I want one bad, but didn't know it until I ran across it on youtube while looking into Dingoo and other handheld emulators, but this looks like more fun to me. Plus I get to hack it, which I have a "little" bit of experience in that department. Its cheaper by $200 than the other Android tablets I was looking at to really just use for retro gaming for the most part anyway.

@qbertaddict1 There is a spec that doesn't move with the reflection of the camera. It's directly below the 'a' in 'Ready' when ghouls 'n ghosts begins.
@camel747 There is a portective cover that is over the device and I got dust in it when I tore it apart. There were actually three specs of dust. I removed the cover completely after a day or so. No dead pixels

Thanks for making such a detailed review of this YDPG18. I agree with your comments about the inability to remap buttons under Settings. Unfortunately with these types of emulators from overseas it's kind of a glass is half full / half empty situation. They offer more options than the typical MP4 or Android device, but never really work perfectly. Companies like Yinlips and JXD have to cut corners to keep these cheap, so they never reach their potential. I used to have a Dingoo myself.
@kupigana yeah they occasionally get it right the original dingoo a320 is a wonderful device and the caanoo is awesome as well. I hope the someone gets a custom rom on this device. It has a lot of promise.
@qbertaddict1 you have root on this device don't you? I can help you remap the buttons if you want. Helpfully android does keyboard mappings with a plain text file. This can be edited by hand or with some tools like ButtonRemapper (search for it on the XDA forums)
How long did it take for you to receive yours? I paid 22 dollars for shipping, but I'm hearing some not so good reviews from others who still haven't ordered it. By the way, I ordered from isharegifts. Also, does it install other APK files such as quake 3?
@railguy123 It took about 10 days to get it. People need to realize that this device is only as good as the time you spend on it. If you don't want to tinker around with things and optimize them yourself the opensource handheld and pmp scene isn't for you. I got mine from buyfromtaobao. It has it weaknesses but also provides a lot of fun. To me it is worth it but to others that do not wish to get their hands dirty it is not. To those people I say go get an iphone ;)

@funtasticguy 1. The battery life is not the greatest. I am getting between 4 to 4 1/2 hours on heavy use.
2. The batter would not be hard to replace it is just two wires that need to be soldered and they are big solder points but I don't know what battery is safe to use in terms of voltage and stuff

very thorough review, good job. i have a question, though: how does this fare with SNES games? i'm interested in performance over everything else; on a PSP, for example, games such as DKC or kirby super star perform very poorly, and i'm specifically looking for a replacement to fill the gap.
Awesome, but I wish these open handhelds would stop ripping off the PSP's design and come out with their own, since it just makes them look really cheap by comparison.

Also according to oskarzero, z4root works on the G18. Once rooted I suppose an application like Titanium Backup should be able to remove the default emulators.

@dreamcastII Thanks for the compliment. It does not support rac/av but the hdmi has the option of selecting 480i 720p and 1080p. All of them have the same issue
Wow..is it Mame4all running ? If it runs it must be cool except for 16:9 ratio could be a problem. I see problems with gyruss ,that's a big pity as I love vertical oldies...how can you fire while moving...that's a big pity no vertical games fire buttons as in Caanoo...by the way nice android powered console.

How long did it take for you to receive yours? I paid 22 dollars for shipping, but I'm hearing some not so good reviews from others who still haven't ordered it. By the way, I ordered from isharegifts. Also, does it install other APK files such as quake 3?

@railguy123 It took about 10 days to get it. People need to realize that this device is only as good as the time you spend on it. If you don't want to tinker around with things and optimize them yourself the opensource handheld and pmp scene isn't for you. I got mine from buyfromtaobao. It has it weaknesses but also provides a lot of fun. To me it is worth it but to others that do not wish to get their hands dirty it is not. To those people I say go get an iphone ;)

@funtasticguy 1. The battery life is not the greatest. I am getting between 4 to 4 1/2 hours on heavy use.
2. The batter would not be hard to replace it is just two wires that need to be soldered and they are big solder points but I don't know what battery is safe to use in terms of voltage and stuff

Also you said that no one cares about retro gaming then how do you explain the rise in sales on the PSN and Live market place from retro games? Unfortunately the explanations are all in Spanish, but maybe you can figure it out.
Also according to oskarzero, z4root works on the G18. Once rooted I suppose an application like Titanium Backup should be able to remove the default emulators.

Really good review. Thanks for this. (If you want to make a review video anyone copy qbertaddict1: he doesn't talk all the time but lets the machine sound have a chance too; he sorts out his camera *before* filming and he tests the machine out beforehand to make informed comments .. (none of this 'joy of unboxing' rubbish)).
Does this machine allow normal 3.5 mm jack RAC /AV connectors to an old style TVlike Dingoo and Caanoo - does that lag?

@dreamcastII Thanks for the compliment. It does not support rac/av but the hdmi has the option of selecting 480i 720p and 1080p. All of them have the same issue

Wow..is it Mame4all running ? If it runs it must be cool except for 16:9 ratio could be a problem. I see problems with gyruss ,that's a big pity as I love vertical oldies...how can you fire while moving...that's a big pity no vertical games fire buttons as in Caanoo...by the way nice android powered console.
