Poor Dean got beat up a lot by her, lol. Ruth is very funny. She is awesome. Dean Martin, hmmm, I don't care how old he looks he always looks sexy. Especially when he laughs.
We will not see the likes of these entertainers again. They were all top notch in my book. Ruth Buzzi was and is simply the best to me anyway and the reason my wife and I love these clips. They all really complimented one another when it came to performing. Ruth made sure the jokes were always on her and that in itself is the making of a true comedian.
This would sooooo make a good SNL sketch with Armsien as Dean Martin, that guy who played Sinatra on SNL, have Norm McDonald cameo as Burt Reynolds, and Darryl Hammond could cameo as Sean Connery!
I wonder what Welles was thinking when the entire side of his table started with the 'purse' fight! His look is priceless! Ruth Buzzi was great there w/ Frank & Dino! Miss them all.
The Roasts had representatives of the top talent of their generation. You couldn't afford to have that level of talent in the same room for the same purpose today. That's what makes the Comedy Central Roasts so cheap in more ways than one. Neither the roasters or most of the roastees are A-list I couldn't believe the Shatner roast was nominated for anything(an Emmy if I remember correctly-I hope not). Why bother? This was how it was done.
@fgldnglbs Actually, I don't believe this is true. And while I am not too young to remember that time, I have to wonder if you've ever watched any of the more recent roasts. An A-list is not just about fame. While the regulars at today's roasts, while not being household names, are the cream of the crop and are real masters of what they do - Jim Norton, Adam Ferrara, the recently departed Greg Giraldo, Jeffrey Ross, Nick Depaulo are all very clever comedians - in some ways even better...
...than their predecessors (if only because there are so many less restrictions on what roads they can go done).
This idea has been applied to SNL, as well, with boomers insisting that the first cast was the best - it's just easier to do that than actually watching for yourself. As someone who has followed the show since it's first years,...
...I can say that the first cast wasn't close to the best - not even second best. Carvey, Myers, Hartman,...that cast was infinitely more talented and clever than the slapstick antics of Chevy and friends.
@fgldnglbs The Comedy Central roasts are a joke. Filled with lewd, inappropriate humor. It's just not funny don't know how people can laugh at those jokes.
@fgldnglbs I know what you mean man. We used to have great comedians like Paul Lynde, Milton Berle, Don Rickles, Now we got some guy named Lisa Lampanelli in charge!
OMG, that free-for-all that ensued on the dais...what a hoot when THEY ganged up and started hitting HER!! Pee-your-pants comedy at its best!! These folks knew how to do it!!
She's gone mad! Poor Dean and Frank!

@Gecko7291971 oh sure, Dino took a lot from her overall across the roasts. Collectively, if you will.

These roasts had true talent! Although sad, because none of those talents are still here.

Hey, I love the way they can be funny without a whole lot of cursing and vulgarity. I guess that's why shows lasted so much longer back then.
