Well done Paul, hopefully more people will do that. And I fully agree with what a user commented here that cyclists should go through compulsory safety/highway code courses, even if they can't hurt others as easily as a car, they still can cause danger indirectly, if they cycle carelessly and with no foresight as to how their cycling affects cars around them
I think all cyclist should be forced to do the highway code course then be giving a road licence, no road licence, then have your bike taken away, and I think that all car drivers should be giving additional training to help look out for cyclist, the problem is, they are not giving enough training, believe me I know, when took my driving course and done the test, there weren't enough information on hazard perception for cyclist, I use to be cyclist, I know the dangers & problems that can accure.
Mark, thats a bit pointless given that most cyclists drive (and we're talking over 80%) - so you are effectively asking for people to take a second test.
Riding a bike isnt that hard or dangerous. Its a common sense thing. Being in control of half a ton of metal, glass and plastic is a different equasion however hence the need for a test there.
The DSA often welcome opinion about cycling and tests so you might try contacting them as I did last year. :-)
THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE WRONG, i use to be a cyclist, they are the most volunable and common sense does not come into action when it comes to hazard perceptions of cars suddenly pulling out of junctions and blind spots, riding a bike is easy, riding it on the main road is dangerous, that's why I think that they all do a highway code course, I've nearly knocked down several cyclist where they stopped never indicated, carried on through red lights, not stopping for pedestrians, coming down a one way
Ask yourself this Mark, did a test stop those drivers from pulling out, parking on pavements or running reds?
There are already several initiatives to dissuade anti social cyclists, with Bikeability and even the Police getting involved. Good cycling starts young too but there is no national Proficiency training strategy.
I did Cycle Proficiency as a kid and have read the highway code (a few times). I dont see that another test will benefit me or others.
How about the hazard perception, which SHOULD be enforced to all cyclist, I took it, and yes, it has done a lot for me, many of theses crimes were acted by people with no respect for other road users, nor people, try riding in brixton, you may find your self in many situations where the Hazard Perception may save your life, many people there are breaking the law by driving without any insurence, tax or without a liecence illegally.
Hazard perception takes training, it has to be said. Its a blimmin brilliant idea and I do think everyone should do it. The police do a good one at speed in the car (there was a video here somewhere) and there were a few dvd games.
I suppose the benefit of cycling is that you tend to be moving a lot slower than motors and hazard perception is easier to take in.
