Dr. Gwozdz teaches at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS He is an excellent teacher and pedagogue of the Saxophone. If you are a serious saxophone student and would like learn the saxophone in light of the creator's intent, I would recommend studying with him. You will NOT be disappointed.
sounds pretty good but the best i have heard is a guy that is kind of a hermit in new york.....he only plays out sparingly.but what a spiritual experience every time i hear him play....his name is Garth Davis
Hmmmmmmm, He may be good with the added improvs, but his playing is not a patch on the original Rascher version I still have on Vinyl. The man is still the master. Might see if I can work out how to add a photo of the sleeve notes and cover and upload the track on here.
@cabecunas the song isn't that hard. maybe to play it this sexy then it's a little hard. i played this song for my solo for solo and ensemble. then went to state solo and ensemble and got a 1. but i think that judge was on something cause i didn't even do that good. idk
Dr Gwozdz plays with a rare sensitivity to the musical line. He is an extremely rare individual, and a gifted musician, and an excellent teacher on the Saxophone. He keeps the author's intent, that is to say he performs with the ideals of Msr Joseph Antoine Sax. As a student of Sigurd Rascher, he maintains the form and substance of his mentor and friend. He plays with a divine symbiotic gush that flows from the inside outward. It is a blessing to hear such an artist!
Well of course, but the scale itself within the music was a form of improvisation being that it is not in the original piece. All notes must be in or conform to some directional scale one way or the other. BAD ASS!
@XdarkdomainX there's no such thing as a totonic scale. maybe you meant octatonic scale, which would mean a diminished or augmented scale, neither of which is what he played.
I know that embellishments are standard performance practice for the Baroque period, but some of them take a 200 year jump in style. There are moments in the first movement where it sounds like Schubert instead of Eccles. Great tone and technique though.
hey, sorry to bug you, but you happened to mention NYSSMA? What level is this? lol I really need to pick up a solo book, but I'm in search of a solo :)
i have to play this solo for solo ensemble coming up in a few months. i think this gives me a better idea on how to play this song. the only thing that's bugging me is the ab lib!!!!!!!!!!!! other than that he's a extremely great sax player!
Students of the saxophone may want to make note of Dr. Gwozdz's tone on this piece as what I think is an example of the "Rascher" school. I have posted a Rashcer recording on Youtube and have a Rascher LP and this is what he sounded like. Wonderful presentation. Dr. Gwozdz studied with Rascher and Londeix.
I really enjoy listening to this performance. Critically speaking, he has near-perfect intonation (minus some high-end notes such as E's that are a bit sharp). Tone is very rich as dark. My only complaint is that he tends to get very brash and aggressive with some attacks. This sometimes causes him to lose control such as at 2:36 and 5:40 - 5:45. As for the embellishments, I have mixed feelings. Some are very nice, and some are very distracting and inappropriate (4:11 ???).
The embellishments RUINED the song. Since when are the written notes too boring??? I think that the song is beautiful just the way it is written. Also, just a tad bit too much vibrato for my taste...Other than that, great technical work and tone. A little too harsh in the large jumps in Mvt. 2
I understand that. But I am speaking purely from my personal opinion and musical taste. I just happen to think that this song does not need so much embellishment.
Im a freshman tenor sax player in high school and i don't know as much about music like all of you guys but that was an excellent performance. I'm playing this sonata for my solo at the end of the year and I just started working on this piece. Thanks for giving me a sneak peek at what it can hopefully sound like.
props on that second movement though XD

im only in 8th grade and omg the fourth movement is so hard... whenever theres the skipped notes i always squeak. its so annoying
steven4931 2 years ago
i know what you mean, you have to breathe somewhere and then once you breathe its really hard to come back in smoothly so fast
eg2012squared 2 years ago
Wow - I play that on violin, and I must say, it sounds so much better on the sax!!
I have my grade 5 violin tomorrow, and I'm playing the first and second movements in the exam!
I probably should be saying it sounds much better on violin.
It does. Just not when I'm playing it!
