Do you have other things to make or coat the dounut i cant hav cin cuz im allergic and the glazeo dont like or frosting can i coat it with plain sugar or sume thing else
Hello Betty and friends! I just wanted to tell everyone that I tried these donuts and they are SUPER! nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Also the cinnamon finish is just right. My family loved these! I would also like to note that I had used an all- purpose flour that seemed to be very finely milled, and I used approx. 1/2 more flour than was suggested because the dough was a little too sticky at first. But these turned out just wonderful! :) Thanks again
If you don't have a thermometer, how can you tell the oil is hot enough to drop the dough in?I'd like to make these for my daughter's birthday weekend in a few days, have everything but the thermometer....
@badbabe667 When you have heated the oil until it seems pretty hot, put just a bit of the doughnut mix into the oil. If it immediately bubbles and sizzles, the oil is ready. If it just sink, the oil needs to be hotter. (Be sure not to let the oil get hot enough to smoke.)
@MrShrimpy72 Hi Peter! Yes you can make cake-style doughnuts with this recipe. Roll the dough out after it has rested. Cut it into doughnut shapes and continue with the recipe.
@bettyskitchen I just made it! My whole family gobbled them up so fast (and I made 36 of them), I used powdered sugar instead of the cinnamon sugar mix just because I'm not too fond of cinnamon :]
Thank you so much for all your time and recipes! My mom is always amazed at the dishes I make with your recipes!

Hey Betty! I love all your recipes, you are just AMAZING! I had a quick question: I don't have all-purpose flour but I do have self-rising flour. So what should I do?
@bettyskitchen Thanks Betty! I made the dough last night but it was kind of sticky and softer than I expected. I'm not sure what went wrong, any ideas?
I'm definitely wanting to try this, though I have a question. Would these fair well, if they were filled with a pudding, cream or jelly filling or are these strictly for outside flavoring only?
@Dark0Malkavian You could fill them with a small amount of pudding, cream, or jelly, but you would have to make sure the dough totally encloses the filling (which would probably be hard to do). I would make the (larger) ball first, and then make an opening to insert the filling and close the opening after it is filled. It would taste wonderful.
Such a great recipe and so simple! I confess that I 'cheat' by buying a tube of buttermilk biscuits, poking a hole in the center of each with a straw, then deep fry them in oil for instant donuts. ( I got the idea from Paula Deen) But your donut holes look good too!
@orckiller91 Just add chocolate to the mix. You may leave out the cinnamon. Also, roll them in confectioner's sugar or use a glaze (chocolate or vanilla) on them.
Ymmmmm.....luvin' these donut holes alot! Hmm....i notice this dough doesn't take any yeast, so would this dough be the one used in cake donuts? I've just made these! I bought some American cup measures a few weeks ago and I've finally managed to use them :) Mine didn't turn out like yours though. I had to use strong white bread flour instead of all purpose, I didn't have baking soda or peanut oil either so I just added more baking powder and used rapeseed oil instead.
They still turned out great! I am surprised that I managed to make them and they're nearly all gone thanks to my mum who hates cinnamon but loves these, weird right?! lol

@xchamorrobrox That's how I make mine. My niece loves them because they tastes great and they're very quick to do. These doughnut holes look delicious Betty, you are such an inspiration to myself and many others on here. I look forward to buying the ingredients for these and trying them out. Thanks for sharing another straight forward recipe with your friends....Richard ;-)
@imle0is0me Hi! In European supermarkets you can find baking soda under its chemical name: Natron. Baking powder actually contains natron and some acid to help it react when it gets in contact with the liquids of the dough. The baking soda on its own works in this recipe because there is buttermilk in the recipe which contains lactic acid. You'll be perfectly fine with baking powder.
Oh yum! When I was a kid we would use refrigerated biscuits to make donuts similar to this. We would kind of tear a hole in the middle, fry them up and then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar.
Betty, iv been watching you now exactly for one year now, because i remember i started watching you on May bank holiday weekend last year here in Ireland.I try to make one of your recipes every month. This is again another stunner of your recipes.
ill be sure to make these, i'm out the door now to get Buttermilk :)
