Merchant's voice is spot on, I think, but Gervais is disappointing. I probably wouldn't have even guessed whom he was playing had I not known. Voice needs to be higher and more squawky, and Gervais has so many mannerisms to send up, but Culshaw misses the opportunity.
Dead Ringers and the other show John Culshaw does with Debra Stevenson are very poor indeed. I'm not sure why though. I just really dont find them funny at all. Is it just me???

Ricky Gervais takes the piss out of himself yes, but not to the degree deadringers has. I find it rather worrying that you let them mock essentially your Queen and Country, but when it comes to a rather typecast comedian suddenly they've gone too far.

Why should you respect a woman who has been at the forefront of politics in your country for the last 57 years? a woman who helped the troops during WWII? a woman who has been forced to watch the once great British Empire collapse and dissolve into nothing? good point. I admire Ricky Gervais but I don't think he is quite up to the level of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Whether you had the opportunity to vote upon her as leader or not I still think you should have pride in your country at least.

Getbently- in reverse order. 1) Pride in my country and respect for its unelected despot are not the same thing. 2) Again, I have more admiration for Gervais than the Windsor lady, but this I suppose is subjective. 3) Good riddance to the British Empire. Of the people of the world, its existence or lack thereof has greater impact on the lives of, say, Indians, than it does your Queen. Again, the 'queen' and England are not the same thing, and I can have pride in one and contempt for the other quite easily. I agree with you than monarchy's place is as part of our history, and not our present nor future.
I can't remember the last time I heard the song you refer to, but 'The' is the only word with any significance for me. I don't believe in the god invoked to justify the divine rule of heredity, nor do I think one can be 'saved' in the way it implies.
