Hey, nocaro....another great post, and didn't know the story about Smokey and producing Mary. I went to school a couple of miles from the Hitsville studio.
Mary Wells leaving MTOWN had nothing to do with Diana Ross, Mary was at the top of her career when she made that decision,MTown was treating her like royalty. AS for as dating go, I'm not trying to be mean, I love MOTOWN and all the talent there but, If those Motown walls, buses and hotels could talk wouldn't we all be shocked..Every one gives Diana Ross such a bad REPUTATION!! But it doesn't matter if you're the CEO, singer, songwriter or the drummer a married man is a married man!
She was definitely the Queen of Motown she could sing and Diana can entertain you and dated Berry Gordy so there you have it .. the queen of Motown. Motown ripped everybody off back then.
@Tsquaresgirl0514 Mary was the first female star. But, she saw Motown as too limited, and she wanted a bigger company. Not realizing what Motown would become, she got her wish and left the company for another contract. She did not have a very successful post-Motown career. She did not believe Berry and Smokey, and she did not stay for the best times.
For some reason, when this song starts I visualize a customized 1950 Mercury with a Mexican guy with his hair slicked back sitting so low in the driver's seat he's barely able to see over the steering wheel.
@ladyvee7110 In actual fact, Ms. Wells acknowledged during her life that she became convinced that Motown was not a good enough or big enough organization to showcase her talent. So, she dumped the company to go onto bigger and better things. Sadly for her, it did not work as she had planned. It had nothing to do with "what it took" or any other innuendo-laden reference. She would have been wiser to have stayed with the company.
@kenhamlett1 Yeah, Motown was ripping her off but she wasn't the only one. I'm wondering how Diana Ross became anointed the "Queen of Motown" when she was in a group. Added perks come with certain things. Just sayin'. But thanks for the info. I saw the TV One Unsung special also. :)
Nothing takes me away from those days...thanks for trying to ask me for a sign in name and some time love ya to give me some more time to speak now that it has been for nearly 100 years
@sheddski "smokey really was motown most if not all hits for the 60s were written and directed by him while he had his own career"
Smokey was a fabulous writer producer but he was simply one of the many that wrote and produced for Motown artists. Holland, Dozier, and Holland were pretty popular on as many hits in the early 60s it seemed as smokey. By the mid and latter 60s it gave way to others including Ashford & Simpson, Freddie Perren, Johnny Bristol, Harvey Fuqua.
Being a young white man in 1962, I only loved the song without regard to the color of the singer. I hear this tune as a reggae tune, but maybe played a bit too fast. Mary Wells was a VERY big part of why I became a musician. In the latter part of the 60's I worked with many famous Motown musicians but sadly never had the opportunity to thank Mary in person.
Now, in april 2011, I'm old school, but I won't apologize. When we played music, we played in time, and without drum machines.
This NOT gangster ya homie penguin-pants ghay-boy. No, see this here is music. You duck-waddle boys listen to rap, which is NOT music... it's rap... there is NO music about rap... that's why rap SUCKS BUTT...!
This here is Motown... clean and simple Motown. And Mary Wells had it going on and so please don't spoil our Oldies with your rediculous gang puss talk... OKAY HOMIE!
You know, this has ZERO to do with ANYTHING "Gangsta", it is truely comical to see people post comments like that, and it degrades the times of the music, and the music its self. The times,..... true drag racing ( not imported B/S ) , men who fought with fists and not an extention of it like the product of today, dancing, and working hard threw the week to take your girl to a nice place that weekend. Gangster, give me a break.
@TrujilloRuben With all due respect to you and your personal opinion. I've always thought that this was just a great love song, co-written by Smokey Robinson, recorded by Mary Wells, out of Hitsville USA, in Detroit, back in 1962, when the Cha Cha was all the rage. I don't think it has much to do with gangsta music. It ain't like that!
@BuffaloBillius For sure, i cant see anything t ganngsta, in this great song. But Rap and Hip Hop Artists are famous for stealing , great melodic rifts, for their back grounds...... However Buffallo can u tell me if catchy base intro in this great MW/ Motown song is the base Of James Jamerson, thye famous Bass Man for Motown?
@jjs499 Yes,James Jamerson played upright bass on this song. He was the true prince of bass players and his style gave Motown a signature rhythmic pulse that can only be copied but never duplicated. Legend has it that he couldn't read sheet music and all it took was to tell him what was needed and he did it. This song is one of my all-time favorites; it's just awesome and the louder the better!
@BuffaloBillius Thanks Bufallo, As far as politics go, Used to be a regestered Republican. But when I saw what happened with Lehman[ lost 1/3 of retirment savings] and the corrupt Polliticians in General[ all, both Dems an R's] I m now non partisan, None of the Ceo's were even prosecuted except for Mozillo , ceo of Countrywide.and as you miight suspect he sold all or most of its stock between 2006 an late 2007. THe he lawyered up and got mabey a 8 mill slap on the face, but cashed in 25 mill.
@BuffaloBillius when he sold his stock. This country is so corupt, Big corprtions, WALL STREET CRIMINALS pay off the politicians as to have no regulations on the the way they operate. I really dont believe in Progressivism either. But we were was in such bad shape when Obama took over with all the unsecured debt, from the Subprime debacle, noone, can fix it. Your a smart guy, u know it will take yrs to get housing back. And The europeans are just as greedy as the crooks here, Esp in Greece.
@BuffaloBillius I feel bad for your Grandchildren and the youth of today. The corrupt CEOS dont jst want to be rich , but want their future generations to be millionaires. SOOOOO FU***N greedy! I really dont know what the answer is. Our so called democracy has been broken for a long time... it might be too late. I have to come here to listen to this great music so get a break from all the Bad news. Thanks again my friend
@jjs499 Yep, I like to relax to this music too. Ain't nothing quite like it, ya know? The Beatles weren't even knocking on our door yet and Motown was already rocking us and knocking us out! Politics in this country has become very nasty lately and I never thought I'd see the day. If they could all just stop the crap and start working together, we might could get it together as a nation again. And I totally agree that great music is better than all the bad news lately. Keep on keepin' on.
@BuffaloBillius Yeh man , our Music in the 60's,Motown, THe Philly sound, Intruders, Delphonics, Eddie Hollman, Stylistics. Plus Jerry Butler, and Curtiss Mayfield, out of Chicago .....man ,soo muc great R&B music plus Little Anthony and the Imperials, From Brllklin New York, Then The Beatles with The British invasion. THere was so much to choose from. Sometimes i just want to Play golf and listen to our Music to get a break from all the madness. Peace to you....
Motown music from that era had that latin beat. These hits were really big among the Latino and especially the Latina crowd in California in those days. I'm a white guy and I had a Mexican girlfriend when that song was playing.
she has a few other songs on youtube, where she is wearing a gold shiny dress (you beat me to the punch), and I do recall seeing her do the one who really loves you, but someone must have taken it down....thanks

It was genius and succeeded brilliantly.
