmaster craps all over the humvee. At least it can protect its passengers from roadside bombs. Certainly wouldnt want to be in a humvee over in the middle east.
you can shoot this thing with a dang grenade launcher and it go boom and i think that the humvee's engine is weak and under powered compared to a bradly and stryker vehicle
Well this is an american show, what can you except? i think Turkish otokar cobra would be better then this one, of course its not american but still...
after useing one of these when deployed ( twice) I know from experiance that they are: 1. WAY underpowered for the weight they have ( 14,000lbs after combat load added ) 2. Dont go 120kmph .. I could barly get my m998 to go 80kmph on the german autobahn and it was the best one in the whole company. 3. They are way to small for accomidating ARMORED soldiers wearing all the crap we have to use now days when deployed. .. hard as crap to get out of the doors.
several of these were destroyed by Somalis in 1993. Those idiots can't shoot for crap and and weren't even trained, yet they could take these things out. Tell your Military to get rid of them asap before more soldiers die.
@XxMusashiYamatoxX - It's ok, it's a truck. A truck is not a IFV and it's not a tank. For what it is, it's doing a great job. It wasn't meant to take the abuse that they take. It's a TRUCK! Light recon and transport vehicle; not a tank, not a AFV. As a truck they will get you from point A to point B the same as the old Jeep or a GAZ truck. The engines are simple and somewhat reliable. They are durable enough to survive movement cross country. They are exceptionally versatile.
There's only one reason the Humvee's armor is classified : If they would reveal what kind of armor it has the enemy will soon know how to destroy it effectively
@glynhoyland The armor on most up-armored HMMWVs holds up well against lateral attacks, when the blast is distributed in all different directions, but offers little protection from a mine blast below the truck, such as buried IEDs and land mines. Explosively formed penetrators (EFPs) can also defeat the armor kits, causing casualties.
not heavily armored no but it does ok against small arms it's supposed to be fast reliable and rugged and it is but as for belonging in a "top fighting vehicle" i don't know. If they put other stuff like Bren carrier I don't see why not.
they were planning to go in and out of iraq in less than 6 months so they brought humvees instead of armored carriers. at the end of the day it's a random list made by a tv program who cares about this
The title of the show is "Infantry Fighting Vehicles" not armored vehicles, they carry troops thats there main function. Added armor even bolted on is as good as any other troop carriers. All of these will get destroyed from rpg's.
and then i can tell you the truth that US soldiers kills iraqi resistance by the dozens everyday, and has already infact completed the mission in Iraq.
do you mean iraqi children, women and old folks?? poor poor iraqi civilians got caught in the middle of fire fight pfft yeah right.. when a humvee got blown up to the sky high the yanks always in trigger happy mode shoot everything as long it moves.. what a dick ! kill innocent and wasting precious ammos..
ooo sorry yet again wrong. As im sure youve seen IEDs detonated and suicide bombings, that insurgents and terrorists detonate indiscriminately among the civilian population. that causes civilians casualties 10x more likely than the US.
so in the end you admit it do you that some of yanks soldier are trigger happy....indiscrimate bombing?? mmmm the notorious alCIAda or private armies??? these thugs are part of grand strategy of pentagon...detonate some IEDs at the crowded open market full of innocent civilians...and blame it to the iraqi fighters or make a silly claim that alCIAda/alMOSSADa has done the shit...sooo predictable...everyone knows this shit man..and we are not buying it anymore!!!
nice try on putting words in my mouth but you fail yet again the US gains nothing from killing civilans as you just said was the "pentagons grand strategy" your just and idiot.
The HumVee absolutely doesnt belong in this list, else you will have to add Toyota Pickups, too, which seriously beat it at service length and even reliability
@ Stritchers So then by your logic the Sherman Tank should be on this list? or the Stuka Dive Bomber? They are vehicles which have been used to fight infantry, so according to you that makes them IFV's? Wrong, An IFV is a class of vehicle which can transport fewer troops than APC's but can provide significant fire support for them, provide improved armour and usually firing ports for the embarked force.
The Title says "Top Ten Infantry Fighting Vehicle" an APC is not an Infantry Fighting Vehicle, an APC is used to carry troops in a protected vehicle, an Infantry Fighting Vehicle is used to carry troops in a protected vehicle and to provide fire support and evac if required, there two completely different vehicles. There just wasn't enough good American ones so they decided to ignore that.
Yea I know but the name of the show is just "Top 10 fighting vehicles" he added infantry on there.
Technically you could call all IFV an APC. They're just more armored and have more firepower, they developed from the armored personnel concept. Still, all are fighting vehicles.
Wasn't enough good American ones? The only American one on here that's not an IFV is the hummer.. could use the same argument for Brits lol since the Universal carrier is on here..
An IFV is any vehicle used to fight with infantry forces. That fact is that most APCs have been used not just as battle taxis but as improvised armoured combat vehicles. As soon as you fit a weapon system of any kind on the thing, it stops being a mere APC and becomes an IFV.
Armour - classified. Yeah right... since when no armour is classified... Oh, I forgot. Discovery Channels beleives that protection is not important for APC, so they didn't included it as criteria for comparison.
i am an american and i don't agree with this thing being on the list

