There's an intersting explanation that goes a long way to gaining some understanding of the entire album let alone the metaphore of this beautiful piece of music. It's way too long to be posted so I have to break it up.
Firstly let me set the premise.Faust is a philisophical character of german legend that enters into a pact with the devil to find true happiness. This story has been interpreted by many philosophers and play writes in order provoke discourse on the human condition. end of pt.1
pt.2 I was reading reviews on reckoner when i happened upon this passage. I wanted to post it because we all need to read it to either, confirm what we already thought or reveal a new dimension and reason to love radiohead even more. This isn't "the definitive article" however I thought we could all do with another lens to go in our rose coloured glasses. end pt.2
I am stunned by the depth and artistry of Radiohead's music and lyrics. My background is literary and so I keep finding or making literary associations with their songs and perhaps they are intended. For instance, Reckoner keeps reminding me of a line from the opening of Book II from Goethe's Faust, "Life is not light but the refracted color." The meaning is that life is not pure but mixed, like rainbows. end pt.3
Radiohead's album title, "In Rainbows," and this song from which it comes, suggest there are deals made, and reckonings to be made by the life we live and these deals mean we live multiple lives, not a singular or pure one. Thus, as the song, Reckoner, says, "Because we separate like/ripples on a blank shore." That is to say, we fragment and in the fragmentation make and are "in rainbows." We are clothed and bathed in the colors of life.
This is the exit door from the moral dilemmas that would condemn us to hell for the choices we make, the inflexible codes that demand we live an impossibly pure life. It is redemption and is similar to the redemption of Faust at the end of the story, at least in Goethe's version. Interestingly, the song preceding this one is currently called "Faust Arp." This further leads me to think it was intended.
And Mephistopheles, shows up in, "Videotape," which interestingly enough is a song about a kind of redemption. The album has the vague structure, to me, of the Faust story.-------
To wahWahwahHendrix, hope this helps with looking at this song and the rest of the album in a new light and uncovered a new depth to the mystery of their music...
According to combatcori,"The album has the vague structure, to me, of the Faust story.-------"
You think that he whole album is indirectly related to FAUST? Well....
Radiohead's songs are always literature-related since a long time ago. But it is only "related", not meaning that the whole album is about the same thing, right?

i wonder why always choose UK,Us,France or similar countries to prepare such kind of good and strange concerts..and wonder why they never think to visit Turkey despite they have a lot of fans here..well somethings reminds me kinda "God Loves His Children??!!??..Applauds go to Radiohead who let to please Colonist Countries children..Yeah,however They are god's children....What a great Pity!!!
I thought the exact same thing when I first heard this track on Oct. 10. It sounds so much like "Wolf at the door" It took me soooo long to get into Gaust Arp, It was the only song on the album I didnt like, but it came around. The lyrics are so childishly sweet and innocent, just like what you would expect from Thom..
Beautiful song. Gets kinda stuck in ya head though.

I'm annoyed by the person screaming for "Paranoid Android." lol
They had just played "15 Step," "Bodysnatchers," Nude," "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi," and "All I Need" -- didn't the person notice a rainbow pattern?

actually i am German and also know much about Faust tragedy ..
The connection with a Rainbow and the different aspects of life is cool, because mephisto says "first i show u the little and then the big world"
Maybe they dont put a focused meaning behind it like many writers do but let it inspire u how YOU understand it ..
THats my opinion, that you neednt relate it to one thing

This is the better way to listen to RH live: a small place, a small stage, not too much people and a more intimate atmosphere.
I love this song, it's simply perfect!
