First met Mr. Wells at Theresa's on a Monday night in the summer of 1966. Sat and talked music with me and the other guys in my cleancut college white-boy "blues" band and couldn't have been more gracious. Insisted we get up and do a couple tunes. Ran into him several more times over the years and he was always kind and friendly, never condescending and certainly would not brook being condescended to. Never stopped exploring and innovating. He was a great artist. Happy birthday Junior Wells.
" I ain't doing too bad AND i aint got no brand-new bag"
...hey if ya ever even imaginated that u b crazier than me-bro here... i swear i aint neverr gonna want to run into ya... fare ye well,(but) fare ye far!
A great, great album. Saw Junior with Buddy Guy several times in the early '70s at small clubs around New England. What an amazing experience. Spent one band break talking with Junior at the bar. Man did he like to talk!!!
I first heard this album in 1974 at a bar in Stowe, Vermont. I never forgot about it and finally found it again about 10 years ago. Never tire of it..
I was sitting in a coffee shop the other day waiting for my car to be repaired, and then this song came on and blew me away. What a great uptempo blues track. It reminds me a lot of "Messing with the Kid", especially the guitar riff. I was lucky enough to have seen Junior and Buddy playing club shows in the late 80's because my friend dragged me down there and was tight with Buddy. He used to bring Buddy a bottle of Cognac for every show and additional pleasantries too. Thanks! I love this tune!
@vrietmet They were kindred spirits, for a fact. I saw them both and know whereof I speak. Ask B. B. King if you're wondering. Or Carol Fran, or Jackie Wilson...well, he's gone, but you get the drift.
I alsat album since...long ago...1973 for me, I think. Saw Junior on the first ever "Soundstage" which was a tribute to Muddy Waters and Junior's "Messin' With The Kid" was the highlight of an otherwise sad evening. Mike Bloomfield almost single handedly ruined the tribute. Muddy and Junior managed to rise above the dross...
BTW, IMO Buddy Guy made some of his best music playing with Junior. And, Junior wasn't really a badass...decent human being by accounts I've heard.
All you blues fans out there, and all you wannabe blues peoples...if you ain't got it already, GO find HOODOO MAN BLUES by Junior Wells on Delmark Records. I got on to this lp in summer 67, and it's still in my all time top ten of blues LPS. It is the bona fide FIRST real blues lp....recorded as an ALBUM and not a collection of singles. It was done to represent what Jr and the band would sound like on a good night at Theresa's, etc. Hence the ENDINGS on all tunes.
Jr Wells was from the 'in your face' school of Blues. He knew what he could do and he did it with unbridled dynamism. He 'da man, but I wouldn't want him hanging too close with my wife or daughter. ha ha.
I saw him 81 together with B.Guy. I went backstage after concert for a picture. Junior agreed & guess what : camera didn´t work it ran out of pictures cause too many were taken during gig. This I regret until today and most probably for ever...
I am afraid to tell you that it was mixed:Both concerts(about 10month a part) were about 2 hours with one break in the middle. The 1st set was always very, very good while the 2nd set was only okay because whether Jnr (1st concert) or Buddy(2nd) didn'T gave 100% anymore (one reason was proably the german beer). Two special attractions were Buddy Guy playing&singing in the style of Lightning Hopkins,T-Bone&Muddy for about 10 min(1st gig)& Jnr doing JamesBrown's Super bad incl. dancing (2nd gig)
Junior actually emulated timing that was inspired by "marching bands".
That little double-time rythem thing he does is a perfect example.
Junior was a good friend of mine & we played together & recorded an album in the late 80's... I still perform this song live every week. in his honor. (there is a youtube of me doing it somewhere here...).
As good as it gets. Probably only available on vinyl ('til now). No matter how you try, you can't buy, You can't get that stuff no mo'. Thanks for sharin'.
Damn , doesn't it any more raw than this ...cigarette filled club , cheap whiskey , knife fight in the parking lot ... Junior trying to get paid for his bad ass performance ..... just like Tabasco , aint no substitute .
The Album, Hoodoo Man Blues was one of my father's few blues albums in a vast collection of jazz records. I always loved it and bought the CD version when it came out. Classic Chicago Blues.
what's the song about?

I bought this LP when it came out back in the 60's.I wore it out and had to buy another copy!
Some of the younger players should give this another listen.
How to say plenty and still leave some space...what rhythm can be etc etc -still a big big favourite!