It's also one of the cheepest to build and the cheepest to maintain in NATO. The Leo 2 is so good it is the most popular BMT out side of the old communist block and Middle East. So no, the best ever MBT doesn't need to cost billions to be the best. By the way the term MBT is just a post WW2 term for heavy and super-heavy tanks of WW2 and before.
JimmyG228 9 months ago
@EnhancedNightmare I just find it very hard to believe this show. It ignores most of the international experts who agree the Leopard 2 is the hands down best ever tank. This show ignores them to say a medium tank that was easy to take out and that has a only average main gun to be better then say a Panzer 4, King Tiger or Centurion
of the era. The so called experts this show talked to are uneducated idiots if you ask me. Heck the Leo 2 isn’t even on this show’s list. They are dumbies.
JimmyG228 9 months ago
@JimmyG228 This show wasn't about MBT's but tanks in general. Leo 2 as awesome as it is (especially A6 version Oh damn) it doesn't really stand out. Its costs are average, gun doesn't stand out too. It is mobile etc. But nothing too extravagant, and this is TV show. You don't into TV by just being reliable. I found what you have, that Leo 2 i vastly underrated in western sources. I've seen and examined many tanks and Leo 2A6 made biggest impression on me. Also interior which was quite comfy.
EnhancedNightmare 9 months ago

NatedogJr 1 year ago
After Somalia, the military recognized a need for a more protected HMMWV and AM General developed the M1114, an armored HMMWV to withstand small arms fire. Which is why they say ARMOR IS CLASSIFIED.
NatedogJr 1 year ago
thanks to this invention they could fuck up a lot of jeeps in The A-team! The mobility of the humvee is low: they had to burrow belgian bombardier to operate in Kosovo because of mobility-problems
smig0497 1 year ago
High mobility? they had burrow belgian bombardiers to operate in Kosovo...
smig0497 1 year ago
It is not an IFV. It is designed primarily for personnel and light cargo transport behind front lines, not as a front line fighting vehicle. In response to the vulnerability of HMMWVs operating in Iraq, "Up-Armor" kits were designed and installed on M998 HMMWVs.
NatedogJr 1 year ago
what moron added the humvee as an ifv? It should be compared to a kubelwagen, a jeep, or a fennek. Not a bmp, or half track!
And its armor is "classified" because htey don't want to say "it's just a damn car so don't shoot at it!" uparmoring a humvee is stupid--it's a damn jeep. It'd be like if I slapped boiler plate on my honda and said "Hurr durr this is a tank now!" while hte suspension and engine cried for mercy.
We need things like bradleys, not uparmored hummers.

@redreaper2020 no there r humvee in service right now using a variant of tanks' reactive armor
and its called a fighting vehicle not car
so any vehicle used in mass with infantry as a support or combat is considered an IFV

TheArmydude050290 1 year ago
@redreaper2020 ...enemy has adapted and developed "reliable" EFPs, even the depleted uranium armor of our Abrahms are obsolete. Besides, ever ridden in a Bradley and try to take it up a mountain? It doesn't work well at all, hence the exceptional record of the Humvee. It's not the best, but, it's adaptability and proven functionality in the field makes it one of the best.

