no..they should allow cross country as a winter sport to bring in poor nations that cant afford to go to the games. African nations in particular..plus it can help athletes prep for other games
Damn, they started quickly, their legs were a blur... makes me wish i could do better at xc meets but whenever I start with sprinting im dead rest of the race
@rutabega234 exactly...as much as I would like to see xc as an olympic event, it would take away from track...my guess is that the best talent would stick with track and olmpic xc would just be dominated by random kenyans who weren't good enough to make it in a track event
@xMaKaVELii 'Weren't good enough to make it in a track event." That's because Kenya and Ethiopia have so many talented runners and you can only take so many. Some of them are actually better runners out on the field than they are on the track. My brother was one such runner. Plus, the distance events in track are still dominated by Kenyans anyway.
@crosscountrytc That's my point though...olympic XC would be even more dominated by Kenya and Ethiopia than track is...Other countries have a hard enough time finding 2-3 world class athletes for distance events as it is, adding xc would only significantly increase East African dominance in distance running..no other countries could provide even a slight amount of competition to Kenya and Ethiopia in xc, the slim number of elite distance runners other countries do have would still focus on track
cross country isnt contested at the olympic level because it's too hard to standardize...the difference in courses and terrain make objectively comparing people difficult. how would you determine an A-standard for cross country?
The guy in the yellow shirt at 39 seconds probably bragged to his friends that he was in front of Pre at the 3 mile mark, but when his friends asked him how the rest of the race went, he probably changed the subject.
@cicirunner That was Gary Bjorklund who's times in high school were actually faster then Pre's. Don't dis him because he was one of the greatest US runners of all time just like Prefontaine.
@seemeinHD No, the roads are quite different to the grass, mud, and rocks that make up a cross country event. It's like comparing mountain bikers to road cyclists: very different bikes and abilities required to excel at either one. Plus, cross country pits athletes that specialize in events from the 1500m to the marathon- the strongest man wins. Track = speed, XC = strength, roads/ marathon = endurance.
@seemeinHD not at all, xc is run on a course with terrain like mud, rocks, grass, concrete, mountains, hills, streams, etc, mrathoning is just road racing, not saying it isn't hard but yeah theres a big diffrence
I read an article many years ago about the 1924 Olympic Cross Country running race, the last time it was an Olympic event. The great Paavo Nurmi won nearly uncontested and looking relatively fresh, but over the ensuing several minutes, straggler after straggler staggered over the finish line, many of whom had to be rushed to the hospital. The article suggested that the alarm in seeing the field of athletes literally devastated by the event in part caused its discontinuation in future Olympics.
@StackLoc5O5 It sure is man, sure is. It takes a lot of training and discipline just to finish. I ran in high school and just picked up running again, running my 1st 5K in 15 years!!! It's great!
@StackLoc5O5 LOL. wow. you must be on your runner's high. cross country is for skinny ass nerds who can't catch a football because they have zero hand eye coordination.
Probably don't have XC as an Olympic event because you could run the desired distance on the track and the half-marathon and marathon you hit the roads for . Regardless I think XC would be awesome for an Olympic event.
@mc02072 QFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you can speed walk looking like a silly duck (even though I say that it's impressive how fast they can speed walk) why can't you do some real running!
They actually had it until 1912. They took it out because "athletes were excessively tired after the event, and many had to go to the hospital." Pity they didn't put it back though. It would have been awesome!
Every day before our track meets, I look at this picture of Pre with his 'suicide pace' quote and think of his videos. I get so motivated to work harder than I ever have before.
XC should be an olympic event. i never really understood why it isn't. after all, they got mountain bike trail riding....and the triathlon as olympic events now. XC should be in there too.
Yeah, it would be great. I guess they like the 5k and 10K distances on the track because spectators can see the whole thing, and times are going to be faster (helping to break WR's.).
@MargaritasAntesPorco XC isn't an Olympic event due to the fact that it's not a "suitable" summer time sport. (XC runs in the autumn.) However, I think that XC's variability makes a definite contender for an Olympic sport.
@MargaritasAntesPorco XC runners, like myself, are the iron mans of any and everyone! well at my high school we are! who signs up to run 3 miles as fast as they can??
