First of all thanks a lot for all these wonderful tutorials. I have a question: Since I use the Liquid Saffire 56 too, I was wondering if one should use the mono switch in the Saffire Mix Control software, or the one in the DAW or both together. Also, when mixing heavy rock music, guitars are normally hard panned L R, so when you do mix and listen to them in mono, is it normal for the levels to go down when in mono, and should we compensate for that?
hey i am new at this mixing thing am a young producer fr Jamaica with a simple home studio not much equipment just a tube mp-studio,a mxl 900 microphone and my laptop am having problems with my vocals in terms of them sounding too hard how do i cushion this without using too much reverb? and do you think that the eq and and the compressor has anything to do with it? i would really appreciate ur advise. nb i use waves plugins. mainly R Vox, stereo imager, de esser and waves reverb.
hello, great tutorial but how to i view this "mix bus" in protools? or is it just an aux with all the tracks bused to it? if its an aux i find it kinda annoying when soloing a track as i have to also solo the aux track lol i there a way to fix this?
@jilz01 It's just an AUX with every track routed to it. Simply hold command or control (on a PC) and click the solo button to put it in solo safe mode.
i I've noticed that in mono everything got louder , now I think its beacause of the pan law or somthing ,anyway , was that fine for you ? I mean , if the volume gets louder in mono , is that ok ? you just want to check for seperation and clarity ?
Another thing , the mix bus , is that a regular setero aux channel you sent your mix through ? (I am a cubase user so I dont understand this mix bus... I think in cubase there is an option to sum it in mono on the master fader...)
Excellent and very useful tip. Similarly, I test mixes in the car - load on the iPod, and listen as I run errands or go to/from the office, and I find that it also helps me to more reasily identify trouble spots in the mix (this works well for me during the composing process also).
I have mixed in mono for a few years now, and I think it is the most important thing you can do to get your mix to translate well. Probably 60% of my mix time is in mono anymore.....
I had never considered the idea that a stereo across the room is still sounding, effectively, in mono by the time the sound gets to you. That's a great point. It's probably also why my wife never notices things bouncing around left and right when she's sitting at her computer and I'm sitting at mine playing her a mix. I guess I just needed you to spell it out for me.

@amirhe6 Yeah, the pan laws might be different but your'e checking for balance and phase in mono. Not overall output level.
Yes, i mix everything to a "master fader" which is a stereo aux track basically.
