@rubin949 It's called the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS). I don't think FSX has it built in, but you can probably download a gauge that does those callouts.

@Benjamen85 an popkamama: They're landing in Quito, 9.500 ft from what I remember. You take the power off at retard call and you will slam the a/c onto the Rwy; at 9,500 ft, air is very thin, and the landing characteristics are quite different, you need to fly the sucker down to touchdown, can't flare like you would normally do...
@TheGreatFlyer the Retard callout is not a reminder to flare the aircraft you usually begin to flare at 80-100 feet above the ground. It´s only a reminder to set the thrustlevers to idle
none of you know what the RETARD call out is for...autothrottle is engaged for landing and so the thrust is at idle, but on airbus planes the thrust levers don't move when autothrottle is engaged so the callout is to tell the captain to return the thrust levers to idle to disengage the autothrottle ready for landing
Wow, looked like a somewhat steep approach. First rate job. I noticed that the automated voice giving the radar altimeter call-outs is newer than some of the older Airbuses. The older ones say, "retard, retard, retard....drive." The older ones also sound more machine like.
I am wondering what the fly-by-wire guys think about this mode of control versus the traditional hydraulically controlled yoke inputs. I think that I would prefer the yoke in that I can get a "feel" of what my jet is doing. What say skippers?
@rmachayes All pilots are going to have to learn to love fly by wire because there will never be another traditional airliner ever produced. Boeing is now exclusively fly-by-wire for their new aircraft and Airbus has been fly by wire since the A320.
Most pilots who switch to fly-by-wire are apprehensive at first and then say that they would never switch back once they get used to it.
@thebigrigtrucker It's not calling you a retard. Retard means to slow. Slow down the engines, idle. Looks like the only retard here is.. you! Don't kick my ass, please.
@Yurin1 It is NOT so very cool when the computer rates your copilot as "Excellent" and the captains as "Retard". It will become a source of mob for one another.
@guitarplayerforu it does say retard retard .. Its a standard GPWS callout at 20 feet annunciated by all airbuses which is a command to bring the thrust levers to idle.
@yahul25 oh right i didn't know that, and you'd think i'd know stuff ike that cos i've been a avaintion enthusiast since age 7 and am now 19. also in Microsoft flight simulator x why does fly by wire not work?

@popkamama Retard means (aside from a generic term for mental handicap) to slow, or in this case, to slow the aircraft ie "retard" the throttle. Its airbus's funny way of telling the pilot to manually bring his throttles to idle. It is also used as an alert to pilots that the aircraft is automatically bringing the throttles to idle.
composite bolts snap, metal one's don't. At worst they bend and break after a very long time. What is the rationale for using composites? TO MAKE PLANES LIGHTER AND CHEAPER TO RUN. It's about money, not safety.
Are the airbus aircraft with the side stick controller (basically everything not the A300 or A310) more difficult to fly opposed to other aircraft such as the Boeing's which use the yoke? That seems to be the case on FSX thats why
I'm not trying to compare it to FSX because I know its a extremely oversimplified game, but I always read about pilots having prefrences with certain aircraft and I'm just curious if the fly by wire airbus aircraft are more complex
DonLduk , I perform always a manual approach without autopilot and autothrust... It's better fly manualy to maintain skills. Think that every time that we go to a simulator during a failure we always lost AP and A/THR
Most of the time, once the aircraft is setup on the ILS, the pilot flying with disconnect the autopilot anywhere from 2500ft above to 500ft and then fly it to touchdown - sometimes they will do an autoland as they have to do one at least once a month I believe or something near that :)
robots and computers are the future ! and actually boeing thought about that. The B777 and B787 are equiped with the fly by wire system. And they haven't died by wire yet though !
Well i personally dfon't like the side-stick controller. Its really awkward to use. I dont like the look of them either. dide its just my opinion why r u gettin so angry?
you are very immature in your speech, mister simCrew, your're judging by the lag you have on flying the A320 compared to the B737 on the sim ? Actually it's not only about you but every single person that says that airbus is better than boeing or vice versa. Life is not lived for judging and discriminating. We have on common passion and dream : "Aviation" and there is no better plane than an other but only, suits better for different types of operations. So peace and safe flights everyone !
I'm not being immature. The side stick controller is quite difficult to use and i don't like it. But thats my opinion. Others may not share it but thats my own. JMfan1392 has said it perfectly. Airbusses are waay to advanced. I mean boeing have good aircraft with waay more sales than airbus but still havent used the fly by wire system.
the side stick controller is pretty much tha same and even simpler when used to it, it's pretty much like a yoke cause when flying especially at landing (in the left seat) you have your right hand on throttle and the left hand on the yoke. If you realize it's exactly the samething with sidestick but with much less efforts you have the results. but of course it is a preference
there have been some tests on the manipulation of yokes and sidsticks, and the conclusions are that the manipulation of the sidesticks are much easier for the brain as you are treating all the axis simultaneously. But for the yoke it's a little different, you tend to, input in one way then in an other (genraly first you use the aileron axis then elevator) the reactions are slower.( Slightly) So it doesn't make a big difference. But that's why the fighter jets have sidesticks. to gain speed
No,fighters have them because a yoke would be to big in the little crammed cockpits of them. The sidestick is also quite confusing when it comes to knowing where your elavators are.
where are they?

If you realize it's exactly the samething with sidestick but with much less efforts you have the results. but of course it is a preference
happy flights
and for the sales i'm not sure...

No the yoke is closer and easier to acces than the sidestick. The yoke is much more practical and smoother. Joysticks are for gamers.

there have been some tests on the manipulation of yokes and sidsticks, and the conclusions are that the manipulation of the sidesticks are much easier for the brain as you are treating all the axis simultaneously. But for the yoke it's a little different, you tend to, input in one way then in an other (genraly first you use the aileron axis then elevator) the reactions are slower.( Slightly) So it doesn't make a big difference. But that's why the fighter jets have sidesticks. to gain speed

but it's obviously a preference. But if you type rated on a A320 and prefer yokes you are not gonna quit the job just because of sidesticks.

No,fighters have them because a yoke would be to big in the little crammed cockpits of them. The sidestick is also quite confusing when it comes to knowing where your elavators are.
