I lived in Boston and paid about 25% in taxes(to fed, state, medicare, ss etc.)

Then I worked in China for a year and paid 5%.

And bear in mind that my Chinese income was several times the average, while my Boston income was average, for the respective locations.

The difference is that in China government entitlements have been eliminated. There is no social security, medicare, medicaid, etc. Families take care of the elderly and disabled.
