Hm, which one is more advanced of a solo? Gingersnap or The Pine Cone Forest? I'm currently a junior in high school and am doing solos for each year. I'm wondering if these are some of the most challenging pieces to do in the book.
@vietchinito i would say Gingersnap mostly because of making sure that the feeling of those
dotted eighth note triplet figures that start appearing in the first measure, fifth line is very crucial to make sure you get them the same every time. right before this video was posted, i had the chance to actually play Gingersnap with Pratt, his interpretation will always be different, very very open by comparison to anybody i've ever heard.
Gingersnap has more subtleties to worry about, like the different types of triplet figures, which makes it hard to play and many different ways to interpret it. On the other hand, Drum Corps on Parade is a standard of Pratt solos, being the very first in the infamous 14 modern solos. He said they forced him to put tempo markings at the top of these, and the ones that are marked aren't necessarily the ones to play them at, play wherever they "swing". My vote would go towards Gingersnap though
this is definitely not going to any contest, this was me bored on a saturday afternoon at school wanting to hear how my new drum sounded like on tape before my recital. Pratt just came to my school a couple months before this and he definitely harped on dynamics, especially when only they are only forte and fortissimo
The video response of my vids (which are presently out of sync for some reason)are because I would love to hear them on a Cooperman. Some of my solos are better suited for this type of drum. The kevlar on my cranked to the bone 13 inch Pearl doesn't do the solos justice. Nice sounding drum by the way.
You can barely hear the accents in Gingersnap....play it slower keep it cleaner.

What do you guys think is more advanced of a solo, or more impressive to play if you will?
Gingersnap or Drum Corps. On Parade?
Thanks.

exactly, and you need to make that small change very dramatic, especially if your planning on taking it to contest