@redreaper2020 An IFV is "a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide fire support for them"
It DOES have armour and can transport infantry while giving support to them with its arnament, like an M2 Browning or a TOW. Got it?
TheMJDCProductions 2 months ago in playlist Top Ten Infantry Fighting Vehicles
@redreaper2020 They're smart enough (Unlike you apparently) to know that an IFV is "a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide fire support for them." A Humvee DOES have armour, can transport infanty, and can support infantry with the weapon mounted ontop. Got it?
TheMJDCProductions 2 months ago in playlist Top Ten Infantry Fighting Vehicles
@TheMJDCProductions The humvee does NOT have armor by design, it was not designed to carry armor, it is not an IFV. If I put two guys in the bed of my pickup, and bolt on a few pieces of scrap metal, it isn't an IFV. A Dunbar is not an IFV. The humvee is a large jeep. That's it. It has had armor bolted on because we didn't have enough real APCs to fill the role, but it's still a jeep, at best an armored truck. Not in the same league as a Bradley or BMP.
redreaper2020 2 months ago
@redreaper2020 true the humvee isnt a fully armoured IFV, but now on a modern battlefield tanks are becoming redundant, armour piercing and anti armour tech is widely available, what's needed are fast quiet versatile vehicles,
vamparik 1 month ago
@vamparik "tanks are becoming redundant"?
It's a big 4x4.
redreaper2020 1 month ago
Their point is that it is being used at a IFV. Regardless of what it was meant for.
ataraxic89 1 year ago
It's used because it's cheap.
OilmanW84 1 year ago
uh...I know the Humvee is an important and iconic vehicle, but ....it's not exactly an IFV.

They are way to small for accomidating ARMORED soldiers wearing all the crap we have to use now days when deployed. .. hard as crap to get out of the doors.

MrPew17 1 year ago
@XxMusashiYamatoxX - It's ok, it's a truck. A truck is not a IFV and it's not a tank. For what it is, it's doing a great job. It wasn't meant to take the abuse that they take. It's a TRUCK! Light recon and transport vehicle; not a tank, not a AFV. As a truck they will get you from point A to point B the same as the old Jeep or a GAZ truck. The engines are simple and somewhat reliable. They are durable enough to survive movement cross country. They are exceptionally versatile.

TowerHamletsNeil 2 years ago
Old news... i hate people that try to act smart by writing basic info.... your lame
dutchforces 2 years ago
The Title says "Top Ten Infantry Fighting Vehicle" an APC is not an Infantry Fighting Vehicle, an APC is used to carry troops in a protected vehicle, an Infantry Fighting Vehicle is used to carry troops in a protected vehicle and to provide fire support and evac if required, there two completely different vehicles. There just wasn't enough good American ones so they decided to ignore that.
TowerHamletsNeil 2 years ago
Yea I know but the name of the show is just "Top 10 fighting vehicles" he added infantry on there.
Technically you could call all IFV an APC. They're just more armored and have more firepower, they developed from the armored personnel concept. Still, all are fighting vehicles.
Wasn't enough good American ones? The only American one on here that's not an IFV is the hummer.. could use the same argument for Brits lol since the Universal carrier is on here..
OlderG0ds 2 years ago
And the Humvee 1025 is just a Troop Transport, not even an Armored vehicle
Kriegerdammerung 2 years ago
An IFV is any vehicle used to fight with infantry forces. That fact is that most APCs have been used not just as battle taxis but as improvised armoured combat vehicles. As soon as you fit a weapon system of any kind on the thing, it stops being a mere APC and becomes an IFV.
Stritchers 2 years ago
Armour - classified. Yeah right... since when no armour is classified... Oh, I forgot. Discovery Channels beleives that protection is not important for APC, so they didn't included it as criteria for comparison.
BitnikGr 2 years ago 2
The Humvee isn't a IFV neither is the number one on this list.. its an APC..
TowerHamletsNeil 2 years ago 3
The show is top 10 fighting vehicles, it's not limited to IFVs, if there's a weapon on it and used for military I guess they can use it.
