@GracieBreakdown I'm new to this whole Jiu jitsu thing and I'm in BJJ myself. but royce gracie has become my favourite Jiu jitsu fighter. I don't really understand the who GJJ and BJJ thing, what's the difference? I understand Royce gracie founded it obviously. but is it just a more advanced type of jiu jitsu? Please respond thank you. - A 13 year old jiu jitsu fan.
@ThePizzleFizzle Hi bro. Royce didn't found Gracie Jiu Jitsu, it was Carlos Gracie and his younger brother Helio Gracie. (Basically Royce's dad and uncle founded it.) When their jiu-jitsu got popular, Helio didn't mind it being called BJJ because it's his gift to Brazil. Still... lots of people prefer to call it GJJ to give honor to the family or their teacher, who came from the same lineage. Most people call it BJJ or just JJ.
they left out the part where Gracie had wraped his gi around kens right arm. That is how he was able to reverse the heel hook. Gracie used his Gi so many times in the early days to gain an advantage. It was like bringing a weapon in the ring.
GRACIE FAMILY THINK THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES IN THE UFC AND THEY ARE NOBODY! YEA THEY STARTED THIS DISCIPLINE BUT THERE ARE LOT OF GOOD CHAMPIONS OUT THERE BESIDES ANY GARCIE MEMBERS. ID LIKE SEEN ROYCE NOW DAYS TO SEE IF HE WOULD HAVE THE COURGAE TO FIGHT ANDERSON SYLVA, BETWEEN ANOTHERS GREAT CHAMPIONS!
@mexiduro Gracie vs Hughe was 13 years after this fight. Shamrock and Gracie were both young men at the time of this fight instead of Gracie had 40 years old at the moment of fight with Hughe
@Efrainalfredo YEA I UNDERSTAND BUT KEN WAS 40 POUNDS HEAVIER AND HUGHE WAS THE SAME WEIGHT LIKE ROYCE! ROYCE WOULDN'T BE CHAPION NOWDAYS! TODAY THE FIGHTERS TRAIN MORE SEROIUSLY! BEFORE EVERYBODY WAS FAT AND THJEY HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THEY WERE!
I always found that front kick at the beginning to be very interesting. I have an old book of Kodokan judo that shows this kick. The only other place I've seen it is in Pencak Silat. I was training with a very elite instructor about 15 years ago and this kind of push-kick and some variations with a ton of follow through was something we worked on. Royce seemed to use it as a feint to set up the takedown, but that kick is classic Kodokan and is no joke.
Awesome channel guys. Could you please breakdown Carlos Newton vs Bob Gilstrap. This was back when triangle chokes were rare in the UFC. Keep up the great work.
How about UFC 10, Severn Vs Abbot. Not an overly exciting match, but there where some wrestling style sub setups all over the place and Dan got nothing.
Hey Guys I know you break down fights from a Gracie point of view but can you breakdown How Ken Shamrock defeated Pat Smith back in UFC1, I've seen that fight like 100 times but can't figure out if he heel hooked him or placed a weird ankle lock(I only seen a slight torque) I know you guys are grappling experts and you study diffrent styles to make Jiu jitsu better, that would be great and highly appreciated on my end, thanks :)
Rener and Ryron are probably two of the greatest Jiu-Jitsu instructors or even just martial arts instructors out there. You can hear the excitement and passion for the art in their voices.
@jomastretch He was shoot fighter and had experience in pankration. I just think if there was a high level wrestler in the first UFC Gracie may not have won....
@Darthloozer possibly. i dont know much about wrestling vs jiu jitsu but i would think bjj is more effective? does wrestling have good submissions like bjj?
They forgot to mention that Royce used his sleeve to chock out Shamrock. UFC 1 was fashioned around Royce Gracie. If there was a wrestler in the first tournament there may have been a different outcome.....
The most technical MMA match I've ever seen(very little striking but mostly high level submission grappling), was the match between Kazushi Sakuraba and Carlos Newton from Pride. I wish Ryron and Rener would discuss that match. It was one of the greatest displays of submission grappling I've ever seen.
