On one tube inside the jar, about 2 cm. from the cap, must be practiced a little hole that must not be covered by alcohol. Without this hole, while working, the stove, from the central nozzle, not shoot off steam, but liquid inflamed alcohol. Very dangerous. With a small hole (2 mm.) on the tube, come out only alcohol vapour. OK? ;-)
Interesting solution with this hole on tube beneath the lid. However I haven't made them. Ones I made similar holes on both tubes, but then jet flame was gone. But what was the tube size you made hole on? I had similar situation with fuel fountain out of jet with 6mm tube burner. Now I will try to play with wick size and maybe with hole like you did.

In fact, I found this hole required only in copper pipe of 6 mm.
In the tube of 10 mm, the phenomenon is very small.
