The sun does play a role as solar activity in recent decades has been rising, and we recorded the largest solar flare in history. BUT we are to blame for spurring this thing on, causing it to be much more rapid than it would be if it was left to progress naturally. We're at solar minimum right now, solar maximum only a few years away.