¡Imaginen estas peleas entre gigantes de la historia!: Royce Gracie vs. Wally Jay; Ken Shamrock vs. Chuck Norris; Rickson Gracie vs. Masahiko Kimura; Bruce Lee vs. Huo Yuan Jia; Apidej Sit Hrun vs. Gerard Gordeau; Helio Gracie vs. Gene Lebell; Joe Lewis vs. Masutatsu Oyama; Lyoto Maschida vs. Mike Stone; Ku Yu Chueng vs. Ed Parker; Gichin Funakoshi vs. Yip Man.
People, FIGHTING WAS JUST AS DANGEROUS/HARD THEN, AS IT IS NOW.
Yes, most people did not know GJJ, but at the same time, The Gracies were not as good at using it in professional situations, as they are now.
The technical trade-off is about the same because of this.
So while people didn't know much about GJJ. their raw athleticism gave them just as much of a chance, as people have now, due to the depth and polish of the GJJ that the Gracies used in those fights, being limited.
@khalsasikh That's 90 minutes long! Too long for most people to stay interested. Of course, it took Sakuraba 90 minutes to beat him, so despite the win, it still took him 90 minutes to defeat Royce. Quite impressive for both men, but props to Sakuraba for his win. Too bad Pride used him poorly after that. Royce has a network of schools around the world and, looks to be quite healthy.
Many people like to say that it was easy back then, that fighters didn't know as much as they do now, which is true, but this shows that there were so many pit falls that could have been instantly dangerous for Royce, and it was definitely not easy. Respect to Royce.
Please please please break down the Renzo Gracie vs Ben Spijkers fight. I've watched that fight a million times and still cant figure out what choke he used to finish him.
Hello, alot of people said that the ufc 5 superfight rematch was not very interesting, but if you have grappling experience, u noticed some things. I noticed that royce almost choked out shamrock at around 8:00 in with a sleeve choke. Again later about 24 min. He did the same again almost. Id like to see some of that brokedown! peace!
I noticed when I saw this back in '93 that Royce looked like he slapped Ken in the face while Ken was over him, and this seemed to make Ken panic a bit more and sit a bit more quickly. It was as if Ken wanted to quickly get away from the slaps. Then with Royce on top, Ken looked like a fish out of water and Royce seemed to glide from position to position over him like water until the choke was masterly slid on in a pro jiu jitsu style. Great analysis !! One of my favorites
Idk how ppl are calling themselves "Gracie students," then cussing and calling each other out? on here? on YouTube? on their Channel? its ridiculous. Gracie JJ is abt the art of jiu-jitsu and how its used EFFECTIVELY today, not keyboard warfare. keep ur negativity outta the lessons. great video
All these years I kept saying that Royce was so dirty for holding on to the choke for so long after Gerard Gordeau tapped so many times. I had absolutely no idea Gerard bit him so good for his cheating ass!
I know the GJJ lesson was brief (at the very end) and didn't involve a complex scrample or multiple position changes, but a classic GJJ mistake that backfired happened in the "War of 04'" title match between Hughes and St. Pierre (their first fight). That would be a quick and easy but important breakdown.
Interestingly, Ken Shamrock in his book stated, that Royce used his Gi to achieve the mount position from the kneebar attempt by somehow hooking Ken's arm with the gi sleeve and somehow pulling himself up like that.
That was awesome!! I had to buy the UFC video in '94 from a porno video shop, the only place that stocked it, as it was classified "xxxx" because the gov't didn't know what else to classify 'no rules fighting' - it seemed a 'crazy' concept at the time. And when Royce came to Australia, he was so cool; he hung out at Bondi Beach with us and actually broke down the Sakuraba fight with me; move for move!
@spitblueblood I am PRETTY sure they know the technique. All they gotta do is ask their Uncle Royce. :-) Also, it was a rear naked without hooks in. Royce was just off to the side with control of the back.
As a competitor, the ankle lock defense wasnt much of a surprise but informative however.. It clears a lot why Royce held on to that MATA LEAO at the end for so long. Thanks again guys. Huge fan
@GGGeoff YESS!! I wanna know WHY it took Royce SO LONG (16+ mins) just to get a standard Triangle Choke on an unsuspecting Dan Severn when it was there (in my opinion) basically THE WHOLE TIME!! good comment GGGeoff
