Everyone keeps throwing Shawn Lane's name in this genre.Lane had his own thing and was great but he by no means should be compared with fusion guys like Gambale-Totally different vocabularies and Gambale plays over chord changes that take quite a bit a study to play over while making some kind of statement while not just playing a bunch of patterns/scales/arpeggios. Gambale has made his mark in his genre as an innovator just as Lane has in his.
Frank is so much more than a "shredder" or inventor of sweep - he's a thought, rythmic, melodic player who always plays exactly the right thing. Hat off.
Hey modes9, there is nothing "cheesy" about Chick's Flamenco inspired stuff. Try listening to some Segovia and maybe...just maybe...you'll begin to understand what Corea already knows.
@Easleytee I mean, Lane was almost metaphysical. But when you get to their level, the skill is overwhelming. They both made good music, that's what counts.
At the Sydney concert, which I had the great privelage to go to, Chick introduced Frank as 'one of the greatest guitar players in the world' and I agree and also if Chick says that, and chooses Frank to play in RTF IV then all your comments about Frank not having enough heart are null & void... 'Nuff said!
I agree with the Bill Connors remarks, That album Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy was there best. Di Meola's Solo albums are very good however. But I can't help but say, B.B. King says more with one note than any of these shredder guys have in there whole careers. I have always Liked Pat Metheny or John Scofield better, They seem to no when To let off the pedal. And I have always like musicians who know what "not" to play.
@TheDarkprinceofjazz You are comparing BB King to Frank and DiMeola????? That's like comparing a NASCAR driver to a Formula 1 driver, or a minature golfer to PGA Tour pro. Incredibly weak analysis. These guys can play ANYTHING that BB can play and with more feeling. BB can't even dream of playing what DiMeola and Gambale play.
whatever , i have really liked none of these guys, al demiola frank gambale, i dont know, it's to technical and not enough heart, nothing like bill connors, for those of you who don't know was the original guitarist w/ RTF. Then u got these technicians, respectfully i know these guys put a lot of time into their instrument, the difference is that connors listened to horn players not other guitaristist. So heard the trio in vegas just stanley, lenny and chick, and they played a new music,
@kerryrock1 I have to disagree and also agree, Frank and Al have as much heart as Bill, but they all have different voices; with Frank, his phrasing does come from listening to horn players and using a technique which allows him to play very angularly as well as as fluidly at high speeds; like a horn player. But then, not all horn players play the same, look at say David Sanbourn and Ravi Coltrane which horn players do you mean?
I love the relationship that Chick and Frank have worked out over their many years of playing together between their respective instruments of support and interweaving. They're a joy to hear together.
yeh, like you said....

@kerryrock1 Such a tired and cliche argument in the face of great musicianship. Very myopic on your part.
