@KaOssis There are no chemicals involved in "making snow" from a snow machine. Dry powdery snow is literally dry snow, that does not mean that it's somehow chemically changed, it just means it's particularly cold and windy. Cars are often times wrong and shouldn't be relied upon for exact readings, there is much more sophisticated temperature sensing technology involved with readings from air ports, which is where most news channels will get their information from.
i'm assuming you are in the UK? right? well the BP oil spill and the corexit killer chemicals stopped cold the golf stream which keeps your parts quite warm in the winter. We are in for one hellish cold winter here, and same for you folks in the mid/east US.

It was the Gulf Current which stalled *in the Gulf of Mexico*
not the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf Stream)
which is energised by cold arctic water subducting near Newfoundland.
The Jet Stream has shifted south, which is allowing more surface heat to radiate into space, also allowing cold arctic air to swirl southwards.
