If I had a dime for every time I read on YoutTube that Ray Davies and the Kinks are underrateed, I'd be wealthy. Another thing that I read a lot is that they never sold out. I guess there's a correlation there, huh? I feel honored and blessed that I was exposed to this music. One advantage to the internet is that now others can discover what a treasue Ray's music is. It thrills me to pieces when I see people discover the Kinks.
As usual Ray is a half mile ahead of any of us. He was/is the best lyracist of his generation, with all due respect to John "Mr. Big' Lennon", Dylan, McCartney, whoever. The song is up for interpretation, (like the Bible). Ray does like to play w/peoples heads. The Kinks never got SUPERSTAR acclaim in the US because you have to both listen&think,a tall order4some. Song is on "Backtrackin'.
So this isn't a super religious song. It was released on a soundtrack. Percy, about a penis transplant...... So again I'm pretty sure it's more about society accepting people for who they are. The album/soundtrack wasn't released in the US. So thats a pretty good reason why most people haven't heard these tracks in America.
One should wonder, given all that Ray has written and said over the years, how much "faith" is involved in this song. As some have said, this song represents a protest by Ray because he did not think transplants or sex changes were "proper", which means more than just "moral". Ray disagreed with alot that was happening at this time and as years went by. He always spoke his mind as he saw things at the time, with some insight into whether many of the changes happening made us happier.
This is my favourite song by the Kinks. That is saying a lot, since I am an immense fan.One of my regrets in life is missing them,Glastonbury, early nineties.Could hear them from the campsite but they were on very, very early!
Ray wrote this song as a form of protest in reaction to the plot line, once he found out that the subject matter of this film was about a penis transplant. Percy is a good album, but like any sound track it has some pretty bad instrumentals, including an instrumental version of Lola!

I didn't mean my last comment - I don't care what faith or religion Ray is of, I could never lose respect for such a great man and brilliant song writer. I may be an atheist, but I must admit that this song is simply beautiful.
To be honest, although The Kinks are my favourite band I lost a lot of respect for Ray Davies when I heard he was religious, I thought only idiots could believe in such nonsense. Perhaps all the drugs he has smoked over the years have taken their toll and have ultimately reduced his brain to mush? He is a brilliant song writer, and I respect him for that, but I really did believe he had sense enough not to believe in the book of fairytales.
wow. that was an extremely asinine, narrow-minded, and mostly offensive, thing to say. did it ever occur to you that i might be Christian? but thanks anyway for telling me that my brain must be mush to have faith in the "book of fairytales"
Yes, yet another long lost Davies classic. Equally neglected is the track "The Way Love Used To Be" from the same Percy soundtrack album. God bless Ray Davies!
My favorite Kinks, this song makes me cry. A song of human frailty in a Kink's Soundtrack for a movie about the first Penis transplant. Only Ray Davies!!
Nobody. Because nobody is the songwriting genius that Davies is. He's the most socially conscious, middle class oriented, original songwriter there has every been. God, look at the music today. God send us another Ray Davies!!
@MrGriffey5656, yes and I love that album. He tries to combine an American type of vernacular with his Muswell surroundings. An under appreciated classic.
Perfect! I just sat thru Percy again. It's NOT that bad of a film. This song sets a gentle tone at the beginning. The best one is "The Way Love Used to Be" though, in chapter 19.
I'm surprised the film or its sequel (Percys Progress) isnt up on Youtube..
Robyn Hitchcock's father did the script for this film.
It IS a great soundtrack. Some of the songs off this (Gods children, moments) are absolutely incredible and perhaps the finest songs written by the man
The final Kinks album Phobia explores what happens when we're no longer able to go back.

This another song written by Ray Davies, that is so underrated
I agree with some of the comments here, he was so more advanced than the so called "super composers"
I have the feeling that John Lennon knew it!!
Paul McCartney? Too little a musician to know

In his autobiography, Ray said that when he was a kid, his family doctor told his mother that Ray was destined to become a preacher.
Preach on, Ray !

Songs of this simplicity and beauty could be what just the church needs to save it from the decay it seems to be going through.
I'll bet far more people would be willing to stand up and say they believe themselves to be children of God if this was their anthem.

Amen. Ain't gonna save 'the church', though.
But we're all God's children.

Don't think religion is nonsense, personally
I'm not a believer but I can understand why someone needs faith in something to exist..
Some sort of reason to exist..

Ray once again bucks every popular trend with the lyrics. Who else would have written a song like this?
