if you have listened to the music as dancers do, you might have found that all the tunes(especially hiphop, funk music) share universal structure on their beats, special effect, vocal, etc.

So even when freestyling to the music youve never heard, you can still ride the beat and even express the 'sources', though memorizing all the music will be far more perfect

listening to them and studying them. i have 1200 popping songs on my sidekick and i put it on shuffle and try to memorize them. if u see a popper on the streets most of them will be listening to music. very complex songs like 'ltlp' by 'edit' took me 3days to memorize....