@pulversilva101 Actually the triangle wasn't there for Royce. Dan was "crawl" forward every time Royce attempted to raise his guard to the shoulder area, thus keeping Royces guard in the waist area of Severn.
When Dan had Royce against the cage their was not more room to and gave Royce the opportunity to clinch the triangle.
@holidayrap ty for ur comment, I appreciate ur reply. but in all respect I recently got "Ultimate Royce Gracie" and am a Blue Belt under Renzo. Royce says in the DVD "I was waiting for the mistake. who would break 1st? he did. he couldn't hit me." I saw CLEAR opportunities for other submissions too BESIDES armbar/RNC/lapel choke. thts all Royce ever won with. hes my IDOL n Im taking NOTHING away from him. I jst have so many questions abt the fight. thnx again Holiday
@pulversilva101 Royce vs Severn? :Look at the fight and tell me where there were opportunities for a RNC Royce was never any where near to getting Severns back. He couldn't get an arm bar either because Dan was on top of him and he tried for the lapel choke several timesthe triangle was all that was there.
Congrats on getting your blue belt under Renzo. But PLEASE don't make the mistake of thinking BJJ is all you need. Strikers back then didn't know much about defense now they do.
@holidayrap no, no.. I think it just came out wrong. I never saw a RNC opportunity. I said I saw OTHER submissions BESIDES that a few times during the bout (omaplata, lapel choke, guillotine etc,) but primarily the triangle. Idk what took Royce so long (15+mins) to cinch it in on a guy that's never ever heard of one. he was in position for awhile b4 finally getting it. maybe Severn was just too damn heavy & applying tons'a pressure? Royce's a very patient fighter
These guys did a good job breaking down this fight. I would like to see them break down ken shamrock vs kimo ufc 8, or frank shamrock vs kevin jackson.
how about breaking down how the gracie family bankrolled the first UFCs and had scouting done on everyone. Shamrock saw him one time at ufc one and had him figured out already. Roid cheaters, god only knows how much royce was using befoe he got caught. Wrestling 4 life and respect to Sakuraba for showing how easy it is. 2k year old wrestling arm locks>anything you can learn today.
Their dad didn't create the UFC - WTF. I can't believe you don't know your UFC history. Research information before you make comments and make yourself look like a moron. The Gracies invented the UFC. They wanted Chuck Norris as a commentator but he thought the event was illegal. (true - look it up).
@fabiovictorio Dan Severn said in his interview that it wasn't in his mindset to hit or head but, so when he was pummeling Gracie it was really only wrestling and smothering, didn't hurt him at all. Today everything is so much different because everyone knows wrestling and ju jitsu both, unlike back then. I love watching those older matches though.
I would like to see a Gracie Breakdown classics of Kazushi Sakuraba vs Marcus "Conan" Silveira from "UFC Japan: Ultimate Japan" THE REMATCH! Not the first fight with the bad call. If not that one, then Pride 10 with Sakuraba vs Renzo Gracie with the "spin around kimura." I have always been interested in knowing exactly how those two fights happened step by step and if you guys can break it down, I would greatly appreciate it!
This is absolutely BRILLIANT! I'm sure Im not the only one to now look at those old fights in with completely different understanding, thank you. Please do ALL the Gracie fights from the first UFC'S - especially KIMO
@snapper842002 You Don't actually think that Dana White "Created" the UFC, do you? He just got his rich friend to buy an already existing company. Read before making stupid statements.
If you're worried about self defence learn a stand up fighting style of your choice, Krav Maga, and wrestling(To teach you how to avoid the ground, or basics of what to do when you're there). If you're in the ring you're going to definitely want to know the basics of bjj or more.
