Because while some people can luckily come out alright in a bad situations, others don't. :o Not putting down the religion, just answering why. ^^;)

Something similar happened like that with my brother, except he was a passenger and the guy up front apparently was DUI and hit something in deep snow.
The same details about your father were about the same as my brothers, minus the broken back, but he passed away due to our bad hospital in this town T_T.
But enough rant, I'm glad your dads getting better and I hope your mom or anyone finds a job to help support whats going on. Best of luck to you!
