hi, i have amd phenom ii X2 550 3.1Ghz processor i jst had unlock my cores x2 to x4 but its not working properly after updating the x4 entirely system was hanging like idol within few minutes. That's why i could tried to make it 3 cores using with msconfig-advanced option-number of processors=3. working awesome, but i want x4 processor instead of 3cores..

My Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2.

And how much voltage need to change while doing unlock....?????? Can u Pls explain me briefly...

My temps are 42deg at idle, and 50deg at full load.

@GamerAndReviewer actually you can buy this processor (phenom ii 550 x2) and unlock it to a 4 core or 3 core which approximately equals the athlon ii 450 x3 maybe more power than that in power. I had no luck making mine into a quad but i got it at a 3 core currently with the stock cooler

@JIPPIX94 I have used the Athlon II x2 250 for about a month now with a 5770 and i have been very impressed, playing source games, CODmw2, it plays and runns very smoothly on medium/high settings. I can only imagine that with the phenom it would run much smoother on high settings.

Got this cpu. great deal overclocked to 3.6 and unlocked to a quad core. running windows 7-64 pro. gigabyte ma790x-ud4p mobo. stays at 36C idle and 48c load using a GIGABYTE GH-PSU23-PB 120mm EBR CPU Cooler. this is a wounderful cpu if yours is stable to unlock the other2 cores. just gonna be a risk. dont expect it to work all the time.

That looks like CoreTemp in the beginning... that doesn't work so good, better use an in-windows BIOS program. with CoreTemp you always have to add appoximately 20 Centigrade. this may vary.

Cause when I hit the button for it to automatically overclock, the screen shuts off then turns back on and all i see is a strange rainbow color pattern, and it does this till I open task manager and it goes back to desktop.. Well my mobo is am2+ and i have this processor and it works great so i guess it works on am2 aswell. The am3 socket has less connective spikes on the cpu so thats why it fits, and thats why am2 cant get on am3 socket.

You can also unlock the other two cores if you have the right motherboard! My 550 is 3.6 x4 @ 1.38v Also I can push it to 4.0Ghz 1.4v.. but I like to be safe :)

@18phenom you could have poor air circulation in your case or if you live in a hot climate than the stock (if you are using the stock cooler) coolers have trouble keeping up. I put the hyper TX3 on my 550 and with a slight OC (3.4ghz) my idle temps are 28.5'c idle and 35'c under load but right now its 17'c in my house right now so I guess the CPU temps will rise as the weather gets hotter.

@18phenom I don't know about how it well it would work with the 9600 GT. I had the 275 GTX with the 550 and I could max out every setting and it would get very little lag. But when I over clocked it it was great and I was getting about 60 fps. I blew out my 550 LOL I tried to unlock the other cores and ruined the CPU LOL so I returned it and got the 720 BE. I posted a vid of my set up.

@David20931 Your overclocking that high with the stock cooler thats why your temps are so high. I never overclocked my 550 with the stock cooler. The stock cooler is only good for a 200 to 300 mhz overclock. Maybe more if you have a case with very good air flow.

@David20931 Its heat your lucky your haven't cooked your cpu yet. Bring the cpu back down to stock 3.0ghz to play it safe. About 3.3~3.4ghz is most the stock cpu cooler can take. Get your self a nice 20 or 30 dollar aftermarket cooler if your going overclock that high.

solid. But i do have a nice cooler. I have the Zalman 9500a or CNPS 9500. It' s a great cooler, keep my current phenom x3 8450 @ 2.55 ghz (from 2.1ghz) at like 14C at full load. I should be fine, plus my case has superb airflow.

I would get the Phenom II x2 cpu. It's been shown to outperform the Athlon II in most gaming test (even the x4). I would only recommend getting the Athlon II x3 if you're concerned about future games requiring multiple cores. But, I wouldn't worry about that until it becomes a real issue. Plus, there will probably be better processors out. Our you could simply get the Phenom II x3, which is only like $19 more than then X2.

first of all...i want make correction

thats not Phenom II X4 620 but Athlon 2 X4..

for me...i recommanded Phenom II X2 550 BE....low wattage than X4

although...some game not detect quad core cpu but its detect higher freq...

60% game review shown X2 (higher freq than X4) run smoother than X4 cpu

example..Crysis warhead run better on dual core cpu which got 3.0 than quad core which have 2.6GHz

remember...phenom II X2 got L3 cache 6mb while Athlon 2 X4 dont have L3 cache

this cpu is actually inbetween 940 and 955 ... when unlocked to B50 Quad ... i have one and its amazingly fast ... clocked @ 3.6ghz

Easy to unlock on gigabyte boards ... 790x chipset .. flash bios to F3 : ))

If your lucky and know how, you can unlock 2 or 1 disabled core(s) to make it tri or quad core, BUT some chips arn't stable with this, becareful

Phenom x2 550 has 3.1 Ghz

about x3 720 i don't know.the parameter of Ghz is the main here.
