Hi there my name is Steve S. the first time i listioned to Doug Church i had no idea he was actually singing i thought he was lip singing Elvis tunes! but i was covinced that is his own voice! it felt that Elvis was back to life. i also have done Elvis since i was 10 i do his young yrs stuff from 50s to 60s & a little of 70s. having the chance to feel Elvis in our souls is a wonderful experiance specialy for us on stage.

For me it's either P.J. or Elvis. While Doug is good and Orion was too, I like to stick to the original entertainers with the real "X" factor and true charisma. For me it's the Living Legend P.J.Proby who in my opinion has the most versatile vocal range and who is right in line with The Legendary Elvis Presley.

It doesn't matter who sang the song close to how Elvis will do it, the song is beautiful and touching. I respect those great ETA's who have done justice to their trade and as long as they do it in good taste, they must be appreciated for helping the memories of Elvis lives forever.
The most dominant trait in Elvis no impersonator matches totally and thats his eyes; not Johnny harra, Justin shandor, or even Ryan pelton: only the ohio man matches them. Elvis's eyes can only be a match by someone with indian "aboriginal" blood, since that feature was from his mother. But in my opinion, Justin Shandor is the best impersonator in the world, with his voice even closer to elvis than doug church.
I believe the 2 best impersonators ever are Justin Shandor and Johnny harra. Only a couple impersonators have both the near perfect voice as well as the deadringer look and thats these two. Some impersonators either have the sound but not the look and vice versa. Martin fontaine does the best young look, but that look is not real, and he sounds nothing like Elvis.
When you take away all the silly Elvis competitions and small commercials, only Justin Shandor and Johnny harra have been chosen by top magazines and TV to do the most major Elvis Projects. They are also mentioned the most by Graceland and Lisa-Marie Presley herself. When Justin's voice matures into Elvis older voice, nobody will come close to him, but to be fair, doug church right now sounds a little bit more like the older voice, Justin still reigns as the younger voice - hands down.
In a way it's kind of sad that people want to impersonate Elvis. Perhaps people should be themselves, not try to be someone else. Celebrate your own identity, not someone else's. I wonder if Elvis would feel that way? He'd probably be embarrassed by all these copycat singers (although I doubt he would admit it to the public)! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but even so... be yourself, not Elvis!
Can't agree with that comment moogmoo, there is absolutely nothing wrong with tryin to emulate the "greats" when people recognise talent & carisma, such as Elvis had in abundance they want to be like them or have a little ofthat special gift. The difference is: Jimmy Ellis' voice was naturally like Elvis. Doug Church imitates Elvis, Dean Martin, Tom Jones etc. He is an impersonator. Jimmy Ellis was adopted. In case you didn't know, the best Elvis ever isn't even an impersonator. the discovery channel did a 5 minute interview about 10 years ago with a man that is about a 99% deadringer to elvis who lives in ohio. he was paid alot of money to do the interview or he would have done it. Elvis most famous features match him perfectly, his eyes and smile. i don't know his name.

I actually filmed this footage! :D It was in Norway together with Elvis tribute artist Johnny Reel. They actually performed "Just Pretend" as a duet. Although Dougs version of this song is good it does not hold water against Jimmy Ellis (Orion)'s version of it. But it is indeed nice! :) And as Doug told me before the show he was a big fan of Jimmy too and used to study his technique.

Well, anyone is entitled to their own opinion. :) But Jimmy Ellis doesn't deserves to even be compared to the rest of the impersonators. He was a truly gifted singer. He never tried to imitate Elvis. it was just his voice. I don't know if you have heard much of Jimmy or not but I really recommend his cd's. If you are a sucker for ballads (like me) I can recommend the album "Special Moments". :)

For me & many others, Martin FONTAINE from Quebec/CANADA & Doug CHURCH are the 2 best Elvis PRESLEY Impersonators in the World now.

It doesn't matter who sang the song close to how Elvis will do it, the song is beautiful and touching. I respect those great ETA's who have done justice to their trade and as long as they do it in good taste, they must be appreciated for helping the memories of Elvis lives forever.

The most dominant trait in Elvis no impersonator matches totally and thats his eyes; not Johnny harra, Justin shandor, or even Ryan pelton: only the ohio man matches them. Elvis's eyes can only be a match by someone with indian "aboriginal" blood, since that feature was from his mother. But in my opinion, Justin Shandor is the best impersonator in the world, with his voice even closer to elvis than doug church.

I believe the 2 best impersonators ever are Justin Shandor and Johnny harra. Only a couple impersonators have both the near perfect voice as well as the deadringer look and thats these two. Some impersonators either have the sound but not the look and vice versa. Martin fontaine does the best young look, but that look is not real, and he sounds nothing like Elvis.

