I don't think it's JNT's fault, more of changing times. increasingly thru the 80s other British dramas were starting to look slicker, and Who just couldn't catch up without a good rest.
Also, with michael grade cutting budgets for the show as he hated it, then shifting it to ridiculous times (against Corrie, which do you think would win in ratings? Who was clobbered by Corrie).
At least JNT liked the show and wanted a bigger budget.
very true, John Nathan Turner Doesn't get enough credit, for his work if you look at the McCoy era now it is one of the best, he restored Doctor Who to it's original premise during those years if they moved the schedule the rating would have gone up The only problem was Colin Bakers era, although it isn't Colins fault I believe it was Eric Sawards script editing position that was to blame......
......no offense to him because he could write really well for the show it was just that he didn't have the right mind state for script editing (Colin Baker could have been a good Doctor and the audios proved it ) it was the direction Colin was given as to how can he exactly play the Doctor this set up the show for it's downfall thanks to michael grades hatered of the show which lead him to want to make it compete with ITV's coronation Street .
The Tom Baker years up until Leela left, were a phenomena. The Romana years were mostly good too.
I remember as a kid being confused about Doctor Who in the 80s. How could a show that I used to love so much not make me care anymore? Now I can see the things that went wrong. The question is; why did it stay wrong?
just watched the special features on the logopolis DVD. wtf was the production team doing putting question marks on tom? why would the doctor have question marks on himself? so lame. the peak of that lameness culmintaed in colin bakers coat tho. somebody in a very powerful position had incredibly bad taste... JNT anyone :p ? i remember when i first saw that coat i instantly hated it and subconsciously since hated colin baker era haha! i dont want to blame JNT but who else can we blame?
i feel quite bad guys lol. some of these people, like RTD, spend their entire lives trying to perfect a show whilst we just slate it hahahaha. they are probably trying their hardest to make a show that appeals to everyone ( even us ). they tried their best and, to be fair, it must be incredibly difficult to build such an incredible show, like it was during the 70s for example :p, and things like that probably dont come along too often. take my hat off to that *takes his hat off*.
its good that we have all the dvds to watch and its a shame we have already seen them all haha. but one day sussanne i will come back :> until then there is to be no regrets, no fear no disbeliefs :>...blah blah... and prove to me that i am not mistaken in mind!:>:>:>:>! omg im far to drunk to be posting on youtube oops.
im sort of happy hes leaving because he never really could be bothered to do it and his character thought crying would solve everything. his character used the sonic screwdriver to do everything. it's like doctor who and the sonic screwdriver solves everything for the doctor
Peter, Colin and McCoy were all good doctors imo (Although i was never fond of Peter - rather bland!!)
Peter was very popular and many remember him being the Doctor. Sylvester wasn't popular but the show was as people knew that it was still around and avoided it (as I mentioned earlier, "oh, no, it's not still going it is?")
Colin Baker was remembered for both of these. His first series was as popular as Davison's era, but his second series was popular for McCoy's reasons.
no more people buy classic merchandise and more people say the classic is better therefore more people would rather watch that to the new because there have only been two good new doctor who storys, the stolen earth story and the silence in the library story.
the only bad classic story was the lesuire hive coz notin much happened in that but still better than any new storie
for similar reasons I hated David Tennant. To me, he seemed like he was purposefully acting like both Tom Baker and Peter Davison (the manic-ness of Tom baker and the youthfulness of Peter Davison), instead of just being himself.
good point. you have hit the nail on the head with that. tennant was still pretty good tho i thought altho he did look like he was playing a part. the great thing about dr who is that u can get shit actors come and do a really good job. when i think about pertwee era its pretty funny actually how he acted in it ( not that im saying he was a bad actor ) but the point is.. it didnt matter so much. having said that... i thought eccleston looked pretty bad and was noticeable.personality ftw!
No, actually. The original was more famous. It just seems less famous because it is the new series currently broadcasting. If you were in 1968 or 1978, you'd have realised that the nclassic series was more famous than the new series.
Although, in 1988, Doctor Who was very famous but with the general public it was the situation of "oh it's not still going is it?"
actually, he was shit because he was told to portray the Doctor in a certain way: Nasty at first but his personality peels away like skins peel from onions, revealing a kinder Doctor later on. He was told how to play the Doctor rather than the producer allowing the actor to decide how he wants to play the Doctor.
i wopuldnt say classic who wasnt famous. lots of classic dvds are sold in all good dvd shops. and i have seen more people by old merchandise than they have new. so i think it new who what aint that famous
...just to check, did you ever watch that New Who ep called Love and Monsters? cos that would make me strongly disagree that 'all dr who is good in some way' (hell, the old school die-hard fans would admit that the series is not perfect)
...am i the only one who sees the sheer illogic of that statement? just because something has 'Doctor Who' on it doesn't mean that an individual should forget about objective criticism, based on the rationality that he is a 'fan' and therefore MUST like it.
cool.

Why did it go on being bad for so long?
As for the new one - nup.

Colin Baker was great, he was the Doctor at his most misanthropic, you only say that because you don't like the costume.
UltraTien 3 years ago
actualy i think his doctor was a bit to violent coz he was the only one who eneded up strangling his companion