A true stat used to be that 98% of street fights end up on the ground. That is why knowing JJ or the like is very usefull. Once you introduce weapons or multiple attackers all bets are off for anyone and any style except for the style of S&W. If you keep the conversation to 1v1 the above stat is the reason JJ is the best thing to have under your belt.
Bloodpac "But what im saying is when it come to street fight BJJ its not as useful as it is in the ring"
I dont speak for the Gracies but my jujitsu instructor had us train multi attackers and defense against eye gouges etc. Too many keyboard warriors think "streetfighting" is some unstoppable all encompassing epic fighting system. The street is just a location like the beach or park.
how about a WEC fight the cowboy vs .... shit whats his name long hair black guy wouldnt tap... fuck one of those fights anyway the ufc isnt the only good fights to break down how about some grapplers quest matches.
Hmm i wonder why there is NO BREAKDOWN ON,Royce Gracie lost to(KazushiSakuraba,Matt Hughes).Renzo Gracie lost to(KazushiSakuraba,MattHughes).Crosley Gracie lost to (Melvin Manhoef,AkihirGono).Ryan lost to (Tokimitsu Ishizawa, Kazushi Sakuraba).Ralph Gracie lost to (Takanori Gomi)From what i understand all those fighters who defeated all the GRACIES above ARE NOT TRAIN BY ANY GRACIE FAMILY MEMBERS.Im just curious without the skills of gracies BJJ how did they manage to win all the gracies?
I'm glad you mentioned Jardine biting Gracie. Lots of keyboard warriors now say UFC is just a sport and fighters couldnt deal with street techniques. They ignore the early UFCs. The only 2 rules were no biting/eye gouging. But since there was no disqualification fighters could literally do anything to win the fight. Yet the basic submissions that worked for Royce still remain strong today. "Unstoppable street" moves never were a decisive factor.
@nexusutube Its more than only 2 rules other than biting/eye gouging my friend.Did u see 2 or more people walk into the ring to help Ken to beat up Royce or Ken took out a sword, stick, baton to hit Royce?u will never see that its because all the Gracie's BJJ is being used in a ring,so long as when u are fighting in a ring there are rules to comply. When you are fighting in a street fight the moment u are one the ground u are as good as dead.Street gangs will not wait for the first guy to tap.
@BloodPacks No shit weapons or multiple attacks are dangerous to grapplers. But guess what they're dangerous to strikers too. I love how people always assume only grapplers would face weapons or multi attackers. What about 4 grapplers attacking one striker. I've seen plenty of street fights that didn't include weapons and were 1 vs 1. And a grappler taking someone down thats inexperienced in ground fighting wont be pulling them down into guard they will be slamming them face 1st into concrete
@nexusutube Did i say anything abt Grapplers are not dangerous to strikers?Im sure its importan to know how to fight on the ground i dont deny that. But what im saying is when it come to street fight BJJ its not as useful as it is in the ring. When u talk abt self-Defence in the streets what ppl fear most is when they are walking alone and being pick up,stop being stupid saying stuff like walking around with 4 grapplers.
@BloodPacks "what ppl fear most is when they are walking alone and being pick up,stop being stupid saying stuff like walking around with 4 grapplers"
Your the one that brought up multi attackers. Do you realize lots of people wrestled in HS and hang out with those teammates. So 4 grapplers jumping someone isnt absurd. Another thing every bar or streetfight Ive seen out of dozens except for 3 went to the ground.
@nexusutube Like you have just said "most of the fights u have seen on the streets are 1v1,its not like all the fights in the streets remain that way.Im not trying to argue abt striking is better or grappling is better pls get the facts right b4 you talk crap.If gracie combatives are real than ask the gracie's to do a multi attacker breakdown im sure it will look stupid.
On Ultimate Grace Kid Peligro said Royce caught Ken with a collar choke using the sleeves!? Not RNC..I actually thought it was a Ezekiel he got caught with....
Royce did this , royce did that. blabla bla.. he was lucky that all.

