  • I drove across the USA from west to east in 1988 with my brother who has lived in the country for over 30 years. The closest rendezvous I got to Spencer was Omaha. If I'd have known then what I know now about Dewey I would've made a b line to that township just to see him. I feel short changed that I'll never get the opportunity to see Dewey alive. I adopted a handsome birman from my local SPCA in 1999 & I had him for 10 years before he died. Rest in peace Dewey & my beautiful boy, Big Fulla.

  • @HattieLovesCattie u mean in 2010?????/? omi god!!!! i must get it i luv his books i wish i got to see him!

  • I've read the book 4 times and it really told me that dewey is more than a cat he is a library cat.

    Rest in peace dewey........

  • Today I finished reading the story of Dewey. I never had the pleasure of meeting Dewey, but broke my heart when I got to the bit where he passed away. RIP Dewey Readmore Books xxxx

  • @Smitten001 yea if he didnt pass i might have been up on my way to see that cute fella

  • He was declawed? Funny that's not mentioned in the book. Or is it only the UK edition, since chopping off kitten's toes is considered animal cruelty in the UK and ilegal. Only in the US could someone go on about their kitten having frostbite when found and then a short time later have the same toes chopped off. No wonder he hated the vet.

  • @MoonrisingUK I think he was required to be declawed in order to be a library cat.

  • Also many declawed cats end up in shelters and being euthanised anyway: because up to a 3rd of them develop behaviour problems.

I'm not sure if links are allowed: so search for the Paw Project (read the FAQ page) and lisa violet educate don't amputate (read the horror stories)

Having calmed down... I'm sure Vicki never meant to harm him. I know many in the US don't realise what declawing means. I just hope she's realised and her new cat still has all her toes.

  • @MoonrisingUK It's better than the cat dying, isn't it?

  • We have library cats in the UK who are not declawed. In fact I've heard of a cat who's been at a library in the US for years who's not declawed (sadly threatened with the op now). Yep, I'm sure it was at least partly the library board who 'required' it. However it is not required for a cat, in any circumstances. As for being better than dying... read a few stories of declaws that have gone wrong and you might think different. Being alive with claws is better.

  • @MoonrisingUK Yes,the declawing mention is in the US book.

  • Thanks Hattie, that's interesting. Reading it again I did think it looked edited out: there's a paragraph about his cute paws before the op and descriptions of him hobling after (giving rather the wrong impression of neutering if you don't know), but nothing to actually say he was declawed. Is it just stated in the US edition or is there any opinion/discussion? Thanks!

  • I will go back and look on what page they mentioned it.Its in the first chapter coz Vickie took Dewey to the vet then talked to the library board and told them what the vet for recomended for Dewey to live at the library.

  • Ok Moon.I just read the first chapter again.I sure don't see anything on the declawing but I think its mentioned later in another chapter. The main thing in the 1st chapter is allergies and that the library was big and spacious enough and that Dewey didn't shed much.

  • Thanks, let me know if you spot anything. I'd guess it would be when he gets neutered since that's where the sort-of-references-if-you-know are in the UK edition. It's the last couple of pages of chapter 4.

  • 1st ref: 'Do you think this is absolutely necessary, Doctor?'

    'Cats need to be neutered.'

I looked down at Dewey's tiny paws, which had finally healed. There were tuffs of fur sticking out from between his toes. 'Do you think he's part Persian?'

  • Next page: But I wasn't alone. An hour later, as I was hanging up the phone, I looked up to see Dewey hobbling through my office door. I knew he'd been getting love and attention from the rest of the staff, but I could tell from his determined wobbling that he needed something more.

  • I looked at Chap.4,p.37.The vet says Dewey needs to be " fixed ".There is a mention of Dewey's paws healing and he still walking on them wobbily.

  • Is that reference to his paws healing after he's declawed?

Shame if they using 'fixed' to cover declawing. From what I've seen elswhere online there do seem to be a lot of folks think declawing is just what you do along with neutering, and don't even think about it, or realise thats its a major operation, especially compared to neutering a male cat.

  • No, the word fixed here in the US is another word for " spaying and neutering ".He had to be declawed since he lived in a " public " place and a child or adult could get scratched.

  • Sounds like it was being used to cover declawing as well, since if it's a straight switch of the words the description of his paws follows straight after.

No 'had to be' about it. As I said before, there's library cats all over the world with claws, including in the US. If you want to say 'she was advised it was needed' or 'people believed it had to be' fine. The only time UK cats 'have to' loose even a single claw is to prevent a damaged/deformed one growing wrong. Somehow we cope fine...

