@Mozart2710 i agree. this piece, unlike many other mozart pieces is, well, romantic. too bad that many other mozart pieces are pure kitsch. imagine what music would he compose if he lived 20 years longer
It's also too bad people are willing to write off much of his music as "kitsch" obviously without having listened to most of it(the operas, concerti, quintets, choral works). And why does sounding "romantic" make the piece better? Do people assume each successive era in music is an improvement on the previous one? This piece is high classical era music at its most skillful and Mendelssohn called this piece "the most perfect rondo."
This piece is quite something. It seems a lot more different compared to his other "sadder" piano solo works (eg. K.310). I mean, something about this is very forlorn, almost dragging, yet, you have the chromaticism/ornamentation pushing it foward. There is also a slight hint of dissonance too.
Actually, if you listen to the ending of the piece, you'll hear those triplets with a Bb floating on top. Something seen in Chopin's maturer style D:
The big question is, even if we - of natural causes - never will get the answer: How would it affect the progress of Beethoven, if Mozart had died in 1831 instead of 1791...? I would not be surprised, if a 60 years old Mozart had written music at the level of Schumann or Brahms... Nevertheless, such thoughts can never be more than speculations...:-)
Such balance and unity of motivic material. The melody seldom strays outside the lines set before; except to great emotional effect. Subtleness and balance are not heavy enough words to describe the listening experience.
Mozart was the first romantic, you can ear great emotions from his piano`s concertos, his later syphonys and piano sonatas...he was a pioneer in a new world expressing feelings ;Beethoven was in love by Mozart´s pianos concertos

I can't believe I'd never heard this remarkable piece before today! I'd place it with the Fantasy K475 as a work far ahead of its time.

@jeunehomme9 Well called! I hate it when people confuse their own aesthetic biases with objective criticism (if such a thing even exists).

Indeed lucio and NemoProkofiev, I have long felt that Mozart, had he lived longer would have very likely gone in the direction of Romanticism.
One of most favorite pieces for piano and beautifully performed.

the first time i understand the contrapuntal section just following to the theme.
so many pianists have really difficulties how to tackle it.
also the more difficult parts at the end so naturally and logically played by mr.arrau.
obviously he was also a great mozart interpreter.
amazing!