All these years I kept saying that Royce was so dirty for holding on to the choke for so long after Gerard Gordeau tapped so many times. I had absolutely no idea Gerard bit him so good for his cheating ass!

Amazing guys. Who knew all that was happening in so short a fight.

@beatthedealer
Most people who do BJJ would have known. It was all pretty fundamental stuff that you see almost every class.
BigolePappy2 8 months ago
I know the GJJ lesson was brief (at the very end) and didn't involve a complex scrample or multiple position changes, but a classic GJJ mistake that backfired happened in the "War of 04'" title match between Hughes and St. Pierre (their first fight). That would be a quick and easy but important breakdown.
SAINThoodSEEKER 8 months ago
Interestingly, Ken Shamrock in his book stated, that Royce used his Gi to achieve the mount position from the kneebar attempt by somehow hooking Ken's arm with the gi sleeve and somehow pulling himself up like that.

Abe9096 9 months ago
That was awesome!! I had to buy the UFC video in '94 from a porno video shop, the only place that stocked it, as it was classified "xxxx" because the gov't didn't know what else to classify 'no rules fighting' - it seemed a 'crazy' concept at the time. And when Royce came to Australia, he was so cool; he hung out at Bondi Beach with us and actually broke down the Sakuraba fight with me; move for move!

this proves that bjj is the best martial art in the world
falafel62 9 months ago
I believe it was a gi-choke not a rear naked.
spitblueblood 10 months ago
@spitblueblood Correct.
marcusbondi 9 months ago
@spitblueblood I am PRETTY sure they know the technique. All they gotta do is ask their Uncle Royce. :-) Also, it was a rear naked without hooks in. Royce was just off to the side with control of the back.
GJJFan 9 months ago
@spitblueblood He didn't use the gi to choke him. For reference, Royce used the gi to choke Minoki Ichihara at ufc 2.

As a competitor, the ankle lock defense wasnt much of a surprise but informative however.. It clears a lot why Royce held on to that MATA LEAO at the end for so long. Thanks again guys. Huge fan

Excellent analysis! Thanks for posting. How's about Royce vs. Dan Severn?
GGGeoff 10 months ago 20
@GGGeoff YESS!! I wanna know WHY it took Royce SO LONG (16+ mins) just to get a standard Triangle Choke on an unsuspecting Dan Severn when it was there (in my opinion) basically THE WHOLE TIME!! good comment GGGeoff
pulversilva101 8 months ago
@pulversilva101 Actually the triangle wasn't there for Royce. Dan was "crawl" forward every time Royce attempted to raise his guard to the shoulder area, thus keeping Royces guard in the waist area of Severn.
When Dan had Royce against the cage their was not more room to and gave Royce the opportunity to clinch the triangle.
holidayrap 8 months ago
@holidayrap ty for ur comment, I appreciate ur reply. but in all respect I recently got "Ultimate Royce Gracie" and am a Blue Belt under Renzo. Royce says in the DVD "I was waiting for the mistake. who would break 1st? he did. he couldn't hit me." I saw CLEAR opportunities for other submissions too BESIDES armbar/RNC/lapel choke. thts all Royce ever won with. hes my IDOL n Im taking NOTHING away from him. I jst have so many questions abt the fight. thnx again Holiday
pulversilva101 7 months ago
@pulversilva101 Royce vs Severn? :Look at the fight and tell me where there were opportunities for a RNC Royce was never any where near to getting Severns back. He couldn't get an arm bar either because Dan was on top of him and he tried for the lapel choke several timesthe triangle was all that was there.
Congrats on getting your blue belt under Renzo. But PLEASE don't make the mistake of thinking BJJ is all you need. Strikers back then didn't know much about defense now they do.
holidayrap 7 months ago
@holidayrap no, no.. I think it just came out wrong. I never saw a RNC opportunity. I said I saw OTHER submissions BESIDES that a few times during the bout (omaplata, lapel choke, guillotine etc,) but primarily the triangle. Idk what took Royce so long (15+mins) to cinch it in on a guy that's never ever heard of one. he was in position for awhile b4 finally getting it. maybe Severn was just too damn heavy & applying tons'a pressure? Royce's a very patient fighter

how about breaking down how the gracie family bankrolled the first UFCs and had scouting done on everyone.

Do Dan Severn vs Royce Gracie. That´s a very interesting match.
fabiovictorio 11 months ago
@fabiovictorio Dan Severn said in his interview that it wasn't in his mindset to hit or head but, so when he was pummeling Gracie it was really only wrestling and smothering, didn't hurt him at all. Today everything is so much different because everyone knows wrestling and ju jitsu both, unlike back then. I love watching those older matches though.

