I'm working on this modification and it's a great aircraft. I wouldn't be biased to either Boeing or airbus, it serves it's role well depending on the customers specifications. I only want to say that the decision to buy the boeing tanker was from a political point of view, not military nor pragmatic. Worst plane, only a bit cheaper, but... it doesnt exist. May i ask when it should replace the KC135? <I have to say also that the dreamliner isnt in service though. The truth is that boeing hasnt done a good plane since de 777, more than thirty years ago. The Boeing option was cheapened up a bit - e.g. no winglets and it is a bit less capable but a bit cheaper upfront. Airbus forced Boeing to compete on price and I think that is good for the US taxpayer. Rather than strutting around being arrogant, lets remember that it would be bad if there weren't two capable companies out there fighting each other.
As for people in the UK, we can be pleased that the refuelling systems (drogue a least) on both are designed (don't know about manufacture) here.
If I was an American: I give thumbs up to the USAF on choosing the A330MRTT rather than the 767 tanker because it really fits their needs. SO WHAT? I'M STILL AMERICAN!

New fuel efficient KC-767 has offense/defense ability + will surpass, out-class + out-fly any plane made by Airbus!
@zapster53 the main thing I wanted to mention was the wing however (sure you've noticed it in person, especially as an engineer) and it's a thing of beauty; remains the highest aspect ratio commercial wing in production (lotto: you Brits designed it for them!) and features variable camber architecture that computers modify based on load/speed etc. Also the 330/340 share the wing design; tanker uses the 340's outboard engine pylon location as booms mounts, very light w/ little mod. required.

@EstorilEm That's the difference in EADS vs. Boeing control philosophy. EADS A/C allow the pilot to suggest manuevers to the computer and it decides if it will do them or not. Boeing does not restrict the pilots options like that, but does incorporate many warning systems to let the pilot know if a limit is being breeched. Which is better? That's not an easy answer. Each approach has it's pros and cons. As a pilot, I like the Boeing approach better.

Oh well, hopefully 787 avionics can get certified and we can get some tankers in the air regardless. The future KC-Y (KC-10 replacement) program looks much better for the MRTT

You know nothing about aircraft or their performance history, or the fact that we export more than twice as many military aircraft as we support internationally with imports. Boeing makes a fine plane, but it won't ALWAYS have the best solution, which it doesn't in this case
@EstorilEm Did I say it was the best because it's American? Uhm. No. It's the best because it is the right size A/C for the mission specified. The A330 is too big. Tanker ops is all about booms in the air. You must deploy the aircraft at forward bases. The size of the A330 limits the number of A/C you can park on the tarmac which limits the number of booms you can fly.
The A330 burms more fuel and is more expensive to operate. That's why the KC-46A is the better aircraft.
@EstorilEm Are you aware that the cockpit will have the 787 avionics modified for military use? That's state-of-the-art my friend. The boom operator no longer will lie on his belly and look thru a small window in the tail of the airplane. He's sitting is a comfy chair in the front now. Again, it's state-of-the-art tech.
There's nothing "old" about the KC-46A. Many updates and improvements on the original design. It's still fuel efficient and is the right size for the mission.

I could throw a high-res full color dash cluster from a new range rover in a 1972 ford pinto, but it's not going to enhance its' capabilities. The 787 system WILL enhance situational awareness and crew function, but does NOTHING to improve the flight characteristics/performance of the aircraft. The 767 is a good plane, but it's an OLD (already) and the money could be better spent.

That will not happen again cuz Boeing has legal Exclusivity Contract for GE-C90 & GE-NexGen engines. Exactly what flight characteristics does the A330 have that the 767 lacks? Rate of climb? Sustained g's in turns? Airspeed? You paint with a broad brush when you imply the 767 is inferior in performance. Be specific.

@zapster53 First of all, it wasn't a simple "oops, we messed up the process" - if you do some research, you'd learn about the Boeing corruption scandal 7 years ago when the contract was first pulled-no tin hat needed. They had also lost the JSF program and there were many rumors that lawmakers would "make it right" for them in the KC-X program. An evaluation covers hundreds of design criteria, there isn't a single "oops" and USAF was stated calling the EADS design "clearly the better performer".

