I have an old VCR tape of Grace Slick giving her account of this. Drugs, she said, were legal in Amsterdam, and fans were just handing the band all kinds of stuff. She said everyone took a little to be polite and saved the rest for later...except Jim. Yep, all of it...the second he received it. You gotta hand it to Ray. This is the first time I've heard this version and I think he nailed it pretty close...and he wasn't expecting to have to do it at all!
In one of the Jim Morrison biographies, they explain how Jim got so wasted prior to the concert, and that the other band members were so pissed at him that they decided to perform as a trio.
@RayManzarekGod Yeah, I can play both of these songs alright, no where near as good as Ray yet, but good enough to get by, and I've tried singing while playing and I just mess up repeatedly.
@MeanObiwan Exact same here... If I take out the bass, I can sing and play just fine... I used to beat the hell outta myself for not being able to do all three, but you have to take in that Rays been playing piano since age 10 (I think,.... Or maybe 8) and he is 28 or 29 here... So thats 20 years about of experience... I've only been playing for 2.
@RayManzarekGod The only song I can sing and play at the same time is Backdoor Man, but I can't get into it, I gotta be very careful or I'll mess up. Any other song I mess up my playing. I don't even think I have been playing a full year, close to it though.
@MeanObiwan Very cool.... Backdoor Man is a great song... If you just keep on practicing you'll get it all down within time! I suggest studying classical pieces, those can really help moving both hands differently.
@surfraptor Ah thats crazy! Yeah. I heard he collapsed backstage... You're the second person who's told me they were there... I didn't think I'd be able to find anyone who was there!
I have a question, did they do Unknown Soldier with Robby singing? Its rumored they did. I found a bootleg of it supposdely, but it was horrible quality, and all I could make out was Ray saying "ALL OVER BABY!"
He lives a quarter of a mile from him and i drive past his house everyday on the way to school. He completely ignored me in person when i went to see him some times but he was at the library and i got to ask what his favorite song was. he said Light My Fire
@Pacificdreamgirl Wow! Amsterdam mustve been one AWESOME place in '68! Wish I was there :(, Born in the wrong era!! I shouldve been born 50 years earlier haha!! Thats lucky that you were there! It mustve been wierd!! Glad I found someone who was actually there, hey, did Robby sing at all at it?
Nope not that I remember. He came out dancing on the stage when Airplane was still playing and then passed out.
It was in the time that these kind of concerts were still given in relative small places like the Concert building instead of a mega hall so the chaos was still controllable haha but of course the audience was very disappointed.
@Pacificdreamgirl I mean Robby, the guitar player, not Jim, its rumoured that Robby sung "Unknown Soldier" but theres no bootleg of it for some reason... I love Ray, but I could imagine the audience being disappointed! No JIMBO!
ok I see, sorry, I just dont remember. I know Ray sang mostly, perhaps Robbie was doing some singing too. It's so long ago and it was so chaotic. Some people were rowdy cos they were dissapointed, others just wanted them to shut up cos they appreciated the effort from the doors to still deliver somewhat of a concert. It was just weird. People came for Jim really so a lot of pent-up energy. Also in those days many people used to get high in the toilets and hallways, it was just very unreal.
@BessieMorrison Same with me man! I saw the DVD on public television 2 years ago (Which was what got me back into The Doors) And I was like "I MUST FIND THAT CONCERT"
Just in response to one of the captions on the video, Robby isn't left handed. The negative had been flipped and it is actually a reverse of the way the photo was taken.
Can you upload that better version of this concert, please?

@RayManzarekGod...I wouldn't be surprised if both are right. Perhaps Grace didn't see him eat it.

@TDempsterDesign I have a DVD of that interview too :). Tghat is absolutely hilarious still....
I heard another story that supposedly Jim ate a huge handful of Hash before going on stage but I believe Grace's interview is more accurate.

I really gotta applaud Ray here. He's doing, bass, chords. and vocals, which is all very hard to do at the same time, as I've been learning.

After Jim passed, Ray sung tons of originals written without Jim!

Why Manzarek sang?
JonasVanRetro 8 months ago
@JonasVanRetro Hey my friend, Ray sings here because Jim had passed out prior to the show!

@kwiinzkum Hehe, that is what I have heard!! THank you! :)

@RayManzarekGod When we play, we use a 72 Twin reverb for the guitar and the same for the G101
kwiinzkum 1 year ago
@kwiinzkum I see! Today I took my Vox Continental to the music store, and tried it through a twin reverb!
RayManzarekGod 1 year ago
@RayManzarekGod Did you like it? I really love the Vox sound, but the G101 is a totoal different beast...but we use the Twin Reverb on both

@kwiinzkum Loved it... The Gibson has alot more 'power' underneath the sound I believe.