I would like to see a Gracie Breakdown classics of Kazushi Sakuraba vs Marcus "Conan" Silveira from "UFC Japan: Ultimate Japan" THE REMATCH! Not the first fight with the bad call. If not that one, then Pride 10 with Sakuraba vs Renzo Gracie with the "spin around kimura." Gracie Brothers,
Thanks a bunch for your videos.
I find them articulate and informative without any obvious bias towards either fighter in the fights you analyze.
RyanForDogs 11 months ago
1) Jeet Kune Do for stand up, with footwork and shuffling knowledge.
2) Muay Thai for clinch, knees, elbows till stage 1 ground.
3) BJJ for shoots, takedowns, and ground defense.
Not to be studied necessarily in that order.

If you're worried about self defence learn a stand up fighting style of your choice, Krav Maga, and wrestling(To teach you how to avoid the ground, or basics of what to do when you're there). If you're in the ring you're going to definitely want to know the basics of bjj or more.
Tehmedic101 11 months ago
A true stat used to be that 98% of street fights end up on the ground. That is why knowing JJ or the like is very usefull. Once you introduce weapons or multiple attackers all bets are off for anyone and any style except for the style of S&W. If you keep the conversation to 1v1 the above stat is the reason JJ is the best thing to have under your belt.
Vogelsong1 11 months ago
Bloodpac "But what im saying is when it come to street fight BJJ its not as useful as it is in the ring"
I dont speak for the Gracies but my jujitsu instructor had us train multi attackers and defense against eye gouges etc. Too many keyboard warriors think "streetfighting" is some unstoppable all encompassing epic fighting system. The street is just a location like the beach or park.
nexusutube 1 year ago
how about a WEC fight the cowboy vs .... shit whats his name long hair black guy wouldnt tap... fuck one of those fights anyway the ufc isnt the only good fights to break down how about some grapplers quest matches.
cadillacboi420 1 year ago
BloodPacks 1 year ago
I'm glad you mentioned Jardine biting Gracie. Lots of keyboard warriors now say UFC is just a sport and fighters couldnt deal with street techniques. They ignore the early UFCs. The only 2 rules were no biting/eye gouging. But since there was no disqualification fighters could literally do anything to win the fight. Yet the basic submissions that worked for Royce still remain strong today. "Unstoppable street" moves never were a decisive factor.
nexusutube 1 year ago
@nexusutube Its more than only 2 rules other than biting/eye gouging my friend.Did u see 2 or more people walk into the ring to help Ken to beat up Royce or Ken took out a sword, stick, baton to hit Royce?u will never see that its because all the Gracie's BJJ is being used in a ring,so long as when u are fighting in a ring there are rules to comply. When you are fighting in a street fight the moment u are one the ground u are as good as dead.Street gangs will not wait for the first guy to tap.
BloodPacks 1 year ago
@BloodPacks No shit weapons or multiple attacks are dangerous to grapplers. But guess what they're dangerous to strikers too. I love how people always assume only grapplers would face weapons or multi attackers. What about 4 grapplers attacking one striker. I've seen plenty of street fights that didn't include weapons and were 1 vs 1. And a grappler taking someone down thats inexperienced in ground fighting wont be pulling them down into guard they will be slamming them face 1st into concrete
nexusutube 1 year ago
@nexusutube Did i say anything abt Grapplers are not dangerous to strikers?Im sure its importan to know how to fight on the ground i dont deny that. But what im saying is when it come to street fight BJJ its not as useful as it is in the ring. When u talk abt self-Defence in the streets what ppl fear most is when they are walking alone and being pick up,stop being stupid saying stuff like walking around with 4 grapplers.
BloodPacks 1 year ago
@BloodPacks "what ppl fear most is when they are walking alone and being pick up,stop being stupid saying stuff like walking around with 4 grapplers"
Your the one that brought up multi attackers. Do you realize lots of people wrestled in HS and hang out with those teammates. So 4 grapplers jumping someone isnt absurd. Another thing every bar or streetfight Ive seen out of dozens except for 3 went to the ground.
nexusutube 1 year ago
@nexusutube Like you have just said "most of the fights u have seen on the streets are 1v1,its not like all the fights in the streets remain that way.Im not trying to argue abt striking is better or grappling is better pls get the facts right b4 you talk crap.If gracie combatives are real than ask the gracie's to do a multi attacker breakdown im sure it will look stupid.
