Amazing piloting skills, there is no instrument landing system at this airport so its all manual/visual. What this video doesn't show is that the initial approach into the valley is from the opposite direction, overflying the strip (whilst heading straight into the mountain side) and then making 180º degree turn for the final approach..
@1963johndaly Yes true. On our flight in it was total zero visibility on the descent into the valley. Could barely see the wingtip. When we suddenly we broke through cloud we were below the tops of the ridgeline and I saw the side of a mountain with big fir trees that only looked a couple of hundred metres away. Then we did a 180 degree turn in the valley below the height of the ridges. I was seriously paying attention for the whole landing, it was amazing.
@vinitmehta Thanks mate, and to all the others who have posted nice comments!
I don't know a great deal about how they fly the approaches. I read somewhere that it takes 6 months to train a pilot to do it, and that the flight software had to be modified by Airbus to allow the A319s to do it.
I can't verify any of that however, just what I read on the 'net'. Cheers.

Hand flown to perfection... only the most talented Pilots could land here! They must have to be specially trained as well!

I take it this airport can't handle anything bigger than an A319/ A320 size jet.

@pikapoketpu Yeah I'm not sure. On our landing when it did a 180 at the end of the runway we were right at the end!

Friggin awesome..Do they use RNAV at all for the approaches such as flying waypoints in to the valley?
motokid032 6 months ago
@motokid032 As far as I know no - it's visual navigation only.
