@SensaeBushcraft its because it has been cut, or broke in this case the limb is missing if you look you can see where it was..,the sap forms over the cut and continues to swell, this then grows as a deformity,as solid wood, birch in my opinion makes the best burls...hope this helps..thanks
Beutiful work. The Antler handle idea is just amaizing. I wish I had one to put on my burl bowl, or kuksa how they call it in Skandinavia. WTG man 5/5
Thank you for this! It NEVER occured to me to use a small handsaw to cut a burl off a tree! Duh! I am going to do this! So you drilled the holes in the inside to give you an easier way to carve the center out? I have to learn about your pine glue now. I have lots of antlers here! Yippee. Thank you SOOOO much!
At first I misread the name of the video, and I thought it said "Ash bow"...so when I saw you sawing the knob off that tree I was like "Um....how is that going to make a bow?"
thanks for the 4 stars m8,people like you i need around ,just to entertain me...i would like to see you produce a bowl, and can i ask in what way do you see it getting in the way when eating,or would you beng so clever hold the bowl and not the handle????
I`d created a typical sami birch "kuksa" several years ago during a trip in nothern finnland ...cost me a lot of sweat, blood ... and patience :O) ... so - respect!
hey there grimbo, I was kinda wondering if you could message me and maybe explain to me how I can use my pitch for crafts. I know what to use it for, its just that every time I heat it up it catches fire and it hardens almost immediately. With no time to utilize.
as mentoned i drilled small holes for depth gauges, but the carving was done with my leuku knife, and my crook knife, ive featured these in other videos, hope this helps....grimbo
Very nice video and very nice bowl. I've heard of these bowls before and really do want to make one for myself. Pretty straight forward process - if time consuming - but I had one question. At 3:02 I noticed some neatly spaced holes in the bowl. Did you drill those and if so why? Thanks again for the great video.
i drilled small holes as gauges or markers, this is so i dont carve too deep, once ive carved out the holes i have the depth i need....hope this helps...grimbo..
how did you crave it out?
