while going to that isles/rangers game last month at msg on the train from ronkonkoma to penn we passed by 6 M3's in service, 2 at the hillside facility and 1 more in penn for the port washington branch. so theres at least 9 M3 trains that are still running but im sure theres a good handful more than that
i was lucky enough to ride an M3 last month after the rangers/isles game on the ronkonkoma branch. the 10:46 to ronk. was originally on track 20 which had M7 but they did track change to 21 and i got the m3
the m1's have cab windows that u pull down, while the m3's have cab windows that u slide sideways. thats the one way u can tell the difference by looking
the m1's were numbered 9001-9770 the m3's are numbered 9771-9946 but only the m3's are in service on the lirr
they still run on every branch. exept on the weekends, they try not to use the m3's. on some days they just dump the m3's on the port washington branch. i was very lucky one day back in august to get an m3 and see another one while lookin out the railfan window
cant believe they had M1 cars mixed in with the rest of the M3's on this train. the 3rd and 4th cars were M1's!

I heard that LIRR has kept 36 of the M3s so DO NOT think that all of the M3's are gone but it's sad that we have no more M1's.

Thanks, I can finally notice that! And I believe the M1s have the blue stripes.

I always used to favor the M7s. I still miss the M3s though.
