  • The engines are killing themselves, lol!

  • What you mean?

  • They sound so loud and powerful and yet it goes very slow.

  • It would take off better if the ZF transmission was messed up (ride 7707 in the Bronx if you want to see what I mean, the power doesn't let up when shifting like the rest of the ZF CNGs, it actually gets a slight jump in speed when floored through shifting, it also bypasses it's speed limiter!)

  • Oh...so they get a speed limiter??? That sucks!

  • Alot of ZF ones are starting to ignore thier worn out speed governer (limiter), meaning more speed!

  • Aight then. I've noticed that with almost all the NYC and Westchester buses :)

  • Only the VII CNG has a speed governer lol

  • Also you should check out my VII CNG sound clips (the ones with LED has the same transmission).

  • i vote an HP590. Ive never heard of an RTS having the HP500.

  • Wait a minute. I've found out that this bus's transmission is the ZF-2HP-592C auto.

  • ZF- 2 hp 592C?.. Only 2 gears?.. no.. that isn´t true or?..

  • Well, just look at my video of the 2001's NovaBus RTS and listen to the drivetrain engine and its transmission. These transmissions are not like the allison VR731 that 1995, 1996 and 1997 NovaBus RTSs has.

  • the HP592 comes in a 5 gear form. you can order it in either a 4 gear form or a 6 gear form depending on the application. Anybody noticed that RTS has a "T" drive set up?

  • @6V92TA what RTS has a T-Drive set up????

  • Btw, in case you haven't noticed, the ZF-2HP-592C are five gears, not two.

  • But why it is named ZF 2HP??. If the Gearbox have 4 gears it is namded ZF 4 HP, 5 gears = ZF 5HP and 6 gears = ZF 6 HP..

  • ZF Ecomat-2 HP592C has 6 gears. The first and second gears are just close ratio so it's hard to notice.

  • Oh yes.. now i see.. hehe..^^.. ZF Ecomat-2 Okay.. That´s the ZF Ecomat-2 6 HP592C.. ^^.. with 6 gears..

  • It's sad that it has 6 gears but tops out at 40MPH.

  • D-DOT RTS's top out at 67mph

  • That's odd, VII CNGs got the SAME exact transmission and only does 40MPH (unless the speed limiter is bypassed)

  • The NYCT ZF powered RTS's can hit 55 easy. I don't why the O7's are limited to 40. But I know about the D-DOT's from personal experience.

  • You used to work for D-dot?

  • No, just had a lot of connects there.

  • @baul104 Ok I can now let the cat out the bag! I drove D-DOT's back in the day.

  • NYCT RTS ZF transmission is different from the VII CNG and the D-DOTs ZF transmission. They are not the same, and I don't know why TTMG says the ZF CNG and the ZF RTS has the same transmission in MTA, they are VERY different, ZF MTA RTS sounds like a closer ratio B400R, while the ZF VII CNG has different gearbox ratios.

  • I don't know man. I think the ZF sounds pretty much the same on the NYCT and DDOT RTS. Slightly different because the MTA is 3 years older maybe?? I ride lots of ZF powered MTA's.

  • The MTA ZF does have a rich sound that seems to be better maintained. I think they are 2 different versions too.

  • Yeah you're right, the one at MTA shifts like a high pitched B400R, this one shifts like a VII CNG, but in this video it does one of it's funny shifts exactly like a VII would in the same conditions (upshifts, downshifts, and upshifts twice).

  • We have these trannies with 6 gears!

  • So all the 1993 New Flyers are Gone? Too sad, I like those better than DLFs. Im getting too bored with New Flyer LFs here in Chicago CTA. Do you still see the Classics from Windsor in Downtown with those newer Orion VIIs?

  • Yep, all of the 1992s and 1993s New Flyer D40HF models are all gone since August of 2005. I definitely miss D-dot's D40HF buses including SMART's Gillig Phantoms. And yes, I still see some Classics, the Orion VIIs and also GM New Looks downtown Detroit when they were operating as "Tunnel Bus." However, I haven't seen Orion V buses since 2002 and 2003. And second of all, I'm also getting a bit bored with the D40LFs in my city.

