@daveconno The BBC later got ticked off for ''vapourising' the losers in Brainstorm with Kenny Everett. They had to change the camera angle so that you could see them behind the smoke.

I see the trick to the vortex. Since one crucial step forward with a 50/50 chance of failure is inevitable, you have to control when that comes by determining not where the vortex will go, but where it's been. Psyche the vortex player out with two move diagonally to one side; he will almost certainly copy you, since it looks like you're boxing yourself in. But now you know where your fourth move should be to, since he has to move off it for his third, making it safe. After that, it's a cinch.