  • Well,Dewey was able to live at the library for 19 years. He only got " out " once for 3 days.If Dewey had to live elsewhere,it was at Vicki's house. He did stay there during the weekends and holidays.

  • I'm not sure what your point is. My previous cats lived with me for 17 and 19 years. One of them got out for 3 days. She did not return totally traumatised by the experience. My cats had claws, as do the cats I have now, and all the cats in the UK. Including library cats and 3 cats I personally know living in local public buildings. Dewey COULD have lived 19 years with claws, and would have had he lived in the UK.

  • My point is in the US,they harp on cats with no claws can't survive outside.Dewey was basically an " indoor " cat and many Americans have their cats " declawed " to protect the furniture and they never live outside.Yes,Dewey could have lived in a English library with his claws but not here.I don't know what the rules are for the US cats?It also depends on city and town laws about animals living in " public " buildings.

  • Yes, I thought that was what you were getting at. Dewey rather represents that you can never be sure an inside cat won't get outside, he did for 3 days and came back traumatised. Burglars and fire can be other causes: firemen will leave doors and windows open to allow any trapped animals to escape from a fire.

There are no laws in the US that cats have to be declawed anywhere. And if your cat is less important than your couch, you shouldn't have a cat.

  • In fact many declawed cats start avoiding their litter trays. Pee is much more damaging to furniture, carpets and floorboards than a little scratching. And scratching can be prevented by a suitable tall enough (many posts are made for kittens...), secure enough and well positioned post.

  • @HattieLovesCattie oh yes they also mentioned that in the book

  • I love this cat and I'll never forget him

  • right i looked at this vdeo i crued i saw the book

  • I have just finished the book this evening and defy anyone not to cry! Beautiful story. Dewey was such a special cat to those that needed him. I can't have my cat live with me, she's at my Mum's, This makes me miss her even more.

  • i am reading this book at the moment because my mum has just read it and she said she couldn't see the writing at the end because she was crying too much! I love cats i have one! This is a nice video poor dewey. I'm happy for Vicki though cause she's been through alot and this book has made a hell of a lot of money so congratulations to VICKI. Dewey =^ ^=

  • @alicecullenvampyre How much has the book sold so far?I had read over a million as of the last fall. With the sucky economy,it maybe would have sold more.I also wonder about her new book, the Dewey kids book?

  • i no it has sold a couple of million because they have released a new edition and dewey has a red ribbon on his neck. I don't think the kids book will sell as much as the original because not that many people know about it but it's still pretty cute! =^..^= meow meow x

  • I bought the book,There's A Cat in the Library for my brand new library. This is a different book,a childrens book.

  • My grandma gave me the book this summer, a few days after I put my own two year old kitten to sleep... When I first saw the book I was devastating by the similar looks they both have and I didn't really wanted to read it. Today I finished it and I gotta say that Dewey was, with no doubt, an amazing cat and I'm sure he touched each and every person by only looking at them. It's so great to watch what a single cat can teach us all.

Thanks Vicky for sharing the story of you both.

  • I love Dewey soooooo much! My english teacher did a boik report on this book of him and now im searching it all over the nternet! I love cats! including Dewey and my cat Tinkerbell!!!!

  • I loved this book. It was a great before bedtime read.

This is also a trivial pursuit question which I answered correctly - Thank you Vicki!

  • At the 1:57 mark, that is Page,Vicki's kitten. She has been with Vicki almost a year now.

  • @HattieLovesCattie Found out later its a he.Page Turner weighs 12 lbs now and not done yet!!!!

  • I read the book often, and I always cry when Vicki has to put Dewey down. He's the Long Lost King of Spencer Library.

  • I wish that Dewey still lived on, but that would (maybe) mean that he would have a lot of problems. Great Job with video!!!

  • Dewey colocou Spencer no mapa !

  • :D i'm brazilian (do not speak english)!! love this DEWEY!!! congratulations, VICKI MIRON!!! love it!!

  • RIP Dewey!!

  • aww this was beautiful... I love Dewey sooo much, wish I had met him , he'll be remembered

  • dewey will always be remembered

  • At the 1:04 mark, that is the new statue of Dewey, not the pix that hangs on the wall inside the library entrance.A man had a gal in Idaho or Montana to sculpture it in memory of his parents who loved cats and were from Spencer.
