Goes good with New York City images, yes. But I always thought this piece really was for all of America. Should have had trans-continental images, really.
This is really a superb piece of music especially when heard with the video back-drop of New York City. I enjoy it most when alone as I find it quite therapeutic.
Gorgeous, one of the finest blendings of image and music on You-Tube. Bernstein's best version as well, the Columbia Symphony was a pick-up orchestra of Hollywood musicians who played on soundtracks and did a lot of jazz, and it shows. Good recording as well, you can hear piano parts that normally are buried under the orchestra. The selected pix are spectacular. I did miss shots of The City in winter but that wasn't what you were trying for. Many, many thanks, Gilda!
I haven't been back to NYC for more than 20 years. Your incredible montage of images remind me of WHY I miss it so much. Thank you so much for taking what must have been an almost inordinate amount of time to produce this gem.
Brilliant- One of the finest- if not THE finest- Utube videos ever.. Marvellous performance of course.
I've long thought that Gershwins Rhapsody was/is the most important musical composition to come out of the western hemisphere- for its daring, its innovation, its imagery, its jazz themes that evoke the great city of New York, and its haunting beauty.
And for George Gershwin, son of impoverished Jewish immigrants, his legacy for all time. What a tragedy he was taken so young
This made me cry for joy! I was born in NYC in 1943, pictures of me feeding the ducks at the cement pond in Central Park when I was three. My Dad holding me in his arms in front of Macy's at the Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1947.
George Gershwin died tragically from a brain tumor when he was in his 30s. Can you imagine New York City without his wonderful music?
A GREAT job on this video! Wonderful images! As a New Yorker I can appreciate all of this. And one of the best versions of this incredible piece of music. thanks for sharing this with us.
spectacular video of new york city. complete with panoramic views, live video and stills from the past and present. if you've never been, it's the closest thing i have ever seen to actually being there. and, gershwin too! rhapsody in blue... the entire piece! thank you so much!
Parysia77, Very impressive! Jazz/swing bands (Glenn Miller, for example) played this but this orchestra version you posted is great. Great video. (Simply put, this is "the best, Jerry, the best."). Heck, I HAD to added it to my Big Band / Swing / Jazz playlist.
You get a 6 from me! You caught it all, the moods, the imagery, the elegance, and the quirks. You captured it from all angles and from dawn to dusk. I feel like I can claim New York as my city. It is in a way; I was there once. Thank you for the trip back.
@callahanstudio Thank you so much for your comment and your rating! I am also a New Yorker at heart, having visited there twice. I have relatives who were born in Brooklyn and who work in Manhattan. Some of my best friends are New Yorkers. I'd move to New York City if I didn't like the weather in San Francisco much better. Warmest wishes, Gilda
The personality of our Cultural Capital Cty captured in a variety of moods and impressions; an elegant marriage of music and imagery, sensitive to nuances of both; this video soars above quotidian urban reality up to the visionary domain of people who design cities and artists that derive inspiration from them.
@callahanstudio I'm very touched by your kind and eloquent appraisal of this video. Many thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed it. Best wishes, Gilda.
Well done, very nice, very nice. I was thrilled when I saw that you were using one of Bernstein's recordings -- he's one of the best when it comes to this music. And the images were really stunning -- I love how it went over the course of the day, too, from morning to evening. That was very nice. And I love that you included the birds, too. It's just as much their city as ours.
I have a question: how were you able to upload a video over fifteen minutes?
@darkprose Thank you so much for your very nice comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this video and that you liked the birds being included. New Yorkers have a National Pigeon Day in recognition of the heroism of pigeons during wars and other crises. Re your question, a few weeks ago on the upload page I received a message saying my account was enabled for uploads longer than 15 minutes. Not sure why, maybe because some of my videos have been featured, but I'm still limited to 2GB for each upload.
@Parysia77 Ah, I had that message, too, but then my Eyes Wide Shut video was flagged and deleted, and it will be six months before the strike against my account lifts -- it might have something to do with that, perhaps. Oh, well.
I love that you had included Breakfast at Tiffany's, very nice. And when you consider all the life that a city supports, there is no way you can describe it as exclusively "human." A city like New York is its own entity and the home of many, many kinds of creatures.
@darkprose And should human beings expire tomorrow, think of all the life that will remain and flourish in New York. To speak of the "life of the city" isn't just a sexy metaphor: the city is an emergent reality as real as the human beings within it (which are also emergent from their own bodily systems).
@darkprose So true. The Discovery Channel documentary "Life After People" vividly depicted abandoned skyscrapers, after hundreds of years, becoming "vertical ecosystems" complete with birds, rodents and even plant life.
@darkprose I thought your Eyes Wide Shut video was excellent. Breakfast at Tiffany's remains the quintessential movie about New York, the quintessential cinematic city. Astronaut Sandra Magnus said that when a person gazes at the Earth from space "it makes you think about our planet as a whole system. We're all there together living together as human beings and other organisms and we have to take care of each other."