On another note, I wasn't aware that the Mobile, AL plant would support ALL commercial production of the A330 Freighter which would be huge for additional jobs in the US (in addition to MRTT contract jobs) plus $600M in facilities there and tens of thousands of jobs. 12 cargo aircraft were already slated to be built there. Oh well, hopefully 787 avionics can get certified and we can get some tankers in the air regardless. The future KC-Y (KC-10 replacement) program looks much better for the MRTT

ANYTHING 767-based is old. 4 decades old by the estimated delivery date to USA. Screw that? We're buying dinosaurs to replace dinosaurs. EADS already won the bid, Boeing bribed the govt, used cheap advertising to sway public to do "American thing", and won with far inferior aircraft.

You know nothing about aircraft or their performance history, or the fact that we export more than twice as many military aircraft as we support internationally with imports. Boeing makes a fine plane, but it won't ALWAYS have the best solution, which it doesn't in this case

@EstorilEm Did I say it was the best because it's American? Uhm. No. It's the best because it is the right size A/C for the mission specified. The A330 is too big. Tanker ops is all about booms in the air. You must deploy the aircraft at forward bases. The size of the A330 limits the number of A/C you can park on the tarmac which limits the number of booms you can fly.
The A330 burms more fuel and is more expensive to operate. That's why the KC-46A is the better aircraft.

@EstorilEm Are you aware that the cockpit will have the 787 avionics modified for military use? That's state-of-the-art my friend. The boom operator no longer will lie on his belly and look thru a small window in the tail of the airplane. He's sitting is a comfy chair in the front now. Again, it's state-of-the-art tech.
There's nothing "old" about the KC-46A. Many updates and improvements on the original design. It's still fuel efficient and is the right size for the mission.

@zapster53 Okay, are you a pilot? I'm fully aware how avionics work and their role in the KC-46. I could throw a high-res full color dash cluster from a new range rover in a 1972 ford pinto, but it's not going to enhance its' capabilities. The 787 system WILL enhance situational awareness and crew function, but does NOTHING to improve the flight characteristics/performance of the aircraft. The 767 is a good plane, but it's an OLD (already) and the money could be better spent.

@LottoWinner999 Gas guzzling A330? Admittedly the A330 uses, on average, 6 more litres per nm flown but it is significantly larger. An interesting fact is the A350-800 is more fuel efficient (per nm) than the smaller 787-800.

Negative poltical publicity + media attacks upon Boeing by Airbus made sure EADS will never manufacture USAF airplanes. With Boeing, Lockheed, GE, P&W + USA manufacturers we do not need or want U. New fuel efficient KC-767 has offense/defense ability + will surpass, out-class + out-fly any plane made by Airbus!

In 1980 AB bought off the rack Pratt Whitney jet engines that Boeing paid 500 Million USD to develop. That will not happen again cuz Boeing has legal Exclusivity Contract for GE-C90 & GE-NexGen engines. Airbus success was do to the fact of legal-loophole were AB pirated enignes that Boeing paid P&W to develop. AB Sucks!

Now RR is going to charge Airbus a billion euros to design a new engine cuz Trent does not have the thrust for the two bigger A350s. @EstorilEm Yes I'm a pilot and an aircraft engineer so I'm intimately aware of the issues on both the design and flight sides of the equation. Old does not equal bad as you are implying. Incremental improvements over the 767 models have made them better over time.
Exactly what flight characteristics does the A330 have that the 767 lacks? Rate of climb? Sustained g's in turns? Airspeed? You paint with a broad brush when you imply the 767 is inferior in performance. Be specific.

@zapster53 First of all, it wasn't a simple "oops, we messed up the process" - if you do some research, you'd learn about the Boeing corruption scandal 7 years ago when the contract was first pulled-no tin hat needed. They had also lost the JSF program and there were many rumors that lawmakers would "make it right" for them in the KC-X program. An evaluation covers hundreds of design criteria, there isn't a single "oops" and USAF was stated calling the EADS design "clearly the better performer".

The A330 demonstrates far greater efficiency than any competing model Boeing had at the time, and is a beautiful aircraft to boot ;)