  • D-DOT has 254 RTS's in total 3200-3232 were ex-Smart 1995 units. the others: 3250-3282, 3290-3299, 3500-3617, and 3800-3859 came from Nova. All have the DD/Allison combo except for 3820-3859 which are 2002 models and have the DD/ZF combo.

  • Are those 3200s and 1996-97 models RTS been rebuilt or are going to be rebuild or rehab? I love RTSes and I know that 2002 Models are going to be around longer. And I really miss those 1987/89 GM/MCI Classic buses and I guess Detroit didn't like the Nova Classics.

  • I don't think they'll be rebuilding any 1995-96-97 and 2001-02 RTSs though. I'm still disappointed that D-dot had retired all of the 6V92 powered MCI Classics, New Flyer D40HFs and Neoplan AN-460s. Btw, the GM Classics that you mentioned was owned by D-dot in 1986. I just wish D-dot could've purchased some NovaBus Classics though...

  • It is pretty odd that Transit Windsor doenst have Nova Classics either but at least they still have rebuilt MCI Classics and some of (Ex-DDOT) GM Classics. But here in Chicago (Pace) has Nova Classics and Im enjoying riding them. I grew up in Grand Rapids MI with their 1990 MCI Classics and sadly retired in 2003 over stupid Gilligs like SMARTs.

Now Im moving to Detroit to be with NOVA RTSes and Windsor's Classics. Here in Chicago (CTA) is retiring their RTSes.

  • To dmcr9525: Except for coach #3787 because it has the Allison VR-731 RH transmission; this was the only one tha had recieved the last V transmission.

  • I love that revving around the corner! It sounds the a 50 series with an Allison V731 - same as here? I'm addicted to that sound. As you may or may not know, it is "suspcious activity" in NYC to be caught with a cam aimed at buses, trains, buildings, etc. I could go on and say that I've been numerously "written up" for it. In fact, I cannot even take pictures of streets or street-signs or streetlights, trees, parks, trashbins, bus-stops or even gum on pavement w/out getting "STOP! DONT MOVE"

  • This bus has the Series 50 engine. It's just that this bus has a different transmission--possibly the ZF HP-500 or 590(I'm not sure...) Have you checked out my video of "A Ride on D-dot's NovaBus RTS" yet? Besides, it's a good thing that I live here in Detroit or I would've never record this bus. Thanks!

  • Yea, I have seen that video you mention. As I have pointed earlier, consider yourself lucky to be riding series 50 equipped RTS's!

How many RTS's does your city use?

  • My city still has a lot of them. The 1995's NovaBus RTSs(which were sold from SMART to D-dot in 1995) are still in use though, but unfortunately, some of them are bound to retire soon after 12 years. Coach#3216 was scrapped two months ago. Anyway, we still have the 1996 & 1997's RTSs, including the 2001's RTSs. We also have the 2004(#3900-3989) and 2005's(#4100-4220) New Flyer D40LF buses.

  • DDOT has 254 RTS's and buses 3829-3859 are actually 2002 RTS-8's

  • That's quite a good lot and will last for a while. The later models should be around for longer, I'm guessing. BTW, does Detroit have better roads than NYC (bumps, inconsistencies, potholes?? NYC roads sound as if they're smashing buses to pieces. lol. As for the transmission on the bus in this video, "ZF HP" or not - it sure sounds like a V731.

  • Well, it doesn't sound like the V731 or VR731 to me because they're 3 or 4 speed auto. This bus has the 5 speed auto which is the ZF 5-HP590 or 592. And also, I don't know about the road pavement because I don't pay attention to the roads though.

  • D-DOT has 254 RTS's. The rest of the active fleet are D40LF's. Ansd actually buses 3820-3859 are 2002 models.
