The lighting model saves this game. Very good lighting. Otherwise it is not that great visually. Not compared to something like The Witcher 2. No doubt they are working on a smaller budget, too.

I see that they still employ terrible animators.

The Gothic games were always a mess and they always had terrible combat... The only Gothic title that even resembled a half way decent game ( although linear ) was Gothic 4 and it was made by Spellbound not PB.

I am more interested in seeing where Spellbound goes with the next Gothic title than another bug ridden mess from PB because Spellbound actually got theseries back on track as far as playability is concerned.

@jcodbf2 I haven't played Risen oder ArcaniA, yet. But Gothic 1 and especially 2 were the most emersive RPG games I have ever played. They looked pretty bad and they ran slowly on the hardware at the time, but the world was just very fluid and believeable. The characters were rugged and had flaws, you were just a guy who started with nothing and was abused by the higher ups. And it also created a cruel world were even a small fly can kill you in the first levels.

So that's my opinion; I was also surprised when I played it for the first time. But with the community patch the most bugs are gone and you have to arrange with the rest.

i don't think this will even be better than risen 1..... i liked the whole 'work your way up the monastry' and a bit of choice to what you want to be like joining the rogues but in Risen 2 they got rid of bow and arrows and no matter what you have to be a pirate...... since i'm mostly a mage sort of character i don't think the storyline will suit what i want to do but i'll have to see :/

Very unfortunate that the Gothic series was never really popular outside of Germany.

Gothic 1 was more or less released at the same time as Morrowind - while the Gothic series always featured realism full voiced dialogue and a world to immerse into as a stark contrast there was Morrowind with a fantasy world, and a "complex" character development.

And today Skyrim is what Gothic already was 10 years ago... Since they adapted the realism, and additonally added a bit of dullness in TES4 and 5.

@xSakijix You seem to forget that Bethesda created TES games before Morrowind.. The TES games before Morrowind dwarfed both the Gothic series and recent TES games. And people chose TES over Gothic because Gothic suffered one of the worst combat system ever to grace an RPG where you can either stun lock enemies or they would stun lock you. The Gothic games also have zero character to them.

I can't say that it was really pleasing to attack enemies in Morrowind while in G1 this system allowed you to actually controll the movement of the blade and at the same time like IRL the character couldn't fight several enemies at once. I believe it only made the game more realistic.