When you take away all the silly Elvis competitions and small commercials, only Justin Shandor and Johnny harra have been chosen by top magazines and TV to do the most major Elvis Projects. They are also mentioned the most by Graceland and Lisa-Marie Presley herself. When Justin's voice matures into Elvis older voice, nobody will come close to him, but to be fair, doug church right now sounds a little bit more like the older voice, Justin still reigns as the younger voice - hands down.

In a way it's kind of sad that people want to impersonate Elvis. Perhaps people should be themselves, not try to be someone else. Celebrate your own identity, not someone else's. I wonder if Elvis would feel that way? He'd probably be embarrassed by all these copycat singers (although I doubt he would admit it to the public)! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but even so... be yourself, not Elvis!

Can't agree with that comment moogmoo, there is absolutely nothing wrong with tryin to emulate the "greats" when people recognise talent & carisma, such as Elvis had in abundance they want to be like them or have a little ofthat special gift. Elvis will live forever because millions round the world recognise the special gift he had. So yes be yourself, but there is no harm in tryin to be like one of the Greats..

The difference is: Jimmy Ellis' voice was naturally like Elvis. Doug Church imitates Elvis, Dean Martin, Tom Jones etc. He is an impersonator. Jimmy Ellis was adopted. His Dad's name was Vernon and Mom was Gladys. Makes you wonder doesn't it? Rio is the best today. He is just totally incredible! Joe Scibetta

Why is it that these people insist on impersonating Elvis at his worst? Elvis'reputation was made by the Sun years and carried on throughout 1957,1958 and 1959 at RCA...he was the iconic rebel, theguru of real rock n roll...yet all these guys, lets face it, middle aged and overweight men want to do is to climb into a jump suit and remind the world of what he became, an overweight, parody of himself.
If you want to see a proper impersonator then go and see Travis LeDoyte or Eddie Clendenning.

In case you didn't know, the best Elvis ever isn't even an impersonator. the discovery channel did a 5 minute interview about 10 years ago with a man that is about a 99% deadringer to elvis who lives in ohio. he was paid alot of money to do the interview or he would have done it. Elvis most famous features match him perfectly, his eyes and smile. i don't know his name.

There's been so much comment on Doug Church versus Jimmy (Orion) Ellis that I wanted to comment myself. [Prior to recently joining YouTube I had never heard of either]
Doug Church does a fine version of this song but there is no
doubt that much of the style comes from the first person to
do this song - Jimmy Orion Ellis - who appears to have arrived
on the scene long before Doug Church did. From what I've read
Jimmy seems to have started in the 70's and Doug in the 80's.

Part II:
Doug goal is to impersonate Elvis and I think he does a
great job. In reading about Jimmy 'Orion' Ellis it seems
he was pushed into the Elvis thing more buy his handlers and
producers. From his bio he definitely tried to shake the
Elvis thing and do his own thing. The discography for Jimmy
is impressive - he recorded a lot of records/cd - and
it seems his managers/producers tried to do a lot with him.

Part III:
Doug Church has focused on the impersonating side of things
and his site claims he can perform 70 voices to perfection.
He also toured on 'Legends in Concert' so he is definitely
a very good impersonator.
For this particular song the creative interpretation goes
to Jimmy. I could find no evidence in any of the copyright
sights that Jimmy wrote the song - though there were at least
six songs with this exact name.

Last Part IV:
I've listened to both Doug and Jimmy's version of this song
many times and I think Doug does Elvis's voice better but
Jimmy sings the song better.
Jimmy's songs "100 Pounds of Clay", "Solitaire", and his
version of this song also impressed me.
Of course, were he alive, there is no doubt Elvis would have
trumped both Jimmy and Doug on this song.

Anyone on hear of Pete Wilcox? Arguably the best Elvis Impersonator ever. Hes past his prime, but can still do it. Called the Babe Ruth of Elvis impersonators. Many many tv shows, movies, voice of Elvis on Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. First elvis for Legends in Concert. etc..anyone else heard of him??

I actually filmed this footage! :D It was in Norway together with Elvis tribute artist Johnny Reel. They actually performed "Just Pretend" as a duet. Although Dougs version of this song is good it does not hold water against Jimmy Ellis (Orion)'s version of it. But it is indeed nice! :) And as Doug told me before the show he was a big fan of Jimmy too and used to study his technique.

Well, anyone is entitled to their own opinion. :) But Jimmy Ellis doesn't deserves to even be compared to the rest of the impersonators. He was a truly gifted singer. He never tried to imitate Elvis. it was just his voice. I don't know if you have heard much of Jimmy or not but I really recommend his cd's. If you are a sucker for ballads (like me) I can recommend the album "Special Moments". :)

And NOBODY sings like Elvis,there is only ONE,only one king,only one Elvis...Elvis had 3 voices,low high and medium,listen to songs If I Can Dream low voice,Its Now or Never medium voice,and Burning Love high voice,the same singer,but the voice is a bit diffrent,listen and you will hear,and all impersonators can only impersonate the low voice...I dont know if you understand,but there is nobody that can impersonate the high voice...
