@motonagajiro wow did you film this? if the chianese goverment caught you filming that, they would of shot you as a spy. great video though. i find stuff like this facinating.if you havnen't already you might want to check out famagusta (not sure the spelling's wright) on the island of cypress.
@graph15 It hasn't existed since the early 90s during British rule, I think it was likely a bit of a tourist attraction... From the outside at least... lol
I heard about it in The Bourne Supremacy (book). But I didn't look into it, I remember ( in jest) I warned my sister (who was travelling to Asia). To stay out of the Walled City, little did I know it had been demolished. Black Ops revived my interest.
I played black ops, but I didn't realize that the interrogation mission was in the walled city - I just thought it was somewhere in kowloon. Then, I was just reading about enclaves and exclaves, and learned of the walled city since it was an exclave of China back during British controlled Hong Kong. So I didn't learn about it from black ops - yay!
Nice job on the vidio stabilizing effect! i could imagine how complete shit this video would have looked like without it. it wouldnt be worth watching
i'd heard of Kowloon from Black Ops, but searched "abandoned cities in the world" and found out it was real, and really fucked up. opium, prostitutes, dog meat, and a really unsanitary place. incredibly interesting though.
Can somebody explain me, why the the date in the camera is moving? I thought he was filming out of a box. But then the date would need to stand still..
Because the movie is actually unstable as hell, but it's been stabilized later. So if the edges of the screen stood still, the picture would shake instead.
Although they have totally taken down the place, it is now a great park and monument to what it used to be. I think it's one of the best free attractions in Hong Kong. I always take tourists there.
@devilhunterred even though kowloon was a part of hong kong, the brits didn't have shit to say there... the chinese mafia ran this city, there was no police, no law, nothing, so the other guy is halfway right
@MrWootman10 Yeah, right, anarchist paradise... working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and sleep in a damp room at night, without seeing daylight - all for the profit of someone living in comfortable houses. I wonder why everybody doesn't want to live like that.... (or maybe you live in the suburbs?)
I went there once when I was 9 to visit some family friends who had a HK style convenient stores there. All I can remember now is going through those funny many alleyways apparently inside a building. It was quite an experience.
It's bouncing around, so i guess he's trying to conceal it. Why'd he hide the camera? Was he scared that if he held the camera out it would get stolen?
Damn shame they tore it down, the few people i have spoken to that have been there lived there or had family that has, said while it did have some criminal element, they kept to them selves and the city was not the cesspool the local government portrayed it to be.
Such urban treasures being demolished is a shame all about keeping up with appearances.
Almost shocking that part of it did not collapse in I'm sure it was under tons of stress the way it was built. To bad they did not leave some buildings left for the park that was made in it's spot.
I first heard of Kowloon Walled City on the documentary "Dangerous Days: Making of Blade Runner". At some point someone said it was a really Blade Runner like place. Gotta say I never thought it would be possible to go back in time and walk on Kowloon Walled City again...amazing document indeed. Thank you, motonagajiro! =)
i grew up in a slum similar to a place like this. i tell you it is one of the most gloomiest places in the world. rats, cockroaches lurking in the dark, drug addicts and weird wierd people in the deep alleyways, there is nothing good about a slum
I guess many of you think this is amazing footage but it doesn't really show anything. You could probably get the same thing walking down any Hong Kong street.
@diego81990 well it was already quiet there at 1990 because people abandoned the city ...in 1987, it was already decided that it would be removed and eviction started.
The KWC is gone but the Chungking Mansion is going strong. If you want a taste of how the KWC may have been to walk through, try one of the alleys on either side of the Chungking Mansion on Nathan Road.
Haha..anyone else notice 6:54..the same woman is sitting there at the same spot as shown in the Japanese document Kowloon walled city 九龍城砦 (at 1:24)??? Guess she always sits at the same spot!!
To outsiders, this place seems like a nightmarish dystopia where no light ever comes through. To the residents of the Kowloon Walled City, it's a life as normal as anyone in Hong Kong.
There's not much crime in this city since the 80's, and it's a gigantic community that people got used to. It's pretty sad it's gone, it's been home to so many people.
I would have loved to have gone there. Whenever we went on vacation, I would slip away, and explore this town in Mexico at night. Armed with only a flashlight, and a sense of adventure. There were risks. I could easily have encountered scorpions, rattlers, and hoodlums who roamed the streets. Still, I consider those times, the best years of my life. The payoff was looking up at the night sky, and see the countless stars shining back down.
I love the night, urban environments, exploring every inch of the human mind, especially it's flaws... This city had it all , and in a vast quantity...
I do believe big cities in the future are going to be just like that...lawless,everyone on their on, aglommerations of tall buildings making it impossible for the sunlight to reach the ground, the constant feeling of sadness... And yet I'd be damn pleased if I still lived when that happened.
bro, if you really wanna live in those places you should move in with me, lol. I live in a similar place, although not as massive as kowloon, but I love it
that kind of intrigue and nostalgia is the most intens and beautiful feeling of life I can experience... I can't explain why, but it just does something to me
The eerie aspect to it is just so...it really brings tears to my eyes, I wish this place still existed, I would have given anything to live there.
You can hear the wind whistling on the background...is just so beautiful.. It calms me down greatly, the best part is that it must have been like that all day and night long, because of the overly extended narrow paths...
Woah, I would have given anything to visit Kowloon, it's so strange to such things right in the middle of the city, pity I wasn't even born when it was demolished...
it was the one of worst decisions in the history that make this masterpiece demolished. :p
