You play this very difficult Nocturne beautifully! I'm learning this piece also, but I still have a long way to go to play it well. Thank you for sharing.
Grace notes, broken chords start ON the beat in Chopin. We know this for sure, especially in this piece. The hardest thing in this nocturne is a full legato in the arpeggiated section. The double-octaves section (unusual for Chopin) is not hard if one can do doubl octaves. Your agitato reprise should be MUCH more agitated - always pressing on in fits and starts.
@throwscats I don't think this piece is about deep depression. The right hand is "singing" and in that I hear passion and pensiveness. Played too slow, this song is a bust. It has an energy to it. It's...maybe...searching.
I realize you had trouble playing this from a technical standpoint--and that makes sense. This is a difficult piece.
I will say that I didn't think you crescendoed enough into the quiet major chords--as in, the minor part needs to (little by little, then near the end I think with a lot of force) get loud. It's about devastation, right? That's what the piece is to me.
Speaking of getting louder--WAY to loud too fast during the octaves.
You're definitely right when you say the toughest part about Chopin isn't the notes--making it actually sound musical and emotional is the real challenge, and in my opinion the most fun part, since that's where you can really interpret the piece and make it your own. Good job. :-)
Also, congrats on being included in Thru You. Awesome stuff, that is.
Tips eh? Well for the build up part with the octaves, just practice the sections on their own, and make sure you aren't stiff.
During the hardest part after the octaves, just practice each hand separate slowly, without pedal, then practice them together slowly without pedal, then slowly speed up. Make sure that you don't increase your tempo until you can play it with all the melody notes clearly audible
also, because playing 3 over 4, like in the last section, is extremely difficult, I would recommend metronome practice just with rhythms. Once you learn the notes, the piece isn't that difficult - it fits the hands quite nicely.
yes unfortunately. I hadn't anticipated many views when I recorded it so I didn't bother to tune it. Stick around for a couple of new vids on a tuned piano in a couple weeks.
Nice work. I am learning this one. I love Idil Biret's performance of this which is so very deep. I prefer slower versions where the melody is clear and the left hand is perfectly controlled. I have heard too many performances where the left hands ruins everything, especially near the end.
right on. the first time i heard this it was rubinstein's recording, and I decided it was my favorite nocturne, only to be disappointed by other recordings. yours here i really appreciate. it has the same kind of emotion I got with that first recording i heard.
Thank you for bringing out the deceptive cadence at the end of the melody's return! That's the most amazing part for me.

Do it little by little and it'll pack a lot more punch. The doppio needs more rise and fall--like waves. Really... sad waves?
For me, this piece is just about deep, deep depression--which I didn't really catch from the way you played it.
Rubenstein is good, but I almost dislike his interpretation of this one. Look up someone named "Ivan Moravec". I love his version.
I'm not trying to pick you apart, I'm trying to help. Hope it did. Excellent job for even getting through it.

wow, you're really talented. I actually liked that you didn't play it as gravely as it is sometimes played but add some lightness (in some parts).
Nice work.
