This is an area that I feel is just to damned dangerous to get into. I am for a strong defense but this is just to easy to be used against us. I am ok with remote control but I don't think the implications have been fully thought out. What they don't tell you is they are planning for these things to run in swarms. I don't think I would trust these things even if we could remotely destroy them.

Private defense contractors fulfill that role, but they do it for the military, and the technology trickles slowly from the defense side into the private sector. To be clear, the technology slowly moves from military application to civilian application.

i hope you realize that the military is responsible a great deal of modern day inventions and has produced the worlds leading technology. (that includes civilian tech as well, not just weapons)

MegaSuyan, this is true to a point. The military itself doesn't really make a lot of technology. Private defense contractors fulfill that role, but they do it for the military, and the technology trickles slowly from the defense side into the private sector. To be clear, the technology slowly moves from military application to civilian application.
Still hoping to have a night vision HUD in my car sometime soon so I can see beyond my headlights.

scouting, transport, air superiority, multirole, strike capability, ground support, light precision bombing, heavy bombing, tracking, etc etc.
UAVs and UCAVs are beginning to fill these roles.
Global hawk for scouting and tracking
Predator for scouting, tracking, and light precision ground support
Fire hawk for scouting, stationary flight, tracking, and light precision ground support
X-47 for autonomous light bombing
etc.

Mostly they're all supposed to do different jobs required by the 2 roles of "attack and recon" like, deep air space penetration, long endurance penetration and attack run, oh, and full out beat the poop out of people missions. But that kind of aircraft is commonly refered to as a "turkey"
It is not great at any purpose.
F-15/F-22/F-14 will defeat F-16/F-18/F-35 any day in air to air combat, but the other is true for ground support.
However, B-52, B-2, Ah-64, A-10, Ah-1 are much better for ground support than any of the above.
you can never be the best at everything, thats why it is a bad idea to generalize, unless u r on a budget.
